No love for Ralph Richardson? Along with John Mills & Alec Guinness, they seem like "the big three", most celebrated lead actors in British films. Looking at British actors/actresses, that's how I'd differentiate them in the category from say, someone just born in UK, like E. Taylor.

I loved it as a kid-the Munsters in COLOR! Seeing it as an adult, somehow I still really enjoy it, much like THE GHOST & MR CHICKEN, most likely because of high production values & (under appreciated) top notch talent! I just watched a Leslie Nielson documentary and it seems like several really talented strong film actors floundering in movies found new stride in TV slapstick comedy. Obviously talented enough to carry a movie version of their charactors.

Haha I said EXACTLY the same thing in the 80's when Costner was hotter than a tailpipe. It's funny to watch others come around to seeing it. I've always said the same thing about Tom Hanks, people still take me to task for it. My feelings about Hank's ineptitude have softened a bit as he's matured, but he's still a lazy actor. Hanks-like Costner, only succeeds by a strong script, supporting players & production.

Wow I'm a big Bogdanovich fan and did not enjoy this movie at all! (despite such a stellar cast) Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to give it another try.

I don't see them as "smaller" just not super hyped like action movies for fanboys... instead movies targeted to more adult sensibilities. My assessment of the OP complaint: obviously those putting out comic book/action films are targeting a specific audience who they believe are more interested by the "look" of the movie over "content". These movies are designed & orchestrated to reach their target audience. Possibly the OP wishes "action" movies could be more "adult"? I sure do.

Haha I was with a film director when we stumbled into a LOTR movie by mistake and I heard disparaging comments throughout the 2 hours: "...ugh bad lighting, styrofoam set, wooden delivery, who chose THAT? etc" In my 2000's pile is: She's Funny That Way '15, Grandma '15, Brooklyn '15, Tims Vermeer '13, Stan & Ollie '18, Secretariat '10, Darjeeling Ltd '07, Moonrise Kingdom '12..... and conclude there are still worthwhile movies being made. Note: these movies are well acted, well written and contain some cgi effects. Heck- I, Tonya '17 is full of cgi and that was well written & acted.

I've finally had the time to organize & sort my "modern" DVD recordings and was surprised to find my 70's decade has the most number of disks (20) then steadily decline to the present. I think I only had one movie from the 80's and 2 from the 90's and 4 from the 2000's.

Just caught your Karloff video - EXCELLENT- so glad I subscribed! Other family members are watching your videos now too! The first movie that came to mind to recommend is Bogdanovich's TARGETS '68. Karloff plays himself.

Wow, interesting story about the radio station-cool! I was advised never to see it on TV, esp the first viewing. My TV is rather small by today's standards, but the experience is greatly enhanced by 4.1 surround sound. People pay big money for laser disks, they're hard to find and 2001 is a great one. I watched 2001 A SPACE ODYSSY on TCM last night. I made dinner during the first "Ape Man" section, it's my least favorite. As soon as the bone was tossed, I sat down to watch. 2001 is one of my very favorite films and I haven't seen it since showing it to my stepdaughter over 5 years ago. I kind of narrated it for her to follow & at the end her arms flew up in the air & she said, "That is the greatest movie EVER!" well, if it needs narration, it's not the greatest. This time around, I was rapt in attention and the story seemed to fly by. I can see how for many, there would seem to be long dragging lags of time, but for me that just illustrated "space". I especially like the white noise sound used for illustrating space and the maelstrom of human voices for the Monolith. Another brilliant decision. Later, talking about it on the phone, (what did you do today?)I was asked if seeing it so many times, did I ever discover anything new? This time around, I was struck by how HAL kind of becomes human, (deciding to kill, "my mind is going I can feel it", singing a song) and the human Bowman becomes a calculated "machine"-he does not speak but just performs his job without emotion. Nice touch Kubrick. I also reiterated my story of seeing it screened in 35mm at the Wang Center in Boston (a big vintage movie palace) with friends. I was the ONLY person in my group who found it thrilling, obviously I never tire of watching it. It is an artistic achievement.

Next week one of my favorites-MUNSTER GO HOME! I just came across my DVD of it and thought about popping it in, but always prefer live TV.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I'm kind of glad it's being released slowly, so I can savor it. Bogdanovich's story is even better than I expected! Ben does a wonderful job narrating, and the sound production is top notch, THANK YOU!!

Those two have slightly close set eyes. This miniscule facial feature can be off-putting in an inner primal sort of subliminal way because it's a "predator" look?

I enjoyed the OUR MISS BROOKS movie and catching the radio episodes every once in awhile. As a teacher, I really liked her speech about "helping young minds to become engaged, interesting adults" or however she says it. I thought Gale Gordon was hilarious too. Arden was so stately & pretty, it was her sarcastic voice that made her a memorable charactor. I always thought she carried herself with the same posture, movements & demeanor as Vincent Price.

Two streaming channels Pluto and Tubi both have legit live feeds of vintage TV shows. They also give you the option of choosing individual episodes in their menu. I'm currently rewatching CYBILL and found fewer commercials over at Tubi.

Last night I watched TCMs circus theme late afternoon starting with THE MAIN ATTRACTION '62. This had to be part of the package TCM had to rent in order to get CASABLANCA. It was horrible to the nth degree. I actually vacuumed/dusted while it was on & only stopped when Boone sang. I then watched LILLI '53. This movie was 81 minutes of charming scenes & charactors of a small carnival starring Leslie Caron & Mel Ferrer. The story was sweet & predictable, but it's the way it was told that made it engaging. Leslie Caron was never so irresistible- she was demure, sweet & mesmerizingly beautiful. I loved the costumes & Technicolor. It was fun seeing glamorous ZsaZsa Gabor too, in a tight sequined dress trying to keep up in a fantasy dance number! I also liked the realistic portrayal of opportunists that kept the story from being too fairy tale-ish. That said, it makes an engaging ESSENTIALS JR introducing kids to how fun classic movies can be. I especially enjoyed the lovely dance sequence near the end illustrating Lilli's "daydream"- her inner thoughts. Even though I knew how it ended, it still brought a tear to my eye. Although I find nothing attractive about Mel Ferrer - he reminds me of evil JK Robertson from '94s TIME CHASERS '91 ) I kept TCM on while talking on the phone & watched THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS '42 without sound. Although the dialogue is great, if you're familiar with the story, it's amazing how well you can follow it with visuals only. In fact, it sort of points out all the amazing camera work. I also had forgotten that Richard Bennett -father of Constance & Joan-was in it. I LOL when they look at the newspaper & there's a Jed Leland column from CITIZEN KANE-forgotten all about that!

You are correct. Holliday was one of the first personalities I discovered after getting TCM. She didn't make many movies, but every one Is worth seeing. It's high time I see Full Of Life too. Some of you may remember I paid respects to her last year. She's very near the Gershwins, Tony Randall, John Garfield's final resting places. A gentleman who was a huge fan purchased the plot next to Judy's with a request of his stone have an arrow stating "I'm With Her!>>" Thankfully, the family did not honor his disrespectful request.
