Martin Scorsese says Marvel movies are 'not cinema'
Tikisoo replied to Sukhov's topic in General Discussions
So many misunderstand Warhol's message/statement about art. He wanted to point out that 99% of "artists" anonymously work in packaging/advertising/crafting industries. He wanted to bring attention to the fact that items we see every day like a soup can label or a cookie jar are brilliant designs created by "every day" artists. Man, it's a good thing Sam Jackson has dialogue written for him-what terrible grammar! But I think he means that there are all kinds of "movies" presented for entertainment where the action matters more than other elements. I disagree with his comparison-even the Warner Brothers cartoons have story arcs and often brilliant dialogue within the action gags. I find SuperHero movies the equivalent of this: Brainless entertainment. -
Great observation! When I saw the first TS that was exactly what I thought: here's a bunch of unrelated toys all playing together-that's how I (& every other kid) played. Do kids still play that way? (no, I betcha kids only "play" with their noses to a screen)

The cinema photography is what elevates this film as "great" for me. The performances, sets, writing all vary from good to great, but it's the "look" and atmosphere created that leaves an impression in your psyche long after. The more Ouspenskaya, the better the movie. That's me in 20 years. She's the spitting image of those on my Hungarian side of the family-who were distantly related to Bela Lugosi.

One of the funniest things I ever heard was from my best friend in High School who has an IQ of something like 130, "When I was a little kid and saw Godzilla movies, I honestly thought Japanese people had some kind of weird magical language where their lips didn't match the words spoken." I don't think ANY kid took these movies seriously (not "serious"- grammar police) Godzilla was a movie version of the sort of childhood games we'd play with dolls. Always big drama: Barbie was captured by the big stuffed animal toy, kept prisoner in the cave (made from blanket folding) and GI Joe had to rescue her. Hot Wheels cars teeny scale made the dolls seem huge!

My bf bought me a purple Fiat (to match my hair) for my first car. I never learned to drive that stick so it ended up his car anyway. I've only spoken to him ONCE in 40 years and the car was the main topic of conversation-he has a restored one now, most likely not purple. My Dad had a teeny MG convertible for awhile, we called it "The Green Bug" I loved it but it rode like a tin can. I'm going to show Mr Tiki that Volvo and suggest we buy one of those, tart it up with subtle hints of hearse elements and use it as our "touring" car, for the 2 big dogs to ride in the back coffin area. Way more practical than going the authentic Jag Hearse route. (although the thought of having a 12 cyl engine Jag appeals to me)

Re: Freddy Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody '18- I thought pretty realistically portrayed. Mercury was kind of bi-sexual in that he only was attracted to those who were attracted to him. So a lot of implied shots of men gazing at him back stage, his confused then intrigued response forming relationships that led to intimacy. There were only two scenes of men spontaneously kissing him, no sex scenes, thankfully. I was watching with my Mom and I'm glad it was kept minimal & implied. I'm not so hopeful about ROCKETMAN, because I know Elton's early experiences were similar to Mercury's.... touring and fame at a young age can be isolating and very confusing as to who your real friends are. I'll watch Rocketman alone first and will only share it with my Mom if it's not too graphic.

Diahann Carroll was this 10 year old girl's role model as Julia. I remember the hub bub about the new TV show, but didn't really understand why it was "groundbreaking". I just thought she was the prettiest woman I had ever seen and had to have the Julia Barbie: It was a revelation hearing her sing & seeing her in classic films like Paris Blues. She was paired perfectly with Poitier, although in MY world Julia stole Ken away from bland, vapid Barbie. Never watched those night time soaps, but love her character (& couture!) I hope she had a fulfilling life, her talents brought lots of pleasure to the world.

Could it be part of the idea of disturbing the Mummy's rest by moving him? I'd surely walk the earth in distress if exhumed. My 90 year old Mother has been my house guest for 2 weeks. Last night I ran BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY '18 for her because she loved Queen and especially Freddie Mercury. She was enraptured with the story and loved the film, it was a great choice. I however, had a few problems with it. Everyone had buzzed about how great Rami Malek is as Freddy, well I disliked his portrayal. I thought the prosthetic teeth were ill fitting, distracting and made him look goofy-especially when singing. While Malek did an ok job of imitating Mercury, if you've watched the real Mercury perform, he was much more vibrant, snappy, a master of movement. I know Malek was trained to imitate Mercury's gestures & movement, but he came off blander than Mercury on stage. I also called foul on the recording studio scenes. "Bohemian Rhapsody" was not Queen's first foray into operatic sounding songs-there was pretty much ONE per album-just like there was a happy "show tune" type song every album and a hard rock song every album. Just "Rhapsody" is the only song familiar to those whom only know Queen's radio hits. It was fun however to hear so many references to one of my favorite Queen songs-Roger Taylor's "I'm In Love With My Car". Every reference made Mom laugh even though she isn't familiar with it. The actors chosen to portray Brian May, Roger Taylor & John Deacon were pretty spot on though. And I recognized all their performance costumes. It's a good film for most people who don't know anything about the band or Freddy's personal story, obviously events were successfully condensed/altered to create a good story arc.

