  1. Ed, Nice to hear that you managed to complete the project. Yikes! More delay's, my refrigerator stopped working tonight! What a disaster!
  2. Ed, Was it Snub Pollard? Did you already send it back to him? What program did you use to dub the music?
  3. Ed, What are you scoring? Not sure if you mentioned what film that Jack sent you? Try the Hot Jazz and Ragtime website. Also look on Youtube. Download the flv files, and convert to MP-3 saving only the audio if a video is posted. To be honest, a fair amount of the music I have used for the three films really came from people's collections such as Scottman, Angie, and of course Jorge. So it is derived from a combination of a variety of different sources. Wendy, Everyone, My thanks to for viewing the footage and voicing your opinions. The early music is pretty crackly sounding. Not much can be done about that. And the editing isn't very good either. I am not very happy with it. Certainly far from seamless. I tried out about three dozen melodies for the main-title theme. Have eventually narrowed them down to maybe a couple pieces. However, neither is exactly what I was looking for, and both are rather scratchy. The Demo disc that Grapevine sent me of the movie is very good quality. It looks virtually identical to the print that TCM has broadcast in the past. Grapevine is free to release this film since despite being a Metro Silent, it is still considered to be a Public-Domain feature. That is, the movie is not tied up in copy-rights to Warner's or any other studio.
  4. Hmm, THE GENERAL with music by the great Scott Joplin selling briskly! Never had seen or even heard of that version before? Is it a good print? Doesn't say if it is Piano, or a small Ragtime band. So many different editions available. One of my favorite Joplin tunes is THE SILVER SWAN. Anyone else know that terrific melody? I recall using it on some old 78's when watching my Super 8 Millimeter Silent Blackhawk Two-Reelers back in the day when I was a kid.
  5. Sorry, I'll see if I can fix it? Try the link now. Should work OK. I don't think I had the complete URL posted before? http://fan.tcm.com/_Conquering-Power-Demo-unreleased/video/1428064/66470.html
  6. midnight08, Thanks much for the encouraging comments. I've compiled scores for about 25 to 30 Silents. I have lost track of just how many. However, this is the first time that I am actually getting paid for doing this! So I feel privileged and honored!
  7. Very excited to say that I am getting the opportunity to compile new musical scores for Rex Ingram's THE CONQUERING POWER (Metro, 1921), with Rudolph Valentino and Alice Terry, as well a few other Silent films for Jack Hardy's Grapevine Video. I am most grateful for this generous chance. These will be released on DVD-R eventually. That is assuming the music is cleared for use, and providing I ever get the projects completed. I have been working on them for some two months now as we speak.I believe the melodies that I chose to be Public-Domain material. Here is a glimpse at a sequence from THE CONQUERING POWER with my scoring selections. Click on the link to view this sample video on TCM Classic Film Union. Please comment on this footage, and the musical accompaniment. Thank you for your input it is most appreciated. http://fan.tcm.com/_Conquering-Power-Demo-unreleased/video/1428064/66470.html

  9. Wendy, Yes, I've seen this before in a less cropped version. I'm really not sure if it's Clara or Marie either. I'll see if I can find the larger copy.
  10. *Marie Prevost-"Really Swinging"* *Phyllis Haver-Slightly Sassy* *Dolores Costello-Soft and Delicate Beauty*
  11. *Clara Bow-"Cat's Meow"* *Clara Bow-"Directors Garb"* *Clara With Buddy Rogers WINGS publicity still-1927*
  12. talkietime, Should mention that the old AMC used to air THE GENERAL with the Robert Israel score. Which is the 1st Alternate track on the current Kino, DVD and Blu-ray release. The default being Carlo Davis. TCM has only run the film first with the Bill Perry Piano score, and for the past several years with the Alloy Orchestra music. I just can't understand why, can't they land Carl Davis????
  13. JonasEB, BROKEN BLOSSOMS was just on yesterday morning for Lillian Gish Birthday. Followed by ORPHANS OF THE STORM. I can't get excited by BLOSSOMS unless they run the Thames Silents version from Photoplay Productions. The music TCM added a few years ago is the absolute worst!
