Since our "find the troll" game has, hopefully, come to an end...I have an idea for a new game. Substitute a word in a movie title with troll. I'll begin...
"Troll Without A Cause" (Rebel)
"Till The Trolls Roll By" (Clouds)
"To Catch A Troll" (Thief)

Do you have a favorite (non-comedic) movie or scene from a (non-comedic) movie that cracks you up? (No fair picking an Ed Wood movie.
)"King Kong"
Some of the scenes in this movie are so "cartoonish" I can't help laughing...My fave is the scene after Kong escapes. Fay Wray and Bruce Cabot are sitting on the bed- in a hotel room- unaware that Kong has climbed up the building and is peeking in the window with those big, "googly" eyes...
"The Exorcist"
When the movie was released I was 13 and too scared to see it-from all the hype. A couple of years later it was playing in a nearby small town theatre. (Re-released?) My best friend and I saw it. He was scared. It seemed almost like a parody to me. (Maybe because of all the parodies on TV and in Mad magazine, etc.) Anyway, I found most of the "demon's" outbursts-as spoken by Mercedes McCambridge-thru Linda Blair-hilarious.
"Mildred Pierce"
Love it when Ann Blyth slaps Joan Crawford!

Rusty,
I've never seen "Maniac." It sounds like my kind of movie...except for the cat thing (which probably wasn't "special effects.") I can't tolerate animal cruelty-even if it's not real. Needless to say, I have problems with many movies-including "Lassie, Come Home," "Equus," "The Horse Whisperer," etc.
I do love those "road show" movies. Kroger Babb used to do that. His movie, "Mom And Dad," was shown in tents around the country as an "educational" movie-because it included a child birth scene! I think they even had people dressed as nurses-passing out literature on VD and other such things...

I was unable to finish "Sergeant York" The colloquialisms and faux Tennessee accents were too annoying...
-
I used to love playing "Tarzan" when I was a kid...I lived in the country and, believe it or not, I had a swinging vine...which I would use to get from one side of the ditch to the other...good times!
I have a myspace page...hardly ever go there. There are also a lot of (real) celebrities with myspace pages too. It's also a good way to reunite with old school chums. The myspace people are pretty swift in cleaning up spam. The thing that sort of disturbs me is most of my "friend requests" are from young girls.

I have SO many faves...
"O Holy Night" (Broadway star Billy Porter did a cover for a Rosie O'Donnell Christmas album a few years back...it's so soulful and heartfelt and always chokes me up.)
"My Favorite Things" (John Coltrane, The Supremes and Barbra Streisand)
"Happy Holidays" (Peggy Lee)
"This Christmas" (Donnie Hathaway)
"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" (JudyGarland)
"Toyland" (Doris Day, Leon Redbone)
"The Christmas Song" (Nat King Cole"
"Christmas Time Is Here" (Vince Guarldi)
"Merry Christmas Darling" (The Carpenters)
"Ave Maria" (Barbra Streisand, Karen Carpenter, Aaron Neville)
Someone stop me...

I was clueless to her dramatic roles too, but I really enjoyed her in "Five Came Back," "Twelve Crowded Hours" and "Two Smart People." (Now that was a Mardi Gras!)
Pintorini, you're so right-Italian movies and Spanish movies always have a lot of subtitles and they're fast and furious!
-
What about "The Vampire Bat" with Lionel Atwill, Fay Wray and Melvyn Douglas and "Falling Down" with Michael Douglas (doing "vigilante" acts I'm sure we've all fantasized doing...)
Another one I'd like to see is "Child Bride" from '38. It's from "exploitation" producer Kroger Babb...about a school teacher (and her DA boyfriend) trying to stop men from marrying underage girls in the Ozarks. It stars (12 year old) Shirley Mills (later seen as Ruthie Joad in "The Grapes Of Wrath")-who does a skinny dipping scene! The cast also includes ("little person") Angelo Rossitto-who's been in everything-from "Freaks" to "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome."
-
Ditto...singing, "Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle All The Way..."
-
I have to pick my (all time) favorite movie-"To Kill A Mockingbird."
It transports me to my youth-growing up in the south. The courthouse looks exactly like the courthouse in Holly Springs, Mississippi-the town that is the county seat for the county I lived in. (Holly Springs is the locale for Robert Altman's "Cookie's Fortune.")
You forget that the movie was filmed on a Universal backlot. The first time I did the Universal tour (in California) I was the most excited to see the "street" where the movie was filmed. (I think they use it for "Desperate Housewives" now.) Oh, I was also excited to see the "Psycho" house.
This movie gives me "chills" throughout...after 50+ viewings...when Jem and Scout find the dolls in the tree, when Jem and Scout (in her ham costume) are attacked walking home from the school (always makes me jump!), when Scout sees Boo standing behind the door in Jem's bedroom...I could go on and on...

