I don't have my dolls displayed right now, because I'm not sure where to put them where the bird won't damage them.  I hadn't seen them for awhile, I forgot which ones I had! I thought I had the Lucy and Ethel Chocolate Factory set.  Apparently I just thought about getting that set, because I do not have it.

Isn't that it in the center? Or are you saying there's an "Ethel" part to the set-that you don't have.

That's a totally AWESOME book collection, several I'd like to read. I prefer reading library books and giving them back, storage is such an issue.

Many of the oversize picture books I inherited from friend's estates. I've gifted many away, like Westerns.

I don't like dolls very much, but they really captured the spirit of Lucy & the costumes. I'd buy any one of them, but I especially like the Lucy & Desi sets. There's something heartbreakingly Shakesperean about the huge success/huge failure of their lives.

I used to have one of these...until it was STOLEN. My Mutoscope (from Knotts Berry Farm) a big circus poster of a girl & her performing horse and 2 dragon chariot sides were all stolen & sold by my former business partner. Eh, they're only "things" but more importantly, I learned my business partner was a crook!

Don't forget favorite wise-cracker Patsy Kelly was also part of the coven. She was the one who rocked the baby-

I just love the vibrant color palette clothes used to offer. Used to be the only people who dressed in somber colors were law enforcement & mourners.

  4. It's not really a "comic book" thing as much as a devo thing-people who just don't want to grow up. As I said, I enjoyed my youth absurdities as much as anybody, but it someone else's turn.

The only picture I could find...this "athletic" toddler has hair.

    3.jpg

And this giant toddler is the cool stoner version. He's hangin' with friends Darla & Tragedy Ann.

Sorry. Hey people made fun of me & the way I dressed in my 20's & 30's, now it's my turn for that!

Your OP was only part of what Speedy was responding to (the Scorsese bit). She was also responding to the Bill Maher comments, which were brought up again, as well as someone's comments about how people dress/groom themselves.

Ok, ok I'm sorry speedy was insulted about my post raving about grown adults that dress & often act like children. There are always examples of grown adults that behave responsibly but still enjoy comics & super heroes....not at all whom I was referring to....

There is a large segment of 35-45 year olds who have found it acceptable to not become responsible adults and have little ambition to evolve. Mostly, their appearance is due to just being lazy: "it's easier to stay the same than put any effort in my appearance-who cares?"

Unfortunately, PEOPLE CARE what you look like. Your appearance tells others about your level of education, your station in life & your personality. The "comic book guy look" of long shorts/long t-shirt creates a visual proportion of a giant toddler. I'm sorry, but there's nothing flattering about a 50 year old in a Goofy or Pooh t-shirt.

I had pink hair & wore mini skirts for decades & it looked adorable. A mature woman would look silly in crazy colored hair, heavy make up & sexy minis, so I respect others enough to dress appropriately.

(I only mentioned Chuck Taylors because most find out after 40 they don't offer enough support)

  6. Re: Bill Maher above: I was shocked when working retail at how many grown adult customers dress like children. Men had shaved heads, long t-shirts with some cartoon logo (often with holes or worn out) droopy shorts that ended near the knee, & flip flops or Chuck Taylors.

Unfortunately could not find suitable pics, but girls get stuck too-look for the severely pulled back hair & skintight clothing showing every roll & crease along with that tweety tattoo.

    Mentioned in another thread.

My family saw this together at the theater and we thought it was a riot! For decades I'd receive disdain or puzzled response whenever I mentioned it among film fans.

I recorded it from TCM when it premiered a few years ago & brought it to our annual gathering. It was as funny as we all remembered and the first time viewers in the family loved it too. Seems like this film has gained a somewhat cult status.

Maybe that's just the way things are with black comedies.

  8. I am sure everyone sees the similarities between Broderick Crawford & Paul Douglas. Both great tough guys with similar body types, movements, strong blustery voices and even facial similarities. Like Creighton Chaney, you always had the feeling they were pussycats inside.

Despite the solid cast,  the film falls flat for me.

I love CLASH BY NIGHT and enjoy complicated charactors who don't follow the norms. Babs is always a treat when she's nasty. I've shown this to people who have disliked it intensely.

MALES  WHO ARE PRETTY MUCH WORTHLESS (snipped) AND DON'T DO JACK TO HELP WITH DISPENSING THE MONSTER-

Do I sense some hostility towards men here?

Seriously, though.....there is nothing more frustrating than watching a stupid or dull character? It's what makes us spontaneously yell at the screen-one of my favorite "movie house" human nature phenomenons. I think observing someone making a mistake evokes more involvement, possibly why these men are written as weak.

I once saw a preview screening of some forgettable rom-com and when the girl opened the door to see the "bad boy" standing there, a female voice yelled out "A*$ HOLE"...the only laugh the movie got.

  11. Here's the "Hollywood" section of my bookcase:

Horizontal stuff is going to auction. I have an original 1940 FANTASIA promo book sent to theaters from Disney and a huge Judy Garland book on their way out.

The barrister case has my oldest collected books...

Garson Kanin's Hollywood, Serious Business, Wizard of Oz, The Bad & The Beautiful -all excellent books- are all behind the glare.

Trash is an excellent picture book of trashy movie posters & Jean Howard's Hollywood is a beautiful collection of candid photos of movie stars at leisure.

    And here's the overflow.