  14. hlywdkjk, I think they have played *GO WEST,* but with the Synthesized music score by Eric Behiem found on the current Kino DVD releaseThe old Image laser-disc had a much better score. . I personally find the film very underrated. It is extremely funny. The Climax will leave you breathless. *THE THREE AGES* has been on TCM at least a couple times in the last 4 years. I remember seeing it. A new Blu-Ray edition is being released next month, paired with *SHERLOCK JUNIOR.* *SEVEN CHANCES* is on DVD from Kino too. Pick up a copy. You will be glad you did. Print is gorgeous for the most part. Except for the badly faded Technicolor in the opening sequence. Pretty good score by Robert Israel. *SEVEN CHANCES* is not Public-Domain, it is owned by the Doris Corporation, and few films owned by them seem to pop up on TCM. For instance we have yet to see any of the Norma or Constance Talmadge features. Though, I hoped they would run the ones with Ronald Colman. The Harry Langdon features Doris has are never shown either.
  15. hlywdkjk , Sorry, but SEVEN CHANCES has never been on TCM. Between 1995 and 2000, maybe 2001, it was on the old AMC (American Movie Classics), more than half a dozen times. I'm pretty certain TCM has yet to pick it up for broadcast though. Hopefully, they will air the new version of SHERLOCK JUNIOR with the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra score, replacing the dismal Club Foot Orchestra music. That definitely needs to go!
  16. Where is Silent Sunday Nights? I don't see anything listed until the last two weeks of the month. The good news being the return of TIDE OF EMPIRE (1929) with Renee Adoree and Tom Keene. Not broadcast in over a decade!
  17. As I have stated many times here, I've never been a big fan of THE GENERAL. In my opinion, it has always been vastly overrated. In all honesty, I can see it appearing very old hat to 1926 audiences. To many old Silent film Stereo-type's that were long Passe' by that time. Not a very funny picture, the drama far outweighs the comedy. Viewers of the day would have expected, nay demanded allot more laughs and were no doubt disappointed. Understand that back in 1978 at age 12, I saw Chaplin's CITY LIGHTS and Lloyd's THE FRESHMAN first in a theater setting. Compared to those two masterpieces of comedy, THE GENERAL fell completely flat for me. I still consider it to be a very poor introduction to the Silent Film genre for the novice. Definitely not the first Silent I would show anyone. It is much to dull and slow moving. Likely to alienate more people than peak their interest. That being said, it makes a huge difference seeing this movie with the spectacular Carl Davis score. Since the Thames Silents-Photoplay Productions version is now on DVD and even Bluray, I just can't understand why TCM is still running with the largely horrid Alloy Orchestra score, and not Carl Davis, or even Robert Israel for that matter? I hoped last night would be the occasion in prime-time. Regretfully, that didn't happen. I sure wish that some critic would select SEVEN CHANCES (1925) if they want to Showcase a Keaton film. Far more entertaining, and 100 times funnier than THE GENERAL. Alas if TCM were to run SEVEN CHANCES, it would be a premier. The one Keaton feature they have never broadcast.

  20. ugaarte, Finally, everything is working properly again! Just kicked in all of a sudden! I don't know how, but it did. Won't complain! decided to revive the old thread never realized that it had been since July that I had posted here!
  21. musicalnovelty, Thanks for all the info! Whoops, I guess if it is THE WHITE SISTER than I should not have Lillian in Pink! Stuff is working again for the first time in 2 weeks, but I don't know how? I am going to dig up and revive the old Hollywood Review of 1929 thread!
  22. Wendy, Thanks. Actually, I am scoring at least three films for Grapevine. Including Rex Ingram's *THE CONQUERING POWER.* with Valentino and Alice Terry. Print looks almost exactly like the TCM one. The other is a Johnny Hines feature called *CONDUCTOR 1492.* I have the prototype's for both of these completed. Just started on the Griffith film. Here is a great studio still I believe for *HIS GLORIOUS NIGHT?*
  23. Wendy, I asked Gen McGillicuddy, if there was a chance they might be running HER WILD OAT, LILAC TIME or any Colleen Moore film at the TCM Classic Film Festival next year. Haven't heard back from her yet. Also inquired concerning the restored THE BIG PARADE, CHILDREN OF DIVORCE and a few others. Did you see the Renee Adoree Slide-Show??? Couple more Gish portraits I might have posted before, though not in this thread. I am working on compiling a score for THE GREATEST QUESTION which will eventually be released by Grapevine. Maybe before the end of the year.
  24. *Colleen Moore and Antonio Moreno-"Getting Lovey-Dovey" from SYNTHETIC SIN (1928)*
  25. Ed, I think it's darker. Probably Red. Not Black. Here is another still you might not have seen. Couldn't tell if this is from THE WHITE SISTER? I don't think so. Don't remember those funny looking pointy things on her habit at all. *Lillian Gish-The Maiden Fair*
