Uh oh, rest assured, you're not the only one who experiences this. Rather than thinking it's a sign of aging (oh the horror) convince yourself that you have too many more important things on your mind than remembering a movie. Knowing the finite number of good classic movies, it's great when you can watch & enjoy a movie again.

Agree wholeheartedly with Winter Under The Stars!! (also agree Oscars theme is too narrow) Winter in Syracuse/Drearycuse/Siberacuse- the weather conditions encourage epic movie watching. Instead of Flar-ida", I winter in India" because there's nothing like cuddling up with a down blanket and watching a 3 hour Bollywood with a big bowl of Tandoori during a blizzard.

When this opening would come on Sat Morning Kids Movie, I'd quick turn the TV by the Tor Johnson #3 face! It would take me awhile to calm down & stop quaking-I would have been the only one in the house & was terrified of ghosts (I have a neurological issue and sometimes hear "voices"-creepy!) After discovering how schlocky William Castle movies are, I decided to overcome my fear & rented 13 Ghosts from the local video store. I loved it, and a decade later was thrilled to see it projected in a theater on 35mm. I didn't find the winged monkeys scary until watching The Wizard Of Oz in college on weed. Same for the Queen in Snow White. I think her calm voice is particularly menacing-a great call by the voice actress.

Haha, my business is in my family home which I bought decades ago. The entire first floor is a working studio but I keep my computers in the office upstairs, otherwise they would get paint spattered all over them. So in actuality, I am closer to living in my Mom's basement than you! -
Androgyny. Most models keep their hair tightly held back, often covered in a baseball cap. Seriously, this simply misdirection would work well for any famous person wanting to blend incognito.

I can picture you just visualizing similarities between those two beauties. As an artist, I find facial recognition an amazing subject. I'm attracted to long faces with large features. As a teen I gazed John Kobals books of Hollywood photography for HOURS. From modeling, I learned quickly how the camera lies and love seeing a famous person's face in person. Super models look like little boys in real life. I find we are inherently attracted to symmetry and suspecting of asymmetry. The most oddly asymmetrical face I've seen in years:

Boy, Paramount Loved the Song Isn't It Romantic
Tikisoo replied to sewhite2000's topic in General Discussions
It's my signature song on uke. I'm trying to modify "When her muscles start relaxing, up the hill comes Andrew Jackson" to something about Michael Jackson. Any suggestions keeping with the spirit of the song? -
I just watched a double feature from TCM last month, two comedies "of their time" from 1970-71.... First was COLD TURKEY '71. This is a typical Norman Lear production that includes his regular stable of comedians seen in many of his TV shows. It's the story of a downtrodden town that tries winning a contest for giving up smoking cigarettes for ONE MONTH, without cessation, a definition of the slang title. Addiction as hilarity ensues while everyone in town snaps at each other and substitutes food for smoke, raiding the 'fridge. Dick Van Dyke in his "mod cool" long hair is the town preacher, guiding his flock, giving his usual excellent performance. The talent in this movie was packed with great, but too brief performances: Tom Poston's character just LEAVES TOWN for a month, which would be my inclination. Jean Stapleton is a hilarious standout, but also seen is Vincent Gardenia, Bob Newhart, Bernard Hughes, Paul Benedict and Bob & Ray. I was thrilled to spot in an almost non speaking role Gloria LeRoy, who played a character on ALL IN THE FAMILY. Sadly, Edward Everette Horton is very close to his death in a non verbal role. I saw this in the theater with my parents and remember them laughing heartedly all the way through it. Overall, a one time viewing for me-I enjoyed it but wouldn't watch it again. (nice poster drawn by a Mad Magazine artist) The second movie, Myra Breckenridge '70 was a total disaster. Apparently, the character played by Rex Reed has a sex change operation and becomes Raquel Welch and tries breaking into Hollywood. Welch is absolutely gorgeous and shows decent acting ability and talent, but not strong enough to overcome a very bad story. There's quite a bit of old Hollywood homage, but it's trite and often mean rather than celebratory. It was beautifully filmed but pretty unwatchable and thankfully I slept through 20 minutes of it. Guess the shock value has diminished with time. So sorry Raquel & Mae, I wanted to like both of you in this.

Wow Mom's basement is well supplied! π -
OK, I owe it to the film to give it another try...obviously I was turned off by the subject matter & Hoffman's weird performance the first time around and just didn't embrace the charactors. So many people love it, there HAS to be something great there. The way you all describe it's negative vibe & ending, it reminds me of SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, another movie in my queue (since recently visiting the filming location)

Thanks for telling me -I'm so easily confused- I wasn't sure.π

Thanks for the OP Holden. Several people I know just LURVE this movie and I was talked into seeing it for the first time about a decade ago. I hated it. Especially Dustin Hoffman's charactor. I'm going to chalk it up to expectation-my expectation was MIDNIGHT COWBOY was going to be one of those "everyone is going to like it" movies like SOME LIKE IT HOT or PAPER MOON, but it's obviously not. MIDNIGHT COWBOY is one of those movies I'll just have to watch again. Now that I know the themes are rather dark I'll give it another shot.

