Jill, I had a complete article on the making of THE SEVENTH DAY. Unfortunately, unless I saved it someplace on my slave-drive, I don't believe I have it anymore? I will try and see if it's in an old stored E-mail's folder or not? I have had it for right around a year. I will ask Jorge if He can find the article again for me. I don't know where to look in order to locate it. Assuming that it is still On-line someplace? Incidentally, have you ever seen a good copy of THE PATENT LEATHER KID? I guess that the Road show edition was restored a few years back. My copy is a awful bootleg, with someone holding a camcorder at a movie screen, not in the best focus either. The lights are on in the room most of the time! UHG!!!!!

*John Gilbert And Eleanor Boardman From "WIFE OF THE CENTAUR" (1924)* *Ronald Coleman, And Vilma Banky From "THE NIGHT OF LOVE" (1927)* *Delores Del Rio and Edmund Lowe From "THE BAD ONE" (1927)* -
PrinceSaliano, TCM does run at least three Delores Costello Silents. WHEN A MAN LOVES, OLD SAN FRANCISCO, and NOAH'S ARK. All good movies. It would be nice to see a good restoration of THE SEA BEAST (1926). I am not to sure that THE GLORIOUS BETSY (1928) still survives? Hope that it does. I believe that GLAD RAG DOLL is almost certainly lost. How sad, as that was a big hit song. I have the two movies you mentioned on DVD-R. The first looks pretty good. The second needs work. I have never seen a Billie Dove Silent on TCM. They do show some early Alice White and Bebe Daniels Starring talkies now and again. Same with Thelma Todd. No Silents.

I sure hope that TCM will promote THE WHITE SISTER as a premier. It would be wonderful if we could get the brand new David Shepard restoration of THE MARK OF ZORRO, that Flicker Alley has released in the Fairbanks A MODERN MUSKTEER set back in December too? Can't say I am overally enthused with the late airing of THE BIG PARADE, but at least it is being broadcast. Again, I believe the new restoration will debut ion Prime-time once the project is completed for broadcast. OK, Didn't OLD SAN FRANCISCO run on TCM during last years "Race In Hollywood. Asian Images In Film Festival?" I'm pretty sure that it did. Now it is being shown for the second straight year as part of the Spanish one? I personally like this movie very much, and love Delores Costello, however a much better choice in my view for the Spanish festival would be Allan Dwan's TIDE OF THE EMPIRE (1929) with Renee Adoree, And Tom Keene. It has just as much historical context, and the movie hasn't aired in many years on TCM. I would love to see it again. My copy was obtained second hand, and was recorded clear back in 1997 I believe. I am pretty sure that TIDE OF THE EMPIRE hasn't been on at all since at least 2000, or 2001. Probably not since 1999? The guest hoast whoever it is this year, should watch this film and see if it doesn't make sense to at least consider making a change? Especially, given that OLD SAN FRANCISCO was part of last years festival? Who else here would rather see TIDE OF THE EMPIRE, which most of you have likely never seen, instead of OLD SAN FRANCISCO, that many of you have? I might add that TIDE OF THE EMPIRe is a very good movie, and a highly entertaining film, with a terrific Metro-tone score. What's more it has Renee Adoree in a top billed Starring role. One of the few, and probably the last of her career at MGM where she was listed first on the Marquee?

Karin, Here is one of the photos you found from WIFE OF THE CENTAUR that I colorized. John Gilbert, and Eleanor Boardman are magic in BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT. Personally I like both Renee and Eleanor better than I do Garbo. It would be great if the earlier feature were to turn up someplace as well. I uploaded this one clip from the France 3 broadcast, strictly for Valentine's Day. I have no plans to add any more. However, I was surprised to find that other people had already added some short clips from BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT even before I did? Can hardly believe it. This film not on the TCM schedule for May, so it looks like we might have to wait for June or July? Flicker Alley is still planning a Summer DVD release. That's what Jeffrey Mansino of Flicker Alley, told the people in charge of this weeks Annual Kansas Silent Film Festival in Topeka, just a few days ago. We know that Rodney Sauer, and Mont Alto recorded their new score last month. http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/bardelys-the-magnificent http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDGy4WgYPl0 Also tossed in a bonus. It's Ronald Coleman, and Vilma Banky from THE NIGHT OF LOVE (1927). This is not a lost film, but I haven't seen it. I think it is the only other movie besides THE WINNING OF BARBARA WORTH with these two together that survives in-tact? I worked on this Still on Sunday evening.

