Exactly. Today, the only classic movie stars they may know are stars like Audrey, Marilyn, Dean and maybe Mae West and Chaplin because of their images used in pop culture items like t-shirts & advertising.
Most Baby Boomers (now seniors) probably could recognize & name Gable by face, but the only movie they could name he was in is GWTW. Most would have never heard of RED DUST or MANHATTAN MELODRAMA.

Scrolling through Netflix Documentaries, I stumbled across I AM DIVINE! an absolutely wonderful film about the entertainer made in 2013.
As a huge fan, I knew most facts about his life & his work but MrTiki had no idea what Divine was about. I'm sure several of the scenes in the documentary were shocking to him (you know the one) but Divine's story is told in a very respectful, honorable way mostly by those who knew him best.
It was particularly heartwarming to hear about his childhood from interviews with his Mother & see photos of him as a teenager with his prom date. Most don't realize Glen Milstead was a very handsome, beautiful man despite his weight and there are several interviews included with him dressed as a normal person, out of costume-see trailer.
A decent amount of time was spent on the evolution of the charactor he portrayed and especially the make up artist that created the now iconic sweeping eyebrows and exaggerated lipstick. It also brought to light a few aspects of his career even I wasn't aware of, like his recordings & nightclub acts, I thought he was only a movie star in John Waters films.
Rickie Lake discussed that Milstead was kind of upset with the idea he wasn't the "star" of HAIRSPRAY and Mrs Turnblatt wore really unflattering hausfrau clothing instead of outlandish costumes, but quickly embraced the role like a true professional. I'm grateful he took the role if only to prove his talent as an actor to a mainstream audience.
My personal belief is the measure of a person's life is how much pleasure they have brought to others. Divine is one of those people who gave much more to the world than he received, like Judy Garland. And boy, would Divine love to be included on any list along side Judy Garland!
By the end of this tribute, I knew even MrTiki has come to respect the Divine force.

Gable was the first classic movie star I fell in love with as a teen, most likely in IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT. Already mentioned he was great in every role, even costume pictures. It's not his mustache, it's his dimples.
He likes horses with oversize ears too!

Funny you mention THE GODFATHER....first saw it at the Drive-In with my Mom & Grandmother. They told me to close my eyes at the horse/bed scene. I watched the movie as an adult & covered my eyes for that & several other scenes.
Yup, that's me alright, except I don't scream.

It looks very different now, big glass windows & neon lighting a stucco exterior. Wish the castle was there, we might have stayed longer. The Gay Dolphin was the only thing we liked about Myrtle Beach and left two days early to visit other attractions in N Carolina.
What is "beach" music? Is it different than 60's "surf" music?

Last documentary we watched had the "smoking" & "language" warning and MrTiki said, "We've become such snowflakes we have to WARN people there may be scenes of people smoking?" Like what's harmful about SEEING someone smoking? Amazing.
When I sense a violent scene coming up that may make me uncomfortable, I just close my eyes. Big deal.

Don't know, but I've removed "Adults Only" banner stickers from full size Canadian movie posters in my restoration shop. Removed this warning slapped on a SOME LIKE IT HOT poster and THE APARTMENT, I believe. Canadians are more easily offended, I guess.

I agree-Maltin's selections are a TREAT! He is an avid movie fan and like so many of us, have seen the "classics" ad nauseam. Love the rarer titles & recorded a few to watch later.
I love Maltin's books, his Movie Crazy musings & his insights of classic film. Miss seeing Leonard & Alice at rare film festivals! (and listening in to his conversations)

Thanks for mentioning Bogie's skills, the best actors are the ones you don't notice acting. Probably why so many don't care for the hammy "stage" style of acting.
As for my spelling, I was taught "proper" English in school. Guess you don't recall it, but the entire "superfluous U" controversy began as a personal snark when a poster realized I spell some word (which one?) with a U compared to "US" English that does not use it. Please just let it lie.

Last night I watched a library copy of THE BLACK LEGION, a 1937 WB movie starring Humphrey Bogart. I've heard a lot about this movie on these boards and thought I should check it out. According to Wiki, it's a fictionalized treatment based on a true story of a white vigilante group that kidnapped & killed a man only a few years earlier in Michigan. This centered more on immigrants than race (although THEY were immigrants!) but it doesn't matter, fear/hate is stupid in any form.
All of the acting was superb, I mainly wanted to see Ann Sheridan, who is delectable as usual, but not a main charactor. Bogie was great, very young but I hated the charactor he played. Most notable was charactor actor extraordinaire Joseph Sawyer-you know the guy:
The script was good, the photography was good, the editing & direction moved this along at a quick pace. But like WB's THE STRAWBERRY BLONDE, I can't stand seeing some actors like Cagney or Bogie playing dumb clucks that ruin their lives over bad decisions. Glad I saw it once though, certainly an important illustration of how these bewbs think.
I also tuned in to Netflix's HUBIE HALLOWEEN '20 mostly because it was filmed in my old digs of Marblehead/SalemMA. My brother sent me a photo of a house I know well all "dressed" for ONE scene as it turns out. It is on the same street as the house in HOME BEFORE DARK '58 with Jean Simmons. (nothing changes in Marblehead) The clock tower frequently shown is Marblehead's Abbott Hall, also predominate in HOME BEFORE DARK and the SIXTH SENSE. Several scenes take place in Crosby's grocery store!
I have never seen an Adam Sandler movie, but it was worth checking out. Sandler plays the most annoying simple minded yet sweet & kind buffoon neighbor who lives with his Mom. Sandler could have played his charactor as smart & sweet, like Edward Norton did in DEATH TO SMOOCHY, greatly adding to the character's likability & eliminating his annoyance factor-you almost understand why he's constantly picked on.
The movie is packed with familiar faces including hilarious couple Maya Rudolph & Tim Meadows who has not aged a DAY in decades. Steve Buschemi moves next door to Hubie and raises suspicions throughout the movie when people who pick on Hubie mysteriously disappear one by one. Ray Liotta, Julie Bowen, & Kenan Thompson were also familiar standouts. (great performances by China Anne McClain, June Squibb were new to me)
I now see why Sandler movies are popular, they are kind of like an Andy Hardy with bite. This movie has a simple plot with an underlying "message" with several levels of humor ranging from silly physical slapstick to teen/fratboy jokes and a few adult LOL moments. It's the sort of movie parents can watch with their kids, while illustrating fair treatment of others. It was a very high quality production-great looking, well written & edited. Just silly.

