  1. Very tragic tale. But you know I have never been all that impressed with Barbara La Marr's looks. Olive Thomas, Jacqueline Logan, Corinne Griffith, Esther Ralston, Marceline Day, Dolores Costello, very much so. Not Barbara La Marr. In-fact in SOULS FOR SALE I never even notice her. Barely even noticed her in PRISONER OF ZENDA either. Give me Renee Adoree or Colleen Moore any day.

  2. Numerous Silent films made in the Teen's and very early 20's have been restored. Though they are in the Public Domain. Hundreds more though have not been restored.

Sadly, You take a popular Betty Hutton feature like *THE PERILS OF PAULINE (1947),* and I'm amazed that no one has ever restored this. It's in the Public Domain, and I have never seen a really good print of the picture anyplace. Allot of films released by Criterion Collection are PD, but have been restored. Same with Kino, and Image Entertainment. So it just depends I guess? Ryme or reason is sometimes hard to figure.

Certainly a major Silent like *THE BIG PARADE (1925)* would have been out a long time ago. if not still under-copyright to Warner's. But now it's finally coming later this year at long last. On the otherhand, if we use *THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE (1921)* as an example, where has that been in a quality DVD edition? Technically, it is in the Public Doman.

The Copyright extension on Silents made between 1923 and '30 is supposed to expire in the next five years. 2018. But some sources say 2022? So I'm not sure which is correct? Early Talkies-Pre-codes would expire at the same time. Need I remind people that Silents are Pre-code's. The term Pre-code is a misnomer. The studios might let go of these, but I wouldn't count on it. Disney is one of then major problems in getting this stuff declared Public Domain.

  3. Seems to be working better than usual for me? Unfortunately many people seldom update their software programs, and never defragment the system. I defragment an average of 5 or 6 times a week. And repeat several times in a row a single defragment, until all the red is gone. Additionally, I suggest that everyone use C-Cleaner. It's a free program. It generally kicks an average of four to five hundred meg of junk that would otherwise be clogging up your computer after each re-boot. A great software tool. Also update you Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, and Mel-ware programs at least once a week.

  4. There is no Esther Costello. It's Dolores Costello. Check out the three clips I posted from GLORIOUS BETSY on TCM Classic Film Union.

Yes, I know that Joan Crawford starred in a film called THE STORY OF ESTHER COSTELLO in the 1950's. But there was no Silent movie Star named Esther Costello. Dolores sister was Helene Costello who was also a popular leadign lady in the 20's and early 30's.

  5. *THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE.* Yeah, it just ran last month, but I don't care. Prior to that, TCM hadn't aired this movie in years. Three Silent films nominated for, or that won Oscar's that they never ever show. *7TH HEAVEN (1927), UNDERWORLD (1927),* and *THE LAST COMMAND (1928)*. Also what about the 1974 version of *THE GREAT GATSBY?* These are just a few.

  6. Hey Scottman! Yes, we talkied about *WINGS* a fair amount in the Hot Topics forum. I was very pleased that they ran the new restoration. Somewhat unexpected. However, there was no mention of it in Robert Osborne's introduction? The debut should have gotten more build up.

*THE RACKET* also got allot of searches on the TCM Data Base. Hopefully many people ordered the Blu-ray and or DVD of *WINGS*. People were asking where the DVD of *THE RACKET* was at? It would have been nice to have seen *SEVENTH HEAVEN, UNDERWORLD,* and *THE LAST COMMAND* during 31 Days of Oscar as well. Those three never air.

By the way, I have posted allot of new stuff on Youtube and TCM-CFU recently. Including three clips from *GLORIOUS BETSY* with my compiled score, and Now a couple clips from *FINE MANNERS*. Plus you may not have seen the clips I uploaded from *LOVES OF CARMEN, IRENE, NO MAN'S LAW,* and many other films.

Here are the links to the *FINE MANNERS* scenes I just put up. Actually it's about the First 20 minutes of the film, minus the opening credits.

  7. I'm not exactly followiing what your saying, but TCM might be able to get THE WINNING OF BARBARA WORTH now that the Samuel Goldwyn library has been leased to Warner's. For that matter, they might be able to get THE NIGHT OF LOVE. The Other Colman and Banky feature that survives in it's entirety. Though of course it needs a recorded score.

  8. > {quote:title=AndyM108 wrote:}{quote}I've rented Underworld and The Docks of New York from Netflix, and I couldn't agree more about wishing they'd show up on TCM. It's really a shame that TCM seems to feel that its audience just can't handle more than a scattering of subtitled films, both silents and foreign, in its regular schedule. Some people just don't know what they're missing.

Where these both from the Von Sternberg Box set? Do they have THE LAST COMMAND as well? I'm just surprised that they would break up the box and rent these individually.
