  1. "This is one of the few instances where I am torn between the original and the remake. But if I had to ultimately choose it would be the Claudette Colbert one."

It is a bit "Sophie Choice, isn't it? Having to choose a favorite child? Both have their merits and weaknesses. I refuse to choose, and am grateful that the DVD includes both versions.

  2. Hmmm, I didn't remember Scarlett being any nicer in the movie. Perhaps we're just "caught by her charms as the Tarleton twins were" when we see the beautiful and vivacious Vivien Leigh in the role... She is certainly more beautiful than Ms. Mitchell envisioned her.

  3. "Maybe if Christina had some talent she wouldn't be so bitter and vengeful."

I don't think she's bitter any more. I went to a screening of Mommie Dearest a few years ago in San Francisco, and she was in attendance (as were all of the actors who played the children in the movie). Unlike the book (or movie), the tales that she told of Joan Crawford were all good and/or poignantly touching.

  4. "Since the leprechaun is fairly obscure, you might do better to concentrate on fur-coated Jean and the Bishop. The latter, by the way, was better known for playing the ukulele."

Now one would think that would have made it much easier. But I can't seem to make Cliff "Ukulele Ike" Edwards, Rudy Vallee nor Tiny Tim fit... "Jean Tiny"? "Vallee Martin"?

Oh, I just noticed that wordmaster did it. I bet he's right. That's great! Thanks, Mr. Master!

  5. "I like the 1936 Showboat a lot. It amazed me that the guy from "A Night at the Opera" could act."

That's Allan Jones, father to 1960's lounge singer Jack Jones. Glad to hear he did a good job in Show Boat. I've never had the opportunity to see this version and look forward to it; especially since I'm an Irene Dunne fan. Would also like to see High Wide and Handsome again -- another Irene Dunne epic musical.

  6. Heck dr., I like the music in all of 'em.

"Fish gotta swim; birds gotta fly; I gotta love one man 'til I die, So I can't help lovin' that man of mine. Now, tell me he's lazy, tell me he's slow, ..."

  7. Rocky, check below my post and you'll see that I was responding to daddysprimadonna who wrote:

"The thread list page in "General Discussions" shows Rocky as the latest poster, but the last post I can see is the one from Mr Larry on the 25th."

I was just trying explain to her how this could happen. I gave no accusations, no thoughts or implications that you did anything wrong -- because you didn't. I've made many a typo on this board, and have often gone back to correct them. Each time it pushes it up to the top. No stones were thrown, and I'm sorry if you took it that way. Sorry for the misunderstanding. As far as I know, we have no disagreements -- Academy Awards included.

  8. Yes, WBHV is releasing "The Paul Newman Collection" on November 14. It will include Harper, The Drowning Pool, The Left-Handed Gun, Mackintosh Man, Pocket Money, Somebody Up There Likes Me and The Young Philadelphians. Harper will also be sold individually. Special features on the Harper DVD will be an audio commentary by screenwriter William Goldman and introduction by our very own TCM host Robert Osborne.

  9. "It's like those Word documents that ask you if you want to save changes when you exit, when all you've done is open them up to view."

Often, the reason for this is because the Word document has field codes in them that were updated when you went in or were about to exit the document. Some documents have dates or time stamps in the footer and it'll update; so when you leave, it wants to know if you want to save the new date/time...

  10. I really don't know very much about the western genre. But Robert Clapsadle made a documentary called The Ride to Wounded Knee that you might find interesting. This fall, production begins on Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee; a mini-series based on Dee Brown's book and starring Aiden Quinn. It should air in 2008.

Did you ever see Smoke Signals? It's a good one from 1998, featuring the very handsome Adam Beach; a movie about Indians living on a reservation today. Great soundtrack too.

  11. "There is another poster here called Jack Burley he is from your area so you will see him around."

But, but, but... Mr. Mania said he lives in Washington state; and I live in San Francisco (though, as a child, I spent a couple of summers in Ellensburg). Same coast, but about 900 miles away...

My Washington movie memories: Seeing Grand Prix in Cinerama in Seattle. What a spectacle to see that brobdingnagian screen and be surrounded by the roar of James Garner's engines. I also saw The Sound of Music in the small town of Ellensburg. I believe it was my sixth time seeing it, and the print was a little tired. It'd probably played many a small town before finally arriving there. Also The Man from Button Willow and Mary Poppins. Most of these movies were released a year or two earlier; I don't know why it took them so long to get to mid-state Washington. These were probably specially priced revivals at the kid's Saturday matinee...

  12. The photo of the grassy-palmed girl was probably taken at Candlestick Park, where the Beatles performed in 1966. The Cow Palace is still a concert (and other events) venue, but it's an indoor arena and there's no lawn. Candlestick, however, is outdoor and features lawn (and I imagine the audience contributed grass).

The Beatles stayed at the Hilton Hotel during their stay and my sister and I went there. Gaggles if giggling girls were everywhere, hoping to catch a glimpse of the mop-haired boys. A large cardboard box was placed on the front desk, and the public could write notes to The Beatles. I was just a tyke, but I remember that I scribbled a gushing note to Paul and placed it in the box. I'm sure he treasures it to this day... ;)

  13. "Does anyone else find that, when clicking on the name in the 'respond to', that this site does NOT bring you to the original message that is being responded to? Is it me, or not?"

This feature still works for me. I clicked on "NZ" on your post, and it took me to his post that you responded to. You might want to bring it up under General Discussion, where the webadministrator tries to solve system problems...

"Edward Scissorhands make me bawl, every time. I LOVE the Seinfeld episode about this movie....ooooh fah."

Seinfeld did an episode about Edward Scissorhands? Please tell us more...

  14. "As much as I love the music, songs, and dances in '7 Brides for 7 Brothers', and altho I know the story about the studio cutting the budget in half, because of 'Brigadoon'..."

I always wondered what Brigadoon would have looked like without the money that was originally intended fro Seven Brides.... It's just that Brigadoon is sorely lacking in visuals as well. Vincent Minnelli campaigned hard to shoot his movie on location in Scotland, but MGM refused and the painted backdrops were created. They're beautiful in their way, and I understand the painted cyclorama was the largest ever created but I'd love to see on screen the vision that Mr. Minnelli originally had for this musical.
