  1. Yeah, so what whatever some bully says. I say,....man up & just be yourself. Last I knew it was a free country.
  2. No kidding? Thanks for the heads up- I will tune in just to see what plays in the time slot. Sure hope it's Beware Spooks- any chance to see '39 footage of Coney Island is GOLD for me.
  3. I just watched SARATOGA '37 the other night for the Harlow tribute. I think I've seen all Harlow's movies and never been impressed enough to own one. I find her voice squeaky and she has an odd look that doesn't translate well in B&W. Amazing I've never seen SARATOGA before, it was the most enjoyable one I can recall. A lot of Harlow's scenes were shot in profile, which she looks great. I liked her character-first played as a phony socialite, then softens towards Gable, who wouldn't? Gable plays his usual happy go lucky scammer and is his typical adorable self here. The plot revolves around horse racing and had me wincing in the first scene: both Gable & elderly Lionel Barrymore hold a horse by the halter-a very dangerous thing to do! The horse could pull a human up off the ground & break a hand, safer leverage to use a 6 foot lead rope. Amazing star stunts in early movies! The movie was a typical screwball comedy, well performed by all including fave support gals Una Merkel & Hattie McDaniel. Glad I saw it, but again don't want to own it.
  4. That was a nice write up, Tom. My grandmother thought Joe E Brown was riotous so I saw a lot of him when I moved in with Nana & brought in cable/TCM. I find Brown amusing only if in the right mood-not unlike other early comedians- the humor can seem kind of dated. I feel kind of sad he found a catchphrase (yyeeeooowww!) and relied on it so often. Look at how trim he kept himself as he aged (above pic)
  5. No, my hat (like Dargo's pictured earlier) my only Stetson-the one everyone mistakingly calls "Indiana Jones" hat. My Beige Fedora is a Bettman. It's got a peachy tone & I'm always afraid of soiling it. My 2 vintage real Panama straw hats-one white, one avocado are only worn for weddings & such. A modern hat is worn to protect my face & hair from sunburn in the garden. A hat for every occasion! They're stacked in about 10 hatboxes and need a tally sheet of which hat is in which box for quick retrieval. Winter hats are kept in a cedar chest with coats since many are wool/fur. You need different hats for different circumstances, especially weather. I can't imagine going through life with a limited wardrobe.
  6. I love Richard Mulligan in SOAP. He's a wonderful ham. MrTiki just bought LITTLE BIG MAN & I groaned because I find it stupid in a Forrest Gump way and exasperating for it's Native American tropes. But I'll give it another try just to see what I think of Mulligan in this.
  7. The only grown person who should wear a baseball cap is someone playing baseball. I don't wear my riding helmet to the market. My only fedora is beige and I rarely wear it-looks exactly like the previous example on the gal. I love those Peruvian & Pakistani wool hats but I live in Siberacuse - they are essential! I wear hats all the time, have over 100, about 75% vintage. TikiSoo's New Year Parties are legendary...you must be wearing a hat to enter. If you do not have one, you may choose from the "collection". Best year: the last to arrive was a sexy male bodybuilder friend of mine. No hats left for him but a vintage flower & net half hat: It was funnier than that, it had long feathers sticking up! He looked adorable all evening! I also wear ties very similar to Eddie Muller's ties- vintage "jazz" style - I like fashion, it's fun.
  8. Yummy. Nice hat too. I wear a similar hat when it's raining, a vintage Stetson. I love it because it's crushable. I hate when someone looks at me & blurts out "Indiana Jones" 🙄 While I think the popularity of the trilby & pork pies with a beard is kind of hipster, it's far far better than a baseball cap. Baseball caps remind me of Opie-is THAT the vibe you want to send?
  9. Steve Forrest is Dana Andrews' brother, spence. I think Dana Andrews appeal for Laura is: he's younger, has more common interests, a more "regular" guy.