Wendy, I think you have seen WHAT PRICE GLORY? Haven't you? I believe I sent you a copy last year didn't I? Karin, I uploaded several clips from WPG on GAOH with the Movie-Tone score a couple three weeks ago. Looks like I will have to change my mis-labled photo of Delores and Eddie, from THE LOVES OF CARMEN, to THE BAD ONE? Thanks for the correction. Jill, Thanks much for the clip from THE THREE PASSIONS. It looks like a very interesting movie, and it in great shape. Alice Terry looks just beautiful. I have Henry King's THE SEVENTH DAY, but the titles are still Czech. Do you know what the translations are in English? Here are links to seven clips from the 1993 Photoplay Productions restoration of WINGS, which we have sadly yet to see on TCM. Some of these I might delete and re-post, as they were not encoded with the exact settings I wanted. Sure hope that if Paramount does finally release a special edition DVD of WINGS as puportedly they will be doing soon, that it will have the fabulous Carl Davis score that you hear in these clips? I certainly won't count on it though. http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/wings-1927-opening-sequences http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/wings-1927-the-departure http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/wings-1927-the-giant-gotha http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/wings-1927-giant-gotha-saga http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/wings-1927-in-gay-puree-part-1'>http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/wings-1927-in-gay-puree-part-1'>http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/wings-1927-in-gay-puree-part-1'>http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/wings-1927-in-gay-puree-part-1 http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/wings-1927-in-gay-puree-part http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/wings-1927-in-gay-puree-part-3 I also plan on posting some scenes from the 1998 Photoplay edition of Von Stroheim's THE WEDDING MARCH. Scottman, Hey, I know you for one, would much rather see TIDE OF THE EMPIRE, than OLD SAN FRANCISCO again! Let's put it to the vote! TCM programmer, and guest host for the festival, are you listening??? Might there be any possibility of this being worked out? Sure hope so. It would give you a chance to show something that hasn't aired for a long time, and fits right in with the theme that you are emphasizing perfectly.

Karin, Some really nice stills, and posters. Most of which I do not already have. If any of them. Thank you for your posts. And it seems that we will be seeing THE WHITE SISTER come May after-all? Not sure about BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT? Probably not until the following month? If they were running it in May I'm sure that TCM Programmer would have said something? Wish that they would yank OLD SAN FRANCISCO which was part of last years Race In Hollywood Festival, and replace it with TIDE OF THE EMPIRE. There is still time to try to make this happen. Please let TCM know about it! Among the films you mentioned, I have The MAGICIAN and THE MYSTIC, but have never watched them. HIS HOUR was once lost, but was found at least 13 years ago. Still has only Czech Title-Cards. WIFE OF THE CENTAUR is still lost except for a Fragment discovered recently. SOUL MATES is not ringing any bells at the moment? Von Stroheim's THE MERRY WIDOW has been on TCM several times. HER WILD OAT and ORCHIDS AND ERMINE survive. But I would like to know if there is still a 35 Millimeter print of the latter? SALLY is a question mark? Hope that there is a print out there someplace?

Thanks for posting the clip from THE THREE PASSIONS. Unfortunately, I don't have any version of Real Player installed at the present time. I have actually un-installed it many times in the past. This program wrecked havoc with my system for some reason? I will have to look it up again I guess. In the meantime, here is some footage from something even you might not have seen before? (Though I doubt it). Several clips from the hilarious Silent version of Clarence Brown's KIKI (1926) with Norma Talmadge , and Ronald Coleman, that I posted on GAOH over the weekend. Don't know how long I will be able to leave these up? Regrettably, the stilted movement, and ghosting is a product of the way the videos direct up-load on GAOH. I don't know what to do about this? It is not a reflection of how they actually look at all. http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/kiki-1926-out-of-step http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/kiki-1926-the-break-up http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/kiki-1926-her-night-out http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/kiki-1926-night-into-day http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/kiki-1926-getting-assertive http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/kikistiff-as-a-board-part-1 http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/kiki-1926-stiff-as-a-board

Kate, Holy Toledo! You didn't have to shrink Doug, Mary, and Charlie That much did you? But thanks for doing this, as the thread is a lot easier to follow now. Maybe an increase of 20 percent or so, wouldn't hurt anything. Sorry to be such a pain about this. Hey, send me an E-mail. You to Mike. I still owe you some movies after all the blank media you sent me, which I still haven't opened yet.