The "Manhandled" shelf is movie related. Note it's 2 rows deep. This "overflow" has all been amassed in the past decade. Mr Tiki's travel agenda always involves a used bookstore. Powell's in Oregon & McKays in KY are destinations.

Bottom shelf has Schultz portrait of me & my Golden Retriever in snow with black sky. Syracuse, haha.

Jennifer Aniston thinks Marvel is “diminishing” the movie industry

Don't blame Marvel (or Disney) They are just doing whatever makes them the most money.

What saddens me is just the "dumbing down" of our culture. Apparently those who grew up in the instant gratification world of hand held mind meld cannot grasp anything more complicated.

As a teacher, I see it every day. Kids can't keep more than 3 charactors straight when reading a story-unless each character looks different from bold costuming. Heaven help them reading a book without pictures.

This global trend is diminishing the value of the read or spoken word as well as movies. Language used well, communication* is too important to let go. It's at the very core of what makes us human.

I hate cable and if it weren't for the fact that our streaming channels (Netflix, Amazon Prime) are such a pain in the A** (half the time they load, the other half the time the don't) I would be cable cutting.

I don't have Comcast, but Rectrum and streaming only malfunctions when 2 viewers are watching the same channel on different TVs.

It took MrTiki a year to drop his $130/month cable and go to streaming only. You should be able to purchase TCM a la carte just like Netflix. I'd just ask customer service what streaming tier they offer would allow that.

So, I have no television programs to watch.  Any content I want to enjoy will come on my desktop.  (snipped)The thought of saving $125 a month is rather appealing to me.

Agreed. I cut the cord around 6 years ago and mostly got by the same as Eric:

I also get by on "artificial TCM":  I wait to hear what everyone else is watching, and then I go next door to the library and look it up on disk.

So much is available-even more if your li-berry can do "inter-library requests". All of Fox's Alice Faye & Carmen Miranda movies TCM won't show are there, and I'm in a smaller size city.

No need to watch movies/TV on your little computer.

Two years or so ago, my Movie Buddy had me over his house to explain & demonstrate the entire "streaming" thing. If you have a new TV with streaming capability, you simply buy a modem & router as SansFin was describing. One time cost. Then you buy a "server" like Roku, Apple TV or Amazon's Firestick, the 3 most common. One time cost. Then the only cash cow is the internet stream, I pay $15/month.

I then showed MrT how to stream & HE cut the cord last year. He pays for HBO and Netflix but I haven't even begun to exhaust "free". You can drop any "paid" station anytime you want, when you're done binge watching a series.

It's the a la carte system we all were hoping for. I think it helps older people like me to have a friend familiarize you with how the system works.

  15. I finally saw ROCKETMAN '19 yesterday, the biography of Elton John. I didn't have high hopes for it, mostly because I have been following Elton John's career before he ever came to America in 1970. I recall someone here commenting about horribly his Mother was portrayed and was shocked because Reg was a true "mamma's boy". He often included her in his early interviews and I'm very familiar with her appearance, her career, etc. I watched this with MrTiki who only knows Elton's hit songs and the very basics of his life.

ROCKETMAN was one big hot mess for both viewers. The story seems to be flashbacks on his life, as revealed by a crazy costumed Elton in group therapy rehab session. I do like the progression of his "undressing" in each flash forward, as he gets deeper into his personal story until almost "naked" by the end.

Early in Elton's childhood, when everyone realizes he's a musical prodigy, the little boy Elton bursts into song & dance along with every bystander in the neighborhood singing "Booch is Back". Huh? Why a 1975 song in a 1950 setting? Although I like traditional musicals, it was a confusing failure.

One of the most exciting aspects of Elton's career was it's inception and making a huge hit coming to America. I find this period of his life formative and I asked MrTiki if he got ANY SENSE at all, about Elton's feelings-was he scared was he shy was he excited & pumped up? Nope, all the casual viewer got from that sequence was Elton's sexual orientation. Big deal.

I am glad the most important Dick James Office scene with the record rep casually tossing an envelope of Bernie Taupin's lyrics from a stack to Elton was done very well.

Most of this film chronicles events & costumes, not enough of the creative process involved in making music. There are a few scenes of Elton composing & Bernie listening to his lyrics set to music for the first time. That's MAGIC, why not show more of that?

Elton's early British recordings are sweet & immature, and it was disappointing their musical arc wasn't part of this story. The band, which is so important for emotional as well as musical support was never mentioned! Just all of a sudden he's in a recording booth with Kiki Dee.

And every song was set in the wrong time. MrT suggested the songs were chosen because the lyrics "fit" the situation. Huh? Those are someone else's lyrics. If that's the case though, just like other movies that have attempted (Forest Gump, Across The Universe) songs may evoke a remembrance from your life, but it's a lousy way to tell a story.

I will say however, I thought the guy who played Elton was fabulous. And I loved that he did his own singing, it brought sincerity to the character. Elton surely chose him for his fabulous physique! This movie was Elton's project, so this is his personal "view". But both this fan & non fan hated it.

Stands for U People Stink. I've never seen such carelessness with packages in my life. Every package is insured, but they count on no one ever "claiming" since it's nearly impossible to receive reimbursement.

    Ugh. Pseudo-intellectuals are the worst!

Agreed. That said, remember "movie" is a shortened nick name for "moving pictures" a thoroughly charming old fashioned term. Since there is scant film actually used these days, "film" has become an erroneous term, hasn't it?

The way people's faces are planted in their phones, we may as well start calling it the "hand held mind meld" since it's no longer a telephone.
