OK, so how do I vote? I have never done this before. Patful, you have definitely got my vote! A couple of notes. Some really great picks by everyone, but it's Patful hands down. I have to vote for anyone who includes THE BIG PARADE! Note, the new restoration completed in 2004, is about 15 to 20 minutes longer, and would be a TCM premier. Also it's wonderful that you selected SEVENTH HEAVEN which should have debuted this month. Don't forget STREET ANGEL either. Izcutter, if you want anotherAllan Dwan picture that hasn't aired in ages how about TIDE OF THE EMPIRE (1929) with Renee Adoree, and Tom Keene? THE IRON MASK is a good choice too. It has been shown on TCM, but never with the Carl Davis score! Also how about tossing into your Douglas Fairbanks Junior tribute a TCM premier of Henry King's STELLA DALLAS (1925), also with Belle Bennett, Ronald Coleman, and Lois Moran? That would be something. Pancakes Barbara, You gotta have some Evelyn Brent Silents. So how about Premier's of Josef'Von Sternberg's UNDERWORLD (1927), and THE LAST COMMAND (1928)? We can only dream. But the films are touring in beautifully restored 35 millimeter prints. Norma Desmond: I loved the suggestion of the Marion Davies debut of WHEN KNIGHTHOOD WAS IN FLOWER (1922). However, Warner's doesn't own this one, and probably don't even have a print. Here are three better possibilities for Marion Davies premiers all MGM Silents. TILLIE THE TOILER (1926), THE FAIR CO-ED (1927), THE CARDBOARD LOVER (1928). Although THE EAGLE has been shown on TCM, the beautifully restored Thames version with Carl Davis score has not been. Since TCM recently inked a pact with Photoplay Productions, this is now a very real possibility, and would be another TCM premier. Put it on in Prime-time! In another note, REDEMPTION has been a TCM before, but I have never seen it. My recording was obtained second hand, and was shown on TNT well over a decade ago. If you want a true Premier, how about you change that to FORBIDDEN HOURS (1928) with Ramon Novarro, and Renee Adoree instead? Or if you still want both Renee and Eleanor Boardman together, how about you make it AN EXCHANGE OF WIVES (1925)? Just a suggestion. Or if you want more John Gilbert, consider a premier of TWELVE MILES OUT (1927) with Joan Crawford and Ernest Torrence.

Lynn, I got the E-mail and responded. Sorry for the Double-Grumble! Was hoping for TCM premier's of SEVENTH HEAVEN, and STREET ANGEL this month, or at least the Photoplay restoration of WINGS but it didn't happen. -

Izcutter, Hey Lynn, Please note, I am S-T-I-L-L waiting to hear back from you? Emphasis on S-T-I-L-L. Just like the long awaited and vastly overdue debut of the new restoration of THE BIG PARADE on TCM, I am starting to think that it will never happen. This Cat and Mouse has been going on for well over 2 years now. Much the same with Karin, but it has only been a little over one year for her. Losing patience. (Grumble, Grumble!) -
Ed, I have a copy of BROADWAY. However, it is Pal format and a relatively poor transfer from VHS. The color footage is there though.
-
musicalnovelty, Yes it is the original vintage scoring track to THE SHAKEDOWN. I'm sure of it. I don't know why I thought it was Columbia? I have posted the posters and lobby-cards for both films here in the past. I will need to search through Photobucket in order to find them again. Wait here is the one for LONESOME. Actually, I just found them both! Have SHOW FOLKS here somplace too, and THE LOVE THRILL as well. I'll keep looking.
-
Karin, I can think of at least one more Silent with an amusement park. Probably CONEY ISLAND? That would be KING OF MAIN STREET (Paramount, 1925) with Adolphe Menjo, and Bessie Love. And the Two-Strip Technicolor footage survives! Would love to see it! I have the movie in Black and White. A decent print, but not great. Love is extremely beautiful in this picture.

musicalnovelty, Fascinating post. My only copy of this so far comes from Italian Television. It has no score, and the titles are not translated in any way. Hope to get a better copy from Ed. Haven't really watched this one yet. Have you seen William Wyler's SHAKEDOWN (Columbia, 1929) which Stars Barbara Kent and James Murray? I got this from Italian TV too. Though it does have a vintage track. I agree about Barbara. Personally, I liked her better in FLESH AND DEVIL than I did Garbo. A darling little thing. Have a couple good posters in here somplace. I will try to find them.

Hopefully, we will get TCM premier's of both Henry King's THE WHITE SISTER (1923) with Lillian Gish, and Ronald Coleman, and King Vidor's BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT (1926) with John Gilbert, and Eleanor Boardman. Dare we hope the new restoration of THE BIG PARADE as well? In May it will mark 5 years since the last time any version ran on the American TCM. *John Gilbert And Eleanor Boardman from BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT* Another film that I was promised last year, would be forth coming in 2009, is the Betty Hutton Musical INCENDIARY BLONDE (Paramount, 1945). Probably not seen on Televison anywhere in well over 25 years!