Everyone, This was just posted on Larrys 66 Diner this morning. Larry is one of the proprietors of the Annual Kansas Silent Film Festival in Topeka. Which starts on Monday. They will be hosting the U. S. premier of BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT with Rodney Sauer and Mont Alto Orchestra performing their new score live. Also a rare presentation of the Constance Talmadge comedy HER SISTER FROM PARIS (1925) with Ronald Coleman, and much, much more. Sounds like a great event this year. As the May TCM slate has yet to be announced, David Shepard was likewise under the impression that TCM would be airing BARDELYS in May. I guess that we will have to wait tell Monday to find out. But based on TCM programmer's comments yeasterday in another thread that just didn't seem to be the case? Anyway, here is what Larry was able to uncover so far: "Okay, Jeffrey, I forwarded your questions to my good friend and President of the Kansas Silent Film Festival himself, Mr Bill Shaffer. He answered back to me the following: "I'm afraid the first question regarding HER SISTER FROM PARIS being a "pre-DVD presentation" is not true. I do have the DVD on loan from the Douris Corporation and they have been trying to interest a distributor (like Kino) in putting it out as a DVD, but that hasn't happened yet. No promises on that one. The BARDELYS question is correct. I asked Jeffrey Masino at Flicker Alley Films today about it and he said to put "Coming on DVD for Summer 2009" on the Flyer which I am designing for it. I have had no responses from TCM. Although David Shepard told me that he was pretty sure they would be airing it in May, I can't get any confirmation from them." "Bill added that he is really hopeful that the audience response for both films will be excellent, prompting David Shepard to perhaps consider HER SISTER as a possible future Flicker Alley release." Thanks for your inquiries, Jeffrey.

Kate, The photo is wonderful. And I had not seen it before either. However, can you shrink it down a little in size and repost? I do this all the time. As allot of my photos and posters are way to big. If you have "Picture It" installed, it is very simple to do. You shouldn't lose much of the clarity in the process. Jill, Like you, I too was just as concerned that projects such as THE WHITE SISTER, and THE MOCKERY could be the final hold over from the Young Film Composers Competition. However, I have been assured that this is not the case. TCM still intends to keep having more Silent's scored in the future. The cancellation of YFCC was partly due to the writers strike. THE WHITE SISTER was actually going to be the next film in line. Which I predicted in the Fall of 2007. The fact that they still have commissioned a score is commendable. They didn't forget about it completely. James Schafer nice a fine job on BEAU BRUMMEL, and as part of his prize was the chance to score another feature. Why they selected THE MOCKERY I have no idea? If it was to be a Chaney. I would have preferred WHILE THE CITY SLEEPS instead. William Haines SPRING FEVER was a really poor choice last year, and Darrel Raby's score was a real downer, after He had composed a very fine one for THE SHOW the year before. They must have chosen the movie strictly because of Joan Crawford? And like ACROSS TO SINGAPORE it has a fair amount of chemical decomposition. I've been told that Marion Davies THE CARDBOARD LOVER doesn't look fit to score. Simply not the case, as I have seen it, as it's in as good or better shape as the other two titles that I just mentioned. You may not recall, but TCM commissioned a horrid new score for D. W. Griffith's BROKEN BLOSSOMS out of nowhere last year. Remember it aired during the Asian Images festival in May of 2008. That was a TCM exclusive. A beautiful new print, but the music seemed to be some Alloy Orchestra emulators or something? Parish forbid! Why they ever did this I will never know, when they could have scored something new all together, and given us a true premier. Something like Marion's THE FAIR-CO ED, Colleen's HER WILD OAT, or maybe even FORBIDDEN HOURS. Any of these would have worked much better for me. There have been numerous discussions here in the past that Silent Sunday Nights is really Silent Monday Morning's and is on way to late. So that is nothing new. What really irks me is when they push the program back an hour, and a half more out of it's regular timeslot. And that seems to be happing more often. There is plenty to gripe about. But as Kate says, TCM has created many a Silent film fan over the years, and will continue to do so. I just wish that more of the films were marketed commercially to the public. And some of the rarer titles were dusted of now and than and given an occassional showcase.