I totally agree with you, otterhere. "Brokeback Mountain" is a beautiful movie-on every level...and it is a shame that prejudices still exist. (Which is probably why it lost the Oscar for best picture? Just a guess...)
However, Heath Ledger is from Australia. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
-
And now for something completely different...
"The Brute Man" with Rondo Hatton-which Universal sold (!) to a B-studio
"Chained For Life" with (Siamese twins) Daisy and Violet Hilton (also featured in "Freaks")
And "Bunny O'Hare-" which reunited Bette Davis and Ernest Borgnine...
-
You Tube has tons of cigarette commercials-including the Flintstones' Winston ads...I was at an antique mall recently and saw quite a bit of Joe Camel stuff...couldn't believe what they were asking for it! And that stuff is from the '80's. Wish I'd collected it...
-
I have two VCRs and I use them more than my DVD player. I tape a lot from TV (no DVR or TIVO or whatever...) In a way, I'm glad libraries and video rental places, etc. are getting rid of their VHS tapes...my collection has really grown!
I went to every Hollywood Video in town when they were getting rid of VHS tapes recently...getting titles for as low as $1! I did think it was strange they were keeping some as rentals only (like the third Harry Potter movie, "Dazed And Confused," etc.)? I really need to buy a couple more VCRs, before they get rid of them...I'm also a (vinyl) record collector. Ironically, my DVD player is used mostly to play CDs (since the CD player on my stereo (from the late '80's) doesn't work...
As for plasma TVs, HDTV-don't need it.
And on a different note...
You nailed it, mrsl! We don't need a moderator...we need a mother!
-
I'm quite partial to the "uppity" accents found in movies from '30's/early '40's...especially when they are speaking the dialog written by some of the greats writing for the screen then...Nathaniel West, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, William Faulkner, et al. (William Faulkner died in Wright's Sanatarium in Byhalia, MS-just down the road from my high school!)
I also love the "Glorious Technicolor, breathtaking Cinemascope and Stereophonic sound" of '50's films...
One film comes to mind that does not "look" like a '50's movie...
"The Night Of The Hunter." It has a time-less, other-worldly look thanks to (director) Charles Laughton and (cinematographer) Stanley Cortez.
-
I'm with mrsl...
I don't want to play anymore. In closing...
"It's very provoking," Humpty Dumpty said after a long slence, looking away from Alice as he spoke, "to be called an egg...very."
Later...

I agree with you , mrsl! I buy DVDs from Dollar Tree and 99% of the time the quality is excellent. I did buy a Christmas movie last year ("A Christmas Without Snow") that was, obviously, videotaped from TV and transfered to DVD, but, hey, it was only 99 cents! I also found a great DVD, last year, filled with vintage Christmas shorts and cartoons in pristine condition.

Good afternoon, all...It seems like (almost) everybody had a lousy weekend-from what I've read so far...and I haven't made it past "general discussions!"
Maybe we should all meet for cocktails in Florida. Mr. Burley's in Ft. Lauderdale and I hear he whips up a mean mojita!

I miss daylight savings time too...
Cheers!

"Suzy Snowflake" is on You Tube!
-
She also "replaced" Marlene Dietrich in Josef Von Sternberg's "Crime And Punishment."

Happy Holidays, Susu
Thanks for your Christmas enthusiasm. It's my FAVORITE time of year and I agree with you that TCM should bring out the Christmas movies, cartoons, shorts, etc. for a non-stop run, but can we cut it down to a week. (I don't know about you, but my collection can sustain me until then-beginning (of course) the day after Thanksgiving.)
As for Christmas music-that's all I play from the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas night. (And my car radio stays on the station that does the same.) There's so much(great) Christmas music out there and I only listen to it one month out of the year...I don't why this drives most people crazy.
At my former job, I would always try to engage my co-workers in Christmas-related conversation...most of the time they would look at me as if I belonged to some "cult." As a matter of fact, my partner and I were talking this morning about what our theme will be this year...for our front yard display. Anybody have any suggestions?

What about "All The King's Men."
Willie Stark-"You wanna know what my platform is? Here it is. I'm gonna soak the fat boys and spread it out thin."
And Alexander Payne's "Election" from '99.
Tracy Flick-"Dear Lord Jesus, I do not often speak with you and ask for things, but now I really must insist that you help me win the election tommorrow because I deserve it and Paul Metzler doesn't, as you well know. I realize that it was your divine hand that disqualified Tammy Metzler and now I'm asking that you go that one last mile and make sure to put me in office where I belong so that I may carry out your will on earth as it is in heaven. Amen."
-
What is that all about? Blogs or something? It's back on Movie Database now...
-
And the fabulous Peter Lorre...
Abbott-"Tell her they may soon be leaving us. Leaving us for a long, long journey. How is it that Shakespeare says? 'From which no traveler returns.' Great poet."