Wow-don't know what's prettiest-the car, the mountains or the gal! Woot! Cinema's Best car is Harold's Jag-Hearse: I realized watching this movie yet again, this car would be a super easy one to craft-you just extend the back bumper an extra foot and attach the back sheet metal "box" roof and window. MrTiki has been looking at old Jags of this vintage. If he finds one I'll betcha we have it made into one of these.

Thanks! I too loved the first book-never realized she was a child prodigy until reading it. -
I love this thread. One of my favorite movies is DEATH TO SMOOCHY. I was dating someone who worked for FBC who was making a "Made In Canada" promo film who told me it was "the worst film ever made". (Jon Stewart also says this) Of course, I had to borrow it from the library. I loved it. It's a black comedy. Perfectly cast & acted by all principles. Apparently, Canadians just didn't "get" it-couldn't they tell from the title? (plus I got a nice Robin Williams autograph as Randy Rainbow from it!)

Love Glenda Jackson-that's great news.

I loved your post....especially expressing "sadness" observing incompatible couples. Guess that's really the reason I've been so judgmental of Woody's behaviour. I was married to a man almost 20 years older and while I was excited to go out & discover the world & everything life offers, he'd say, "Eh, been there, done that." So of course, I think of Soon Yi & Woody in similar terms and feel sad for her. It seems like she's missing out on regular emotional development. But hey, that may have come just from being a celebrity's child. It's funny because Mr Tiki & I are complete opposites-he's super social, I'm anti-social and it works out great- he's the life of the party and I can retreat in a corner with food/wine and enjoy vicariously!

Also disrespectfully disagree, the word "predatory" is wholly appropriate when there is an imbalance of knowledge & power. Any person manipulating another's confidence (con man) for personal gain is a predator. This story is really none of our business and we're judging others' behaviour based on media reports & our personal morality. Guess it's the same for watching his movies-some aren't concerned by his personal foibles while others are bothered by it.

Yeah as much as I love Gloria Grahame on the screen, knowing that about her gives me the heebie jeebies. I genuinely feel sorry for her. If it really happened, that's awful. If her mother coached her, that's also awful. She is a victim of someone, perhaps even of both parties to some degree. Nicely stated-I feel exactly the same. Just sordid. the beauty of it all is that it's our individual prerogative to do so if we choose. Agree also. I read a lot of movie star biographies. It seems difficult for those in show business to lead normal no, typical lifestyles. And if you're the child of famous who becomes famous on your own, like Liza Minelli or Carrie Fisher, life must be surreal. You don't have the opportunity to casually interact with people your own age, developing a sense of how you fit in the world. Michael Jackson seemed to have suffered greatly from his incredible fame, robbing a sensitive child of any normal mental & emotional development. Plus, look at how things are smeared in media. Everywhere. There's no Louis B Mayer to sweep your indiscretions under the rug. Honestly, we've all done things we're not proud of. But remain our little secrets.

I've seen several of Preston Sturges's "best" films and the only great one in my opinion is LADY EVE. While I like SULLIVANS TRAVELS, and a few others, they seems to lack "something" keeping them from being great-either substandard dialogue, editing...something fails. I believe often, it's the story arc that snags or drags. I've found seeing "lacking" films in a theater setting with an audience often elevates them. Possibly I need to concentrate more, get absorbed in the story more than I can watching home alone. I tried reading a Preston Sturges biography and lost interest in that too. He apparently was very privileged & eccentric his entire life and like that he made films with a "message".

This is also erroneous. People just throw out these numbers. By all accounts I've ever read, Woody and Soon-Yi began a romantic relationship when he was 56 and she was 22. I wasn't speaking of Woody & Soon Yi specifically. I was citing a relationship between a 50 y/o and 15 y/o would be considered SICK by most. That is a 35 year gap in age, the same gap as Woody & Soon Yi's ages. Anyone can understand a young person being dazzled by a successful, powerful celebrity. The fault lies in the older, supposedly mature person, who should know better and leave the poor girl alone, no matter how enticing it seems.