Jill, Well here is the thing, Mr. Tabesh had planned to premier the not so newly (anymore) restored THE BIG PARADE in Prime-Time once it was ready. He didn't want to take anything away from this event. The fact that He has since backed down from this position clearly seems to imply that He isn't expecting it to pop up for awhile? When I talked with Robert Israel, He was somewhat optimistic that they might be recording He and his Orchestra performing the original William Axt-David Mendoza score in the not to distant future. That was back in October. I have spoken with him a few more times since, and no new details have emerged. Haven't heard from him since before Christmas. So nothing new appears to be happening. And this is presuming the original score gets a fresh recording and is used at all? The sad thing is Eastman House restored both the 1925 version, and the 1931 re-issue of the film in 2004-2005. We still haven't seen either one. And those restorations didn't happen over night. Kevin Brownlow unexpectedly found the long lost camera negatives at Eastman-House clear back in 1997! They did not re-master the Thames Silents version that we know and love to my knowledge. This is a concern as I mentioned earlier. That's why the Axt-Mendoza score is crucial, because Carl Davis used several of the same themes when preparing his score in 1983. Including the vaunted "Romance Theme".

Need a walk down memory lane? Try You Tube!!!!
gagman66 replied to georgiegirl's topic in Information, Please!
"Hey There Georgie Girl", Err, You mean TCM correct?, TMC is The Movie Channel. Which is a ridiculous name as all they show is recent crap on there. I like youtube, but I am annoyed by all the rudeness and profanity on there. That type of thing is not for a public forum in my mind, and I highly resent it. -
georgiegirl, Whoops, I forgot TWO ARABIAN KNIGHTS! Also any and all of the Ginger Rogers, and Fred Astaire features. Or most anything with Ginger. Love it! Also love many Doris day films besides the afore-mentioned. Including ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS, ON MOONLIGHT BAY, and BY THE LIGHT OF THE SILVERY MOON. Along with numerous others. A really odd choice and I haven't seen it in years, and years but WHO IS KILLING THE GREAT CHEF'S OF EUROPE (1978). Is this on DVD? And I just can't leave out DOC SAVAGE THE MAN OF BRONZE (1975).
-
Jill, Well, as Mr. Tabesh explained, they have a limited number of movies to chose from in any given year under the present system. Plus they are bound to their lease agreements of so many showings of particular films. Among the pre-codes, when TCM aired Frank Borzage's NO GREATER GLORY last month, it had been in the planning stage for a long time. I knew about it last July, and TCM paid for the fresh new digital transfer themselves. Same with Mary Pickford's SECRETS which debuted recently and looked terrific. It was a wonderful thing to see such clean crisp transfers of those films.
-
Jill, Please note, I have asked about THE VIKING, and TIDE OF THE EMPIRE among others, many times. I just keep being told that these films have not yet been made available in the broadcast format that they now use on the channel. It's the same with the 1930 version of GOOD NEWS, and so on. Believe me, I would love to see THE VIKING run. My recording is from 1997, and was obtained second hand. I didn't have TCM until May of 1999. Say what do you know, TELL IT TO THE MARINES is running in April for the first time since probably 2005!
-
Jill, How's that? There is no contradiction of any kind that I can see? I said that it doesn't look like we will see THE WHITE SISTER in the month of May. Which I was anticipating, as were others here. However, we know that it is indeed forth-coming sometime in 2009, maybe by June or July from earlier threads that have been running since last December. The same with Chaney's THE MOCKERY going back to October or November of 2008. I just assumed that you had read those threads. Apparently not. In any event, I was addressing allot of people here.
-
Film_Fatale, At least this is a positive step in the right direction. As consolation. They will be running the only version that I know, and the one that I revere so much. For that matter this is the only version most people have ever seen. And if you didn't have TCM in 2004, it's likely new to them? It's just that every single time I see the TCM Movie Catalogue promo, especially the brand new one for 2009 that's been running, I just have to shake my head! THE BIG PARADE is the greatest film not on DVD, and puts 75 to 80% of what is on DVD to complete shame! Again, it's not about DVD's though, it's about getting the film back on TCM again. And I'm thankful that this at least has at long last been done now. When I talked with Robert Israel He was somewhat optimistic that they might be recording He and his Orchestra performing the original Axt-Mendoza score in the not to distant future. That was back in October. I have spoken with him a few more times since, and no new details have emerged. Haven't heard from him since before Christmas. So nothing new is happening.