  10. Wow, I was never impressed by LAURA-and I even saw it on the big screen! Either that, or I've completely forgotten it/mixing it up with something else. Guess I need to call the li-berry. And a cloche hat is small, bell shaped. Cloche is "bell" in French. The flapper's trademark:
  11. Did you have to sleep with the lights on? 🤡 Not a snark, I had to sleep with the lights on for a WEEK after seeing THE SHINING at the theater- first run- before scenes (thankfully) became common parodies similarly to The Exorcist. My tactic for not allowing movies to disturb me is to fast forward through ANY scenes that may "bother" me. Although FF just makes this downright comical-
  12. Haha, I'd count that as a "special effect", wonder why they had to shoot the action separately & insert it into the background?
  13. I just remember that fact from when it was posted on this board before. And Godfrey, not only is watching a movie in short increments not the way the filmmakers intended, watching segments of multiple movies concurrently sounds nonsensical to most people. (I almost always watch movies in 2 parts because I fall asleep halfway through and have to rewatch the second half the next night) 😴
  14. He looks like a guy I dated named Dan -he dressed like that too. German Adirondacker. His fave movie genre: Universal Horror, Noir.
  15. Oops, Fudd was voiced by Arthur Q Bryan
  16. I love The Uninvited, especially when I saw it screened in a big old spooky theater. I love the story, the suspense, the acting & especially the ghost. I liked the resolution too. I just listened to an old radio version starring Ray Milland recreating his character last night courtesy of the little known Syracuse University Audio Archive: https://www.npr.org/podcasts/381443756/tuned-to-yesterday (it's not uploaded yet-24 hr delay)
  17. I'm curious to see it once the library gets a copy, I'm never in a hurry to see a new movie. I just hope the update doesn't include visible gore, violence or sex scenes. Amazing craftsmanship that any movie ever succeeded without those^^ elements (plus constant swearing)
  18. I often watch WHAT'S MY LINE too. The entire episodes are good, but the "blindfold" celebrity segments are always a hoot. Too bad the well rehearsed questions quickly narrow the guessing. I remember when it was still on the air too-the contestant's top winnings could amount to $50! I also enjoy old THIS IS YOUR LIFE episodes. Many humble stars are visibly moved by their surprise visitors. Last one I watched was Shirley Jones who instantly reverted to small town PA girl. She had been pulled off the Partridge Family set- it was cute to see Susan Dey's & David Cassidy's reaction, the only two cast members old enough to understand what was happening.
  19. Great movie-even more riveting seen on the big screen with others. I hope that's not you, Gfan, I like your posts here. That baseball cap translates as "not serious".
  20. Great subject! I love Jesse Matthews movies, but she was a British film star and rarely shows on TCM. She was known as England's "Judy Garland" I've seen a lot more Alice Faye musicals at the library than on TCM too.
  21. You don't see the necessity because you are not the one reading it on a message board. I often say: "If you want to be understood, you need to learn good communication skills. If you want to be understood globally, don't use jargon." It's one thing to type your stream of consciousness....another to READ it. The correct response if the OP was as clever. I disagree. Excellence will always be in style. I find those with excellent communication skills succeed more than those who mumble, slur their words, use vernacular-especially when interacting with others globally. Speaking and writing well has greatly helped me in life - given me an extra edge when judged by potential bosses/clients. People who think it's OK to ignore grammar/elocution have made their decisions emotionally and those who put forth the effort have made an intellectual choice. Separates the men & women from the boys & girls, not about age but maturity.
  22. Ok I'll bite...son of Raymond Massey? Gable and Buddy Ebsen only had girls.
  23. All excellent examples. I am a big fan of ham, it's what makes us watch the performance. John Barrymore is my favorite ham followed by Laughton who is "ham with pineapple". Laughton only misses first place because he doesn't possess Barrymore's sexuality. Both hams are great in comedy. Vincent Price is my favorite evil romantic ham with Basil Rathbone a close second. I think their tall good looks help. There are several "overly dramatic" actors/actresses that just miss the HAM mark, like Bette Davis and forgivable because of her age, cloying Shirley Temple And Flynn amazingly straddles the line of a hammy performance by his copious charm
