Agreed. You know my classic movie journey started with WB films, then expanded to all the others....and now find my preferences returning back to WB. They weren't the most lavish productions, but they sure had talented screenwriters/actors and consistently delivered great, succinct movies that almost everyone can enjoy. Not so much when dreaming, but I bet it's annoying "other" times. 😉

Yeah, the title indicates inarticulation & deterred me from opening it. ..and I wasn't disappointed. I just found out MrTiki has never seen CASABLANCA. I'm not a fan but would absolutely attend a screening-it could make all the difference in my enjoyment of the movie. Something about this movie seems to appeal to men, especially. Maybe Ingrid Bergman?

Yeah, how can a filmmaker know what that person was thinking or their motivation? Every biopic is an impression/interpretation to some extent.

Well that's a loaded gun. It could skew everything else watched on that TV. It's one of the reasons I'm SONY brand loyal. I know what Sony Colors look like and prefer that to other brands/manufacturers. I judge the overall colors by the blacks & saturation. I detest "high definition" pictures because the contrast is way too harsh. High Def is really just High Contrast. So I often watch old B&W movies in "theater" mode, which softens harsh, too bright whites.

I don't care for CHINA SEAS nor GRAND HOTEL. We screened Grand Hotel and I didn't like it much better with an audience. (I do however enjoy ensemble flick DINNER AT EIGHT) OTOH, I love Garbo and completely understand her appeal. I love ANNA CHRISTIE but do think her most accessible movie is NINOTCHKA. She is good, but basically a one note actress playing herself. I love that there's movies for everybody, every taste - that's why they're "classic".

I love Joanne Woodward. I'm so glad I got her autograph while I could. I think she's a great actress & decent, kind person.

I love Roz, she is a unique personality. I like her brash charactor best in THE WOMEN '39- an ensemble piece full of fabulous performances, a fun movie if a bit long. The "Eye" dress she wears in one scene is a riot. You're so right about the genius of Adrian costumes. Roz is also well known for her early role in Howard Hawks' HIS GIRL FRIDAY '40, in which she's great, but all the frantic yelling kind of gets to me after awhile. Her signature role was the stage struck Mother in GYPSY '62 but if you don't like musicals...she plays a similar outspoken charactor in AUNTIE MAME '58. She's also adds great flavor to the late THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS '66 as Mother Superior in this light tween comedy.

Agree with your take on historical films. In the case of The King & I/Anna & The King, it's really just a story based on historical charactors and possibly one real event, much like Funny Girl or Young Abe Lincoln. Then you look at Rossalini's War Trilogy and it's more like a documentary of real events with a fictional but typical story to illustrate. And then you have Judgement At Nuremberg, a dramatization of true history, using the real transcripts.

Love this conversation as I agree with all the Lee Remick, John Huston & Flynn comments. Could any other actress imprint the simple line, "He likes to go"? Never a bad performance. As an older person who also lived a brash & "wicked" youth, I much appreciate Flynn's autobiography. Most of us have a vast different perspective of our lives when older, some minor events became life-changing & once huge emotional events like romances become intellectualized over time. Who knows who cares? It's a well written great autobiography of what he wanted to say. I also really love this book: ..but I'm a Kate Hepburn fan. Hepburn is a pro & trouper but still a woman and she describes the rough conditions, having to dress behind a bush & fix herself for filming. It's a thin book & easy to find. I've purchased several copies as gifts.

Well I'm going to NYC the last weekend in May too. My itinerary includes a couple of movie star gravesites, a few classic movie locations as well as some live performances. Why not do the reference yourself? Findagrave.com & Hollywood Graveyard both are great resources for important burial sites. NYC Location Scout is an awesome online resource for movie locations. Although I'm not sure he has included my fave - the millionaire's castle from The Fisher King at Hunter College. I don't need some teen on a bus to point out the Dakota Building and tell me why it's "significant".

My favorite political punk band Chumbawamba had written an original Ding Dong song for Thatcher to be released upon her death, "So Long, So Long". The explanation of how you pre-purchased & received it posthumously is in the intro- (yeah, I bet none of you realized the band was kind of folksy)

(Sorry, screwy editor won't allow a response to 2nd quote^^^) I liken this movie to a biopic about Orange Boy. Telling the story of their personal life will indicate how they conducted themselves on the job. Telling anything about their job would only infuriate viewers. All viewers.

I avoided seeing this & was glad you started a thread on your impressions of it, thanks. I'm actually more interested in it knowing it focuses solely on the person, not politics - making it into a wholly different movie. Although doesn't everyone's career influence their personal life? Thanks for the warning about confusion/Alzheimers element too, it matters to my enjoyment of the story.

Heh, I moved here in 1998 and stored all my possessions from the moving van in the attic, in attempt to not "take over" my grandma's house. She's been gone a decade & I'm still dispersing everything among friends, relatives and ebay. Very little is accepted back into living space.

Have you found Gary yet? Where did you find this movie? I once received 40 Something Weird Video DVDs as a gift 🤩it may be on the shelf. Wonder if I could find it streaming.... I love the opposing feelings about Eddie Coyle- making me want to see it just to compare! Kingrat, I love your succinct & sensitive posts but especially your acknowledgment of different "tastes" and reactions to movies. I also now want to see KILLIMANJARO, which I've avoided because I don't care for Gregory Peck. I must confess though, I usually get the gist of longer posts by the second or third paragraph & stop reading. I don't want to know too much so I can see the same movie with fresh eyes.