-
Jill, With respect, it is NO reflection on TCM at all. Warner's are the ones dragging their feet on THE BIG PARADE project. For all I know this is the first time the Thames version has been ready for them to air either, since switching over to the new digital server? I'm not sure when this took place? Don't forget that we will be getting premier's of both THE WHITE SISTER and THE MOCKERY sometime later this year. Although THE MOCKERY isn't very good, was not the best choice, and I have already seen THE WHITE SISTER. I assume BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT, and MONTE CRISTO will both be shown eventually. What's more they are running the brand new restoration of THE MARK OF ZORRO in May. So that is at least something. Hey Victor Seastrom's THE PHANTOM CHARIOT is on in April too! That's definitely a TCM premier. Not even on DVD in America. Almost forgot, TCM is running NOSFERATU next month I believe, but I doubt that it will be the new Murna-Foundation restoration? Probably still the Photoplay version as they have a deal with Photoplay. The most disappointing thing was the lack of Premier's of the Photoplay Productions restoration of WINGS for Oscar month, and certainly SEVENTH HEAVEN and STREET ANGEL now that they are both out on DVD from Fox. in the Murna-Borzage set. Nevertheless, Please give Chuck Tabesh some credit. Afterall, He managed to sign a deal with Photoplay Productions, and they did debut the Kevin Brownlow Restorations of both ORPHANS OF THE STORM, and THE GODLESS GIRL at the end of last year. They also ran a brand new NTSC broadcast master of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in November. Not the older Ghosty one they used to show. In addition, the deal with Photoplay means possible airings in the future of the Thames versions of INTOLERANCE,l THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, and THE EAGLE, among others. TCM also premiered Chaney's THE BLACKBIRD last October. That at least partly due to my efforts. I wondered last July why this version with the Robert Israel score, produced back in 2005 had never been run in the States before? After several conversations with Mr. Tabesh, He was able to get the movie on the schedule. So he deserves your praise. I also learned that Marion Davies THE FAIR-CO ED, and Colleen Moore's HER WILD OAT were both very much on the radar. So that was very nice to know, given that those two features were recently restored.
-
texanna, Everyone, If indeed TCM is running THE BIG PARADE in May, (I assume for Memorial Day again like in 2004?) This pretty much tells me that Mr. Tabesh is not expecting to see the newer version ready to go for the forseeable future in broadcast format? That is what He had been long been holding out for. Although I certainly hope that I am wrong about this matter? Can't imagine that I am. In all candor, the film should have been ready a long time ago, but this just hasn't happened. I don't know when or if, we will ever get to see the restored print on Television let alone DVD? Which is so dis-heartening. On the plus side, it is a positive development just to have the movie back on the schedule period. Hopefully, this will at least be a fresh broadcast master of the 1983 Thames Silents edition from Kevin Brownlow's Photoplay Productions? That would be great if it were. As there is bound to be some improvement on what was a relatively soft-transfer made at the time, when aired. TCM ran brand new NTSC-Region 1 Broadcast masters of both the Photoplay versions of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and ORPHANS OF THE STORM in November which was wonderful. Also De Mille's THE GODLESS GIRL. So why not the same with THE BIG PARADE? The potential issue being that the film is owned by Warner's and is not Public Domain as the two other Photoplay titles I mentioned were. But I don't see really what difference that should make? Photoplay actually rents the Carl Davis scored version of THE BIG PARADE in 35 Millimeter. Sso they have to have Warner's consent in order to do so. Should be no different with TV broadcasts? I mean, who is providing the broadcast version to TCM, Warner's or Photoplay? Anyway, to many copyrights, and to much red-tape if you ask me! Besides the lack of the recorded score, another problem with the new master is it was restored by Eastman House in 2003-2004 not by Warner's. They did fund the project. That might be holding things up a bit too? I don't know?
