Everyone, Some good news, and some not so good. It seems unlikely that we will be getting TCM debut's of BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT, or THE WHITE SISTER, or even Chaney's THE MOCKERY come May? I'm pretty sure that BARDELYS will be shown on TCM prior to the Flicker Alley DVD release, so that pushes it back to at least June. This was just posted by TCM Prorgamer (Chuck Tabesh) an hour or so ago. Sounds like they are running finally THE BIG PARADE again for the first time in 5 years, but it is NOT the brand new 2004 restoration everyone has been waiting to see for years! That pretty much tell's me that He is not expecting to see the new version ready to go for the forseeable future in broadcast format. As that is what He had been long holding out for. Hugely disappointing. On the other hand many people have never seen any version of THE BIG PARADE, and it's great to have it back on the schedule period. Hopefully, this will at least be a fresh broadcast master of the 1983 Thames Silents edition from Kevin Brownlow's Photoplay Productions? That would be great if it were. When they showed the Photoplay editions of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and ORPHANS OF THE STORM back in November, both were brand new NTSC broadcast masters that had not been run before in this country, even though only ORPHANS was a TCM premier in the Sates. Replacing the much older Killiam Shows version which TCM used to run.

tcmprogrammr, Well, at least you are finally running the film again. Thank you. Any update on when the new version might finally see the light of day??? How about some of these other movies? THE WHITE SISTER (1923), BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT (1926), THE MOCKERY (1927), Etc. All ongoing projects that we have read about several times on these boards over the past few months. Did you manage to get INCENDIARY BLONDE, or any other rare Betty Hutton features? Really appreciated the premier of Frank Borzage's NO GREATER GLORY last month. A gorgeous print too. It's also great that you picked up Victor Seastrom's THE PHANTOM CHARIOT and will be running it soon. Thanks for any news.

Angie, Jill, There have been rumors for awhile now that all the Von Sternberg Paramount Silent's including CHILDREN OF DIVORCE where He replaced Frank Lloyd to complete the film, would be getting an official DVD release from Criterion. So that would mean UNDERWORLD. THE DOCKS OF NEW YORK, and THE LAST COMMAND as the others. Sure hope it comes to pass. We do know that all four films and SALVATION HUNTERS have been touring in restored 35 Millimeter prints. So that certainly gives us hope. But personally I am getting tired of waiting for these. So much crap is shoveled out by the Major DVD companies on a weekly basis it's pathetic. We also know that Paramount is at last preparing a digital Hi-Def transfer of WINGS, presumably for DVD release, or at least to be shown on TCM. However, rather this will have the Carl Davis score or not, or have any association with Kevin Brownlow or Photoplay Productions restoration is purely conjecture. I definitely wouldn't count on it. Same thing with Warner's where Carl Davis score figures to be replaced on THE BIG PARADE, unless they include the Thames Silents version as well, re-mastered. Which I prayer that they will. THE BIG PARADE could finally be out this year, and Warner's should make every effort to make sure of it, on MGM's 85th Anniversary. Again the lack of a DVD release doesn't bother me nearly as much as the fact that this movie hasn't aired in any form on the American TCM in going on 5 years this May! That's just way to long and frankly inexcusable!

MrJacobsen, Wow, what a terrific article! How do I save this? Thanks much! Harold is my great Idol and personal hero, being from Nebraska.

tcmprogrammr, Thanks so much sir. I sure hope "the one movie" is among the handful of titles that I have been waiting so long for? And if so, that it gets confirmed! Rest assured, we always appreciate all your efforts. Keep up the good work!

Birthday Girl Dorothy Janis. 99 just yesterday. One of the last remaing Silent Screen Stars still living today. Certainly she was among the most beautiful of them all in her prime. No question. Here in these stills from THE PAGAN (1929).