What are you just saying? Did you already say it? Then why do you have to tell us you just said it? π Sorry, "just saying" is one of my pet peeves in conversation. (the other one "It is what it is"....well then, what IS it?)

Films Which Are Considered Classics Which You Can't Stand.

I was AGHAST at the idea of her taking a boy "back" as if taking a dog back to the pound because it chewed your slippers! OY! -

Whoa. It took a few readings for me to realize you meant the ACTOR in THE FILM. (not the moniker changing poster on these boards) Whew! And for the record: I hated Roger Rabbit walking out of the theater. I couldn't believe everyone else loved it. Then they said, "It was great seeing all my favorite charactors again." to which I replied: hollow gimmick. Bob Hoskins great acting couldn't even save it. -

Wow! Like Sewhite said, everyone should give some movies outside your bubble a try once in a while. I may not like a certain genre, but try watching the best example of that genre. It wouldn't be popular if it had no redeeming qualities. No Astaire, no Temple? I've seen their movies enrapture hard core goth boys - their eyes were glued to the screen. My movie buddy has said "every movie is worth watching ONCE" and doing so has changed my opinion-especially when seeing them in a theater. Also some movies get better as you age....while some movies diminish. The movies don't change, you do. That's how I felt about THE EXORCIST. When I finally saw it about 15 years ago, all the shock scenes just turned into another aspect of the story. And it turned out to be a pretty good story with tolerable gore effects. Like 2001, when you put all the "parts" of GWTW together, it makes a pretty epic story. One guy I knew refused to see it because of the preconceived notion of Scarlett being a silly spoiled girl. He was sobbing by the intermission. Remember-those are the qualities needed to perform on stage in front of people. Maybe Mickey didn't know how to tone it down as well as others for the intimacy of the camera. Well, the classic movies I'll never watch again already have been mentioned- STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE- I loathe Brando in this especially. MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON- dull, unbelievable & too corny for even me! DR ZHIVAGO- an entire film that celebrates adultery CASABLANCA, VERTIGO, THE THIRD MAN- I never "got" what was so great about these meh. GODFATHER- terrible stereotype, terrible violence, terrible Brando -
My brother knows I love movie locations so he just sent me these pictures of an Adam Sandler movie in production in his town- The historic Inn: And how it's been dressed for the movie: (working title: Hubie Halloween...supposed to be taking place in Salem Mass)

Yes, I do think my Dad resembles a young Norman Lloyd, but Hunts Hall & Ray D. Steckler more since Dad looks like a goof. (hey, he was 19!) Remember the camera LIES. That photo does not look like me at all. I was often called a "Cher type" and "Angelica Huston type" because of having long faces with prominent noses. As for having that man wanted look in her eyes, I was 14-15 y/o there (with BRACES!) Dargo gets the "James Coburn" thing because of your big sparkling smile! Dargo is much better looking than Coburn, imho. I never would have guessed that was really you CigarJoe, I thought it was some classic actor like Burt Lancaster in unusual make up.

No, it's horizontal and shows the curved wall & witnesses (as I recall) can't seem to find it among my unframed lobbies. It actually may be with MrTikis "law enforcement" lobbies elsewhere. (mine are mostly rom-com Judy Holliday/Leslie Caron type images) I bought it because I also found it rather shocking.
-
You know, I was going to say that too, because that's who I see. Thank goodness I look like my Mom. OK is this photo evocative of anyone famous?
-
How about people we know? My parents: Everyone said my Dad looked exactly like Hunts Hall. I'm sure he didn't like hearing that. When I saw this picture of Ingrid Bergman in another thread, I thought she looked like my Mom:

For those of you interested in movie graphic arts: I thought that was pretty good. And I'll tell you why I like having DVDs of fave movies- when you have the DVD, there's no charge watching it whenever the mood strikes you.

Heh I just found a note scribbled when watching TV: "I just lost a duel of wits with an unarmed opponent" Any one know what this is from? Sounds like something John Barrymore or Errol Flynn would say.

Quality movies that you don't want to see again
Tikisoo replied to Stephen444's topic in General Discussions
There's a few movies that were really great, but I had to steel myself to watch them due to the violence. The one that pops in my head first is Paul Newman in SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME '56. I also really liked but will never watch PAPPILLON '73 again mostly because of annoying Dustin Hoffman. Only saw DAYS OF WINE & ROSES once too, difficult to watch. Then there's the movies I'll NEVER see because you just know "the dog is going to die at the end" like SOUNDER '72 and MARLEY & ME '08.