As someone who has dealt with fiberglass, this is just my personal take on it:
"Fiberglass" for a car, boat, chair surface, etc is polyester fabric laid down conforming to the surface (fiber) then epoxy resin is brushed or poured over to seal & turn rock hard (glass)
I've seen fiberglass in fine fabric grade polyester and thick weave Kevlar-like polyester depending on the time period & application. Apparently there are several different grades & levels of polyesters & resins, some free-standing (like a chair) and some covering a wood or sheet metal base.

Agreed. Especially notable this thread survives on it's own organic path of discussion. Speedracer does not interject with one sentence responses just to pad the thread count.
I just watched THE RUNAWAY BUS '54
As a fan of Margaret Rutherford, I had a fair idea of what kind of movie this would be & it did not disappoint. A British farcical type comedy, short & sweet with fabulous performances of all kinds from straight camp to slapstick. While I found his adult prat falling silly, the snarky one line zingers written for Frankie Howard often made me LOL. He is the malcontent bus driver with a bunch of loony passengers in a kind of mystery whodunit akin to an Abbot & Costello movie.
Rutherford pretty much played her predictable self, a crusty old lady (personal aspiration of mine) and Petula Clark was a gorgeous gal in uniform. Clark was such a talented actor, singer, dancer, really pretty....why wasn't she a bigger star?
Only a 78 minute investment, This is the kind of movie to escape your daily doldrums.

Is the version you're watching include interviews with the filmmakers & the reasons for the production? It was never supposed to follow their entire lives, but glad it did! Life was so different when I was a kid....imagine....people worked real jobs!
I am the same age as the kids & remember seeing 7 to 21UP in college psych class. I've seen each installment the year it comes out except last years 70 UP.
There is a new American version, but somehow watching kids with their faces stuck in a phone doesn't appeal to me.

And they were ALL more Presidential than you-know-who.
Ralph Bellamy gained my respect as a really good actor when I saw him in the aforementioned SUNRISE AT CAMPOBELLO '60. Until then, I thought he was just a fluff actor.
Langella is another fave actor, he always gives 100% and is wholly believable & riveting no matter how loathsome or badly costumed the charactor he's portraying.

My Mom watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade EVERY year. In 2000 in ailing health, I took her to NYC to see the Parade in person. We froze and huddled in the crowds. The most we saw were the huge balloons & tallest floats. We heard the bands but could not see them. Still, just going & being there will always be my most special memory with my Mom (91 & kicking') who will be watching this year.
She stayed back in the hotel (Pennsylvania 6500) while I checked out all the department store displays, since Visual Merchandiser used to be my job back in the days when we had retail stores.
Thanksgiving will be a solo experience this year, TV shows are a poor substitute.

If TCM had sheduled M*A*S*H, there would be those complaining that it was the only movie shown about the War in Korea. Or if TCM scheduled Good Morning Viet Nam, there would be complaints it was "too new", "a comedy" or something or other.
A channel dedicated to showing un cut, commercial free movies should be enough, why complain about what's offered?

And Creighton Chaney also was looking good in this film. While his breathy voice can sound a little stilted, his face is so expressive & sweet. This movie was just beautifully photographed by George Robinson at Universal.
Probably the high point of this years Halloween.

You never know what expensive "package" NOTORIOUS may be bundled with. I think only movie theaters can rent just ONE movie, broadcast stations have to rent bundled packages, often containing unrelated titles.
The other titles may be stinkers TCM just doesn't want to show. I know CASABLANCA is like that, part of a very expensive package, which is why it's not shown very often.
This is the whole reason TCM has Saturday serials and Friday night UNDERGROUND-a place to put all those unrelated titles in the bundle.

Successful modern filmmakers like the Coen Brothers & Quentin Tarentino are keeping teeny vestiges of classic film alive by referencing them in their films. Every film school grad pours over & learns from the classics-then they borrow or nod to them in their films. When the masses enjoy these new films, they often seek out the originals, ("oranges" haha) and are often just as entranced by them as the filmmaker.
What young person isn't going to be sucked in seeing Cagney work his magic in ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES? Didn't we all get a taste for classic film by discovering the "greats"? We quickly discovered B&W movies were just as good as new movies.
Yeah, I was just thinking the other day, I've never seen BACK TO THE FUTURE, now considered a "classic" film.
I do think think many of today's popular movies will soon be forgotten because they're really not strong enough with storyline, dialogue & charactors, relying too much on "effects". Although, our generation's "effects" movies like CLASH OF THE TITANS is revered for it's creative special effects.