That is probably true. Yet at the same time pretty much all my favorite Stars are American. Not from other countries. I like Edith Jehanne, Emil Janning's, Brigitte Helm, Ivor Norvello, and a few others, Mostly it's Hollywood names. I know them better. I can't name allot of European Stars. And yeah, Clara Bow should have been cast in better films. Have you ever seen CHILDREN OF DIVORCE? It's had some recent screenings. The print restored in 2001 by the LOC. Would do anything to purloin a copy. And I still love Constance Talmadge, Colleen Moore, Marie Presvost, and Marion Davies screwball type comedies. Not the Artsy stuff of the European's, but highly entertaining and fun viewing fair. To be honest, if it's to Artsy like LA ROUE, than that is just not my Cup of Tea. Though I recognize the greatness of Abel Gance NAPOLEON, LA ROUE was just to painful, and morbid to watch. Even with Robert Israel's superb score.

Jill, Well, I have a whole bushel basket full of rare European Silents. Most are very good quality, but the majority I haven't watched yet.

Jill, Yes I know. Kind of sad that she left the busy so quickly though. Is THE PAGAN the only one of Her four films to survive? She sure was some kind of beautiful creature! Mr. King was one lucky Son of Gun! No doubt about that!

Jill, BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT is very good . You should really enjoy it. However, I still prefer THE COSSACKS. This actually was the David Shepard Film Preservation Associates, and Lobster's restoration that aired back in November on France 3. And the Antonio Coppolla score was quite good. To bad it can't be included as an alternate track on the Flicker Alley release. You wouldn't by any chance have seen HIS HOUR? Have you got any rare Talmadge sisters films? Especially, HER NIGHT OF ROMANCE (1924) with Ronald Coleman? I have a pre-completed restoration demo of KIKI, but not HER SISTER FROM PARIS. The showing at the Kansas film festival purports to be a pre-DVD presentation? So Is someone releasing these titles in the near future? Hope so. KIKI, and HER SISTER FROM PARIS were both restored about the same time in 2004-2005. Does your copy of MAN, WOMAN & SIN have that persistent Flicker? And it keeps going from bright to dark, almost like a copy-guarded tape, without overriding the Micro-vision? I am trying to find a better recording, but this one is already much improved from what I had before as it is. As I'm sure you know Jeanne Eagles got Axed before the filming was completed, and the rushed second half of the film was compiled together by Monta Bell from outtakes. Sad, as I really liked the movie, and would have like to seen how the full production turned out. Kevin Brownlow is a big fan of this picture as well.

Certainly among the most gorgeous ladies I ever saw Number 3 on my list of Top 10 Silent Screen Lovies! I think? 2 or 3 I will need to check my list. Anyway, I'll concur a very Happy Birthday!!!

Jill, Just thought I would ask, Have you been able to obtain copies of any of these rare Renee Adoree features that I am looking for? I would be very interested in any of these if you have. MAN AND MAID (1925) AN EXCHANGE OF WIVES (1925) THE FLAMING FOREST (1926) THE EXQUISITE SINNER (1926) Incidentally, is this still lost or has it been found? Do you know? Silent Era.com claims that Warner's has a print, but Richard May who no longer works there doesn't believe that they do? FORBIDDEN HOURS (1928) Note: This is NOT a lost film. I have TIDE OF THE EMPIRE. You were able to obtain THE COSSACKS, and so was I eventually. Not from you obviously. This took me a couple years. Have not seen your version. But mine comes from France 3 back in 2001. And my copy of BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT came from France 3 in November. It has a very nice Piano score by Antonio Coppolla. I am still looking forward to the Mont Alto Orchestra score for BARDELYS, but I have no idea why Kino would want them to replace the Timothy Brock music to FAUST. It couldn't have been any better in my own estimation. Now I wish that David Shepard and Lobster would restore King Vidor's HIS HOUR (1924). Would have been the perfect companion for BARDELYS when the Flicker Alley DVD set is released later this year. Haven't seen MONTE CRISTO, but it was not Directed by King Vidor, and seems rather an odd choice. I'd definitely pay for a collection featuring all three. I have MAN WOMAN & SIN, but I'm always looking for better copies. TWELVE MILES OUT is another John Gilbert feature that I have yet to see anyplace. Also very interested in King Vidor's PROUD FLESH with Eleanor Boardman, have you seen it? I haven't, but I have seen WINE OF YOUTH, and it's great. Of course always on the lookout for THE FIRE BRIGADE. I recently obtained pretty good recordings of TILLIE THE TOILER, and ANNIE LAURIE. The latter is a wonderful film. Wish that Warner's would score this one. Though at the top of my wish list is Colleen Moore's HER WILD OAT. Completely frustrated that the new restoration of THE BIG PARADE still hasn't premiered on TCM, let alone been released on DVD. I was told last July that it would definitely be forth-coming this year. And who would ever have expected that BARDELYS, a film lost for over 40 years, would be the first King Vidor Silent ever to make it to official DVD? Ahead of THE BIG PARADE? That's just plain unbelievable! Where the devil is the stunning new fine grain that Jack bragged and bragged about having seen twice at live screenings back in 2005???

