  1. Happy Thanksgiving, mrsl!

I was thrilled to find this video and then somewhat ambivalent to the different footage used with my favorite movie performance of a Christmas song...and then I thought about the lyrics...

"Here we are as in olden days..." "Through the years we all will be together if the fates allow..."

...and realized-A beautiful voice remains a beautiful voice...and some things never change.

  2. Mrsl, you are wicked! :)

I don't know what you look like...for some reason, when I read your posts I picture Anne Bancroft in "The Turning Point?" Don't ask why-I have very little control over my vivid imagination...

Anyway, I can just see you-dodging a giant, gaudy mobile and singing...

"It's my yard so I will try hard to welcome friends I've yet to know! Oh, I'll plant my own tree. My! Own! Tree! And I...Will!...Make!...It!...Grow!"

Thanks for playing along with me. Laughter is the best medicine.

  3. A consummate visionary and true independent spirit...who did it on his terms. His movies were accurate depictions of Americana and belong in the Smithsonian. I always love the fact that his movies do not have the traditional "beginnings" and "endings." You just sort of wander into and out of his landscape-with the multiple characters and story arcs...

    A sad day for Hollywood.

  4. Don't forget St. Louis-native Vincent Price-a real renaissance man. He was a gourmet chef and wrote quite a few cookbooks. He also had a mail order book company-specializing in suspense/detective. And who can forget his "rap" on Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

Geena Davis is into archery. (Wasn't she on the Olympic team?)

  5. I totally agree with you! "Freaks" is on my top ten list of all time favorites. I've always been fascinated with "very special people" and believe they should be able to act (in films, TV, etc.) without the novelty stigma. I'm glad that Peter Dinklage is so busy...great performance in "The Station Agent." He recently had a recurring role on "Nip/Tuck."

I'm currently obsessed with The Goddess Bunny. (I'd post a video, but I don't know if some people could handle it...)

  6. Funny you should mention "Valley Of The Dolls," Mr. Burley. (One of my fave "guilty pleasures-"had a really groovy "Valley Of The Dolls" Christmas display a couple of years ago...)

Anyway, I was thinking (given the volatile nature of our message boards group) that we could do a great remake! Of course, you would direct, Mr. Burley and pintorini, you must adapt the screenplay. Any ideas on casting?

  7. Famous quotes, anyone...

    "The Troll In The Cotton"

"I'd like to kiss you, but I just washed my troll."

    "Auntie Troll"

"Life's a banquet, and most poor trolls are starving to death!"

    "West Side Troll"

"When you're a troll you're a troll all the way, from your first cigarette to your last dying days..."

    "Planet Of The Trolls"

"Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty troll!"

  8. Great choice! I'm a big Todd Solondz fan and think all his movies are fantastic, but his "squirm factor" seems to increase with each one. I'm always impressed with his casts-always an eclectic mix of unknowns and veterans from TV and films and non-actors-who are always in synch with his taboo subject matter.

I thought Ellen Barkin's performance in "Palindromes" was brilliant.

  9. Me too, Matt and Sandy! The Darlene Love appearance on Letterman is one of fave highlights of the Christmas season. I love that Phil Spector Christmas album (have it on vinyl) and I'll be playing it many times over the next month.

    "Ring-a-ling-a-ling-ah-ding-dong-ding!"

  10. I love movies and reading so I get the best of both worlds with sub-titles...and I do prefer sub-titles over dubbing. The DVD of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" does an excellent job at dubbing dialogue that (perfectly) matches the actor's lips with the literal translation in sub-titles...

  11. "The Bad Seed" and "Psycho" come to mind.

Another movie (one of my all time faves) comes to mind...I don't know that it fits the "alter-ego" category. It's Robert Altman's "Three Women" with Sissy Spacek, Shelley Duvall and Janice Rule. It's a dreamy, spooky character study of three women who (SPOILER ALERT) "merge into one."

  12. "But cha AAH, Blanche, ya AAH in that chair."

I LOVE Peter Lorre's tirade in "The Maltese Falcon," before bursting into tears...

"You...you bungled it. You and your stupid attempt to buy it. Kemedov found out how valuable it was-no wonder we had such an easy time stealing it. You...you imbecile. You stupid fat-head you."
