Looks good to me, Mr. master. Would you like propose two names for six (or less) degrees or separation?

Ann Blyth spoke about him the other night at San Francisco's Castro Theatre. She regretted the way the film turned out and wished that Mr. Lanza had completed work on the picture. The recordings that they made for the picture are among her favorite work, but she said he just couldn't handle his fame; it went to his head...

This was voted Oscars for Best Actress (Luise Rainer) and Cinematography (Karl Freund). It's now available on DVD.

It's Bird of Paradise. You can take your pick between 1932 version with Dolores Del Rio and Joel McCrae or the 1951 version with Debra Paget, Louis Jourdan and Jeff Chandler.

I think you're underestimating us non-Germans, CineSage. This American is interested in foreign languages and spellings anyway...

It was my understanding the Mr. Minnelli gave up on Brigadoon when MGM refused to allow him to film it on location. I'd heard he was disgusted with the soundstage scenes with painted cyclorama and had great ideas for filming in Scotland. T'would be great to see what was inside his head...
Thanks for the tip on the book. I'll keep my eye out for it.

'The Black Swan' was recently released on DVD by Fox>The two best things about the DVD are Maureen O' Hara in Technicolor, and her providing the audio commetary.
Thank you for mentioning this! I hadn't planned on attaining this DVD, but with Miss O'Hara's audio commentary -- now I'd say it's must.

Thank you Mr. Mongo! Shall we try:
Leslie Howard ------> Leslie Nielsen

Brava!

That's what I get for speaking for someone else...
I believe it's more subtle than that. Something tells me that seeing The Grapes of Wrath didn't make the original poster happy. Rather, witnessing it taught him/her to count his/her blessings, appreciate what they have, and sympathize with those who have misfortune. At least that's what Tsotsi did for me... It certainly didn't "get rid of my depression", but it diverted its cause to someone else's plight. -
"...as far as I know David Spade doesn't have a brother named Jack."
Thanks Mr. Mongo, I finally got it figured out. There is no personage named Jack Spade; it's merely the name of Kate Spade's men's line.
Gloria DeHaven would be a swell guest for Mr. Osborne. I would love to hear more of her stories. I had no idea she was in Modern Times! Who was she in that wonderful movie?

Ah, there ya go! And it's quicker than my route. Unless someone knows of a faster way, I'd say it's your turn.
Radar Men From the Moon < Clayton Moore > The Lone Ranger
The Lone Ranger < Bonita Granville > Strike It Rich
Strike It Rich < Ellen Corby > Shane
Shane < Ben Johnson > Last Picture Show
Last Picture Show < Jessie Lee Fulton > Paper Moon

I attended this sold-out screening last Friday night. It was great to see Mildred Pierce on the big screen again; like visiting an old friend. Sometimes I think the real joy of this film is watching Eve Arden and Jack Carson. To see them together is luxury!
Ann Blyth was there and she really looked great. She looks better today than... well, maybe than ever before. She was gracious, sassy and sharp as a tack. It was mentioned that Monte's beach house was actually the home of Mildred Pierce director, Michael Curtiz. Can anyone confirm this? This tidbit didn't come from Miss Blyth, but from the interviewer Eddie Muller. She did say that Michael Curtiz would confront Joan Crawford about her costumes. "What about these G*d d*amned should pads?!", he would bellow. She said they'd fight it out, and pointed out that we should notice the pads stayed in the movie.
Miss Blyth told us about being injured on a tobagan ride soon before the Academy Awards presentation when she was nominated for her Mildred Pierce performance. She had to wear a back brace, so the studio designed a gown that would hide the brace. She was touched and very grateful for this. She also talked about Joan Crawford's evening when she was "sick" and didn't attend the Awards ceremony. Miss Crawford won, of course, and Miss Blyth went to her home to congratulate her. She seemed to think it was a very savvy move on the part of Miss Crawford; and it forced everyone -- the press, etc. -- to come to her.
Regarding Eve Arden: well, Miss Blyth loved her. They were friends socially, and she said that Miss Arden was nothing like her screen persona. She was more quiet and reserved; sitting quietly in the corner during parties. She mentioned that Miss Arden was born in Mill Valley (just across the Golden Gate from San Francisco). RIP Eve Arden!

Thanks for the Texas Carnival information. I'll keep an eye out for it!
Last night I attended the screening of Mildred Pierce and Ann Blyth made an appearance. She spoke at length after the screening, and talked about her favorite films including The Great Caruso and Kismet. I alluded below to being disappointed in the screen version of this musical, and the reason became clear from Miss Blyth. She said that there was trouble on the set. Vincent Minnelli began work on the film, but Howard Keel was unhappy with him. Miss Blyth stated the Mr. Keel pronounced if Minnelli showed up for work the following day, then he wouldn't. And sure enough, Minnelli was off the picture. She said they brought in an uncredited Richard Thorpe to complete the picture, and she thought it would have been more successful with Minnelli's vision.

It seems as if we're "yin" and "yang". You see, I wished that I had managed to attend The Unholy Three. I'd seen this years ago, but would have loved to see Lon Chaney on the big screen again. Alas, I had to work; then rushed to the theatre to catch Show People.
How was the print of The Unholy Three? Did they show any extras?
TomasTigre said: "...Also, there is talk of Show People coming to DVD in 2007"
What a great rumor! I hope it's true. For it to be true, I would assume this means that they're restoring the injured frames of the movie. I wonder if they were able to find other prints to use for the scenes that were so sadly damaged on the print that we saw.

"I've wanted to see SHOW PEOPLE for some time now...I wish I lived in San Francisco!"
Thank you sandykaypax for your kind words. The Silent Film Festival takes place every July. Maybe next July it'll be time for a trip to San Francisco for a long weekend? I was at last night's screening of Mildred Pierce with Ann Blyth making a touching appearance. It was announced that amongst the full house (1,400 seat theatre) were fifty people that had flown in from around the country to be there for this special occassion. Perhaps in the future you could come out too.

I think you're missing a step as Ryan O'Neal wasn't in Funny Girl.
Radar Men from the Moon < George Wallace > Forbidden Planet
Forbidden Planet < Anne Francis > Funny Girl
Funny Girl < _________ > Paper Moon

Well, we'll never know for sure until we watch them, right? I admire your bravery and congratulate you on your follow-through. I'll go read the review now... If anyone wants to follow me:

The title of the collection is "Film Noir"-something or other. So running a search for "Film Noir" under "title" should bring it up. Perhaps this is the one you're looking for?

Oh my! I said I was confused; guess I had to prove it.

Allow me to restate that:
I'm still a little confused. I'd always heard that Jack Spade was Kate Spade's brother. But if "Spade" is her married name, then what's her relationship with Jack? Is Jack a brother to Andy and David?

Okay, how about the quickest link between:
Radar Men from the Moon (1952) to Paper Moon (1973)
[i think I've found a way with four movies separating these two...]

Connect Marie Dressler to Dan Rowan (motion pictures only)
Marie Dressler < Dinner at Eight > Grant Mitchell
Grant Mitchell < Arsenic & Old Lace > James Gleason
James Gleason < Once Upon a Horse > Dan Rowen

We await your review, wordmaster; assuming that you watched it today...

"[D]esigner Kate Spade is David's sister-in-law. She is married to his brother Andy."
Thanks! Though I'm still a little confused. I'd always heard that Jack Spade was Kate Spade's sister. But if "Spade" is her married name, then what's her relationship with Jack? Is Jack a brother to Andy and David?