Wendy, I still have not recieved anything? I will send you an E-mail in a little bit.

Johanna, Some great stills from THE MAN WHO LAUGHS! Wendy, Thanks. These kind of tied in with some older photos that I had posted of A WOMAN OF AFFAIRS. incidentally, i am still waiting to hear back from you after last week? Here are three very rare posters for THE COSSACKS that Jorge just found a few hours ago. Had never seen them before until just now! Jorge can find virtually anything!!!:

Kate, Well, the France 3 Broadcast was clear back in 2001. That's quite awhile ago already. This movie isn't likely to pop up on TCM, let alone DVD anytime soon. Though I would like to be proven wrong. I rather doubt if it's even on the short list of MGM Silent's being considered by Warner's for Premier's? In-fact, I would be very surprised if it were. I wish that I knew what were though? Really no way of knowing. I figure that TWELVE MILES OUT has a good chance, because of Joan Crawford. And it's a Gilbert feature that I have not seen. Would love it if FORBIDDEN HOURS were in there. Or maybe MAN AND MAID, or AN EXCHANGE OF WIVES, or even THE FLAMING FOREST? Yeah, all of those with Renee! But it is probably just wishful thinking on my part? Sure I like THE WHITE SISTER, but not nearly as well as THE COSSACKS. Although many Lilllian Gish or Ronald Coleman fans may disagree? We could get both THE WHITE SISTER, and BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT in May! Here are a couple of vintage posters Jorge just found: PS. Good Lord, the guitar is bigger than Renee!

Film_Fatale, TCMprogrammer, I'll second that! And thanks much for scheduling this wonderful film!

ugaarte, Hey, good to see you back here again. Thanks for the compliments as always. I skipped a fair amount of THE COSSACKS in between, and the last 35 minutes or so, none of that was posted at all. It was never my intention to post the full film. This is a really a great feature and deserves some serious attention from Warner's and TCM. I mean the France 3 broadcast was in 2001! That is a long time ago already, and yet to be aired on TCM. To be honest, I am not real happy with the way the videos looks once uploaded on GAOH. They move to slow, and there is a bad ghosting effect. The actual source material isn't like that. Which clips did not play? I will check the URL's. OK, I just revised the links to where they all lead to GAOH. So they should be OK now? Let me know if you are still having trouble? I really wish that TCM would show this movie. Personally, I think it is John Gilbert's best feature other than THE BIG PARADE. At least among the films that I have seen, which is most of them that survive. Plus Renee Adoree is just fantastic. Ernest Torrence is great as Ivan the leader of tribe. You have Nils Asther. THE COSSACKS should be much better remembered, because if it were more widely seen it's reputation would definitely be on the rise among MGM Silents. Incidentally, Did you look at the other videos that I posted there? You will find some real surprises among them if you do. Can't elaborate here. I removed one of the Janet Gaynor picks, because it is much to large, and needs to be resized. I had a few more Corinne Griffith photos, but either I didn't post them, are they are someplace else on this forum? They started a Colleen Moore group on VLN. So please join up as we could use more members. A couple already dropped out. There is a Marion Davies group, Pickford group, Garbo, Gilbert, Harold Lloyd, Clara Bow, Flapper Beauties, All kinds of them. Hoping for a TCM premier of BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT when the May schedule is released. Maybe THE WHITE SISTER too? BARDELYS is being shown at the Annual Kansas Silent Film Festival in a couple weeks or so. They will also be screening the newly restored Constance Talmadge Comedy HER SISTER FROM PARIS (1925) with Ronald Coleman, and allot more. Here are some links providing additional details about the event: http://www.kssilentfilmfest.org/kssff2009/notes.html http://www.kansascity.com/entertainment/movies/story/960062.html www.kssilentfilmfest.org. -
Hey, I was just glad to see this one again. I hadn't seen the movie at all in over 20 years, and yet I still remembered every single musical number like it was just yesterday! A very fun movie. Didn't even know it was out on DVD? That's news to me. I will certainly try to find a copy! And is it just me, or didn't this film influence THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES heavily?
-
Not to change the subject, but does anyone here on these boards actually like CARNAL KNOWLEDGE??? I had not seen this movie in probably at least 20 years. So I recorded it this morning. Now I am trying to figure out just why I would do this? I did not like it all when I first saw it, and you know what I still don't like the movie at all now? In-fact I pretty much hated it! My question is this what in the devil is this movie supposed to be about anyway? Huh? I just don't get it??? Talk about your overrated trash!

Mongo, I've been told that Greta Garbo was Not a Redhead? But She sure looks like a Redhead to me there? Rather she was a supposedly " A Dark Blonde?" What ever the heck that is? I figured at the very least a "Strawberry Blonde? That is what I always believed that she was? If this is a true color photo that you posted, I am unable to determine the eye-color??? Always had them as Brown, but have been told that they were Blue? Huh? I'm still not convinced! In Black and White Her eyes clearly appear to be Brown, and and her hair Red? At least that was my impression? *A Readheaded Greta Garbo, "Stoic Intensity."*
