Wendy, Everyone, Part 2 was pretty good, but hey I know that better print material of many of these films exist then what was used. Really looking forward to part 3. I'm not convinced that we are going to see the *Photoplay Productions* version of *THE BIRTH OF A NATION* with John Lanchbery's arrangement of the original 1915 Orchestral score tonight as TCM aired in 2006. I think it's going to be the Kino one instead. Not nearly as good a print quality. That's because so much Kino product has been a part of this festival already. I also wonder if were going to see the Photoplay or Kino version of *IT* next week?. TCM has always aired the Photoplay one with Carl Davis score in the past. Not so sure we will get that this time unfortunately. I hope that we will, but certainly will not count on it happening from the looks of things. I wonder if Stars such as The Talmadge Sisters, Corinne Griffith, and especially of concern Colleen Moore will even get a mention in Chapter 3? I'll bet that they don't. Looks like they will talk about Valentino, Fairbanks, Chaney, Swanson, Harold Lloyd, Clara Bow, Ronald Colman, Keaton, John Gilbert, and maybe Marion Davies? I mean no one was any bigger than the Talmadge's during the first half of the 20's, so how could you not mention them? Why is Colleen Moore always slighted by TCM???

infinite1. The two Stan and Ollie compilations LAUGHING 20's is from 1965, and FUTHUR PERILS was 1967. 4 CLOWNS wasn't released until 1970 or '71.
-
The score heard tonight is an arrangement of the original symphony orchestral score as it was composed for the film in 1927. This is more or less exactly what was heard at METROPOLIS Berlin premier. I think it is spectacular. I always forget the composer. I'm not very good with German names.
-
I felt that the first chapter was quite good and I love the Main-Title theme. Looking forward to Chapter 2 tomorrow.

I thought this compilation was from 1959. My favorite Youngson is probably 1970's FOUR CLOWNS. His final compilation, and maybe the best. Besides WHEN COMEDY WAS KING, TCM has aired THE GOLDEN AGE OF COMEDY a few times, but I would like to see DAYS OF THRILLS and LAUGHTER. and THIRTY YEARS OF FUN. I haven't seen the former since the very early 80's, and have never seen the latter at all. And yes the boys did destroy the wrong house! Whoops!

*The Birth Of A Nation* hasn't aired in about 4 and half years. The Photoplay print TCM ran in 2006 was beautiful. Mastered from the 1921 re-issue, with original tints and tones. By far the best quality print I have ever seen of the film. And this version is not on DVD. I would assume that is what they are airing again. While Griffith gets attacked, consider that the Novel and the Play are probably both far more offensive then the film itself. The fact is most everyone was a borderline racist who came from the south, rather we like it or not. It was in-bred into them. That's how they were taught to be, handed down from generation to generation. I'm not proud of it, but we had plenty of semi-racist's right here in Nebraska as I talked to older folks when I was young some 30 years ago, it was shocking their mindset against Blacks. And yet otherwise these were very good people. The history of the race riots, outright lynching during the 1910's in Omaha is pretty embarrassing if not outright shocking. And the Klan was once very prevalent in this state.. There is a remarkable story about a local contingent being present in Lincoln's Memorial Stadium with it's own section to jeer the Catholic's during Nebraska's once great rivalry with Nortre Dame in Football back in the 20's. Pretty wild sounding stuff, but it happens to be true. -
Lynn, I don't think that this is going to be as good as Thames HOLLYWOOD. I'll be very surprised if it is. Who composed the main-title theme by the way? hlywdkjk, The Harold Lloyd documentary (The Third Genius), that was not made for TCM, but rather for Thames Television in 1988, TCM hasn't run it at all since at least 2003. What's more it's not even clear who currently owns the rights. Just like with HOLLYWOOD, Kevin Brownlow's Photoplay Productions doesn't seem to at the present time. The H L Trust did have them for a little while.

Roberta109, Thanks I know Clara is one of your favorites. Here is another Seasonal still. *Clara Bow with Giddy Jack 'O-"It's Getting Dark!"* .

Wendy, The two gals on the ends here are real Knockouts! Especially, the Blonde. I believe that is Adrienne Dore? No idea who the brunette is. I have this movie. THE WILD PARTY recorded off TCM in 1999, but have not watched it in years. Still Super VHS-ET. I know Clara was supposed to be about 15 lbs overweight or so when it was made. She looks pretty good here though. The third one is rather Homely. Not real sure what she is doing in there with these other beauties??? Here is another All Hallows Eve photo I worked on last year, but must not have ever posted on the forums before? *"Claraween!"*

Lynn, Don't see where it has any bearing on matters. TCM has always run the Murnau Foundation prints of *METROPOLIS* since the previous Kino DVD release back in 2003. However, little else from the Murnau Foundation group, (can't recall their full name), has been shown on TCM. Including as I said, the much improved Ultimate Edition of *NOSFERATU* from late 2007.

Wendy, I'm trying to find the other Halloween Pix. Also have one Mary Pickford with a great big Jack O' Lantern someplace. These are new. *Clara Bow-Gamtacular Show!* *"Clara with Leggy Lightning Muses"-1929*

Wendy, There are at least a couple other Christmas ones that I am looking for that I have only seen in Slide-shows. I have several Halloween pictures of Clara. I don't really recall which ones I have posted before, if any of them?
-
Wendy, Thanks. That is some big book Colleen is reading! The Clara Bow Trick or Treat photo is full of unsightly looking artifacts. I manged to get rid of many of them. Unfortunately, dozens of others are still there.
-
TCM still does not have the latest and easily best restoration of NOSFERATU. The Photoplay Productions version is OK, but there have two more recent and much better restorations. The Photoplay one dates back to 1998. The difference with the 2006 (released in late 2007) Murnau Foundation restoration is gigantic. A much Sharper and cleaner print, with better tint's corrected translations, and a magnificent full orchestral rendition of the original 1922 Hans Erdman Musical score. I never even cared at all for NOSFERATU until I saw the new restoration. It is available on DVD from Kino as the ULTIMATE EDITION two disc set, and Eureka in the UK. I continue to be dumbfounded why TCM hasn't picked up this version yet? I mean if they are not airing i, than who is??? Don't get me wrong, I love Photoplay, but they just do not have the best edition any longer, and haven't for a few years now.

I must say that 2010 has turned out to be a rather remarkable year in Film Preservation. Another stash of forgotten American Silent films has turned on up in Russia. These are being shipped back to the United States. This on top of the large collection of films that the were discovered in Argentina, and New Zealand several months ago. Stay tuned from what I understand, there might be much more yet to come from this Russian archive. http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Movies/10/21/us.russia.found.films/ Here is a list of the 10 films being exported. Some big Stars and Directors are featured. along with additional details on 6 of the titles. No GREED only survives in the 2 and half hour general release version, and the 4 hour reconstruction. Even back in the day, no other version was commercially made available to the public. Outside of preview screenings.