Jill, No luck thus far. So Is this another of your extensive personal restorations? Where did you find the sorce material? I have lot's of rare stuff, including the surviving footage from Victor Seastrom's CONFESSIONS OF A QUEEN with Alice Terry, Lois Stone, and John Bowers. To bad the rest of the film is lost, because what survives is very interesting viewing. Sad to say, that I have never seen a copy of THE THREE PASSIONS in any form. At least not so far. I am working on obtaining copies of LONESOME, and DRUMS OF LOVE. I've had a copy of LONESOME, from Italian TV for sometime, but the music track is missing, and the titles are not in English. Plus the first reel or so seems to be missing. Ed, recently acquiered a copy with a good score, and English titles, or at least translations. The print of THE SHAKEDOWN is beautiful and has it's vintage score. However, the titles are in Italian. Here is a beautiful painted lobby-card for LUCKY STAR. As far as I know these are the original colors: Incidentally, were you as mortified over the score that FOX saddled this movie with in the Murna-Borzage set as I was? Just awful!! Christopher Caliendo seems to be very hit or mis as a composer. This was definitely the latter! Here are a couple colorized stills of Delores Costello from NOAH'S ARK. As these photos were done several days apart, I can see were there are portions of the costume in the first photo that do not match. I will need to fix this.

> {quote:title=goldensilents wrote:}{quote} > Does anyone have a poster image or vintage stills for The Three Passions (1928)? Rex Ingram, Alice Terry silent film? > > Thanks! Jill, I will delve through the hundreds of Posters, and Lobby-Cards I have on my slave-drive and see if there is any in there for this picture? The title does not ring a bell at the moment, but there is gobs of rare stuff in there. I'll see what I can do. Meanwhile, here is a photo I just worked on recently that I'm sure you will like. *Ronald Coleman And Vilma Banky From TWO LOVERS (1928)*

musicalnovelty, Thanks much for the offer. Yes, I am very interested in good recordings of "OH HAROLD", both instrumental, and lyrical versions. All I have ever heard was some piano and Wurlitzer versions in the past. I have a good recording of FRESHIE by Fred Warning's Pennsylvanians, and a pretty nice one of SPEEDY BOY too. I believe by Ben Bernie? But if you have others renditions, that would be great too. Would love to hear them. The ones I have are posted among my playlist on GAOH. Here is the link to my page there: http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/profile/TheGiant By the way, you wouldn't happen to have recordings of the GRANDMAS BOY, GIRL SHY, and FOR HEAVENS SAKE tunes would you? All three films had a melody, and a song that tied to their release. I have plenty of stuff we can trade for. Send me a PM. I will give you my E-mail address. and we will work something out right away. Again thank you.
