johnm_001 Who cares about James Darren or Frankie Avalon? THE LIVELY SET has Pamela Tiffin one of the most gorgeous gals to ever grace the screen! Back in the day when AMC had no commecials they used to run this film frequently, She should have been a much bigger Star. Would love to see THE PLEASURE SEEKERS (1964) which Starred a Trio of incredible beauties. Carol Lynly, Pamela Tiffin, and Ann Margaret. I like Ann, but personally I would have took Pamela any day. And is it just me, or am I the only one who doesn't think that Ann Margaret had a good singing voice at all? AMC used to run this one too, but it has never been on TCM. Trying to remember the male Stars who were in the picture but it is not easy to do?

Thoroughly Modern Millie (Universal, 1966). This Oscar Winning Musical has never, ever been shown on TCM! -
Everyone, There is no official DVD of WHAT PRICE GLORY? (1926) from Fox, and never has been. I hope that there will be eventually. This is a major Silent that has never been commercially available except from 16 Millimeter dupes. Anything being sold out there is bound to be a sub-par bootleg. Based on the popular stage success, WHAT PRICE GLORY? was Fox attempt to try to top MGM's unprecedented success with King Vidor's Masterpiece THE BIG PARADE (1925). While I like it allot, it is nowhere near as good as THE BIG PARADE was. Even though both stories were pinned by the same screen writer one Lawrence Stallings. In-fact King Vidor had intended to make WHAT PRICE GLORY?, and discovered that the rights were snapped up by Fox. So he settled on THE BIG PARADE instead. Thank goodness that He did! Yet by the time WHAT PRICE was ready for release THE BIG PARADE had become measuring stick of any war or for that matter non War picture made in Hollywood. While WHAT PRICE GLORY? made Delores Del Rio a major Star, her Character of "Charmaine" lacks the warmth, and endearing quality's of Renee Adoree's precious "Melisande" in THE BIG PARADE. Victor McLaglen and Edmund Lowe are allot of fun as the two feuding officers Flagg, and Quirt. However, the trio of Jim (John Gilbert), Bull (Tom O'Brien), And Slim (Karl Dane), in THE BIG PARADE are much more human, and likeable. The Critics Choice VHS of WHAT PRICE GLORY? is poor quality with a good, but badly muffled Piano score by William Perry recorded back in the early 70's. However, if you want to see some DVD-R clips of the film from a 35 millimeter master with it's vintage Erno Rapee-Lew Pollack Fox-Movie tone score in a very nice sharp print, just click on the following links here. http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/what-price-glory-1926operation'>http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/what-price-glory-1926operation http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/what-price-glory-1926-lack-of http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/what-price-glory-1926 http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/what-price-glory-1926-the http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/what-price-glory-1926fresh http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/what-price-glory-1926quirt-and http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/what-price-glory-1926colossal http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/2023331:Video:89252

musicalnovelty, Yes, I did inquire about the survival status of SHOW FOLKS. I was pleased to learn that the film is still with us. GAOH is a reference to the Golden Age Of Hollywood on Ning networks. You are certainly invited to join up. My page on GAOH is here: http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/profile/TheGiant I have the 1929 SHOW BOAT but I have never gotten around to watching it. This had been released on Laser-disc several years ago. Any up-dates on if a score might be commissioned for HER WILD OAT, and we might be getting a TCM premier sometime soon? Last July I was told that this movie was on TCM's radar, however you take that statement. So was Marion Davies THE FAIR CO-ED (1927) with Johnny Mack Brown, and Jane Winton. . I have seen two prints of ORCHIDS AND ERMINE, and both are complete as far as I can tell, other than a few missing title cards here and there. Also have seen a few earlier Colleen Moore titles like LITTLE ORPHANT' ANNIE (1918), and King Vidor's THE SKY PILOT (1921). Of course THE BUSHER with Charles Ray, and John Gilbert is on DVD from Kino,. However, several title-cards are missing from their print which really makes the story confusing. *Colleen Moore, Short And Sweet* Originally I had read that Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks would be re-creating the missing portions of the score to SYNTHETIC SIN. Is this correct? I am a big fan, but these guys had all but disappeared? Giordano's score to Keaton's SHERLOCK JUNIOR, and the Harold Lloyd Two-reelers he scored, have never been on DVD. Apart from the sound disc's, what about new transfers, have they been struck yet? Or are both these films still strictly on Nitrate Stock? I definitely won't feel safe about the matter until I know that they have at least been copied, and backed up. And besides those, what about LILAC TIME? This film is important in allot of ways. One of the last blockbuster Silent's. Made Gary Cooper a big name, the beautiful "Jeannine" song , etc. It was also the First National's earliest release with a synchronized track. A 35 Millimeter print was screened in November near Chicago. It was shown in 2003 with it's original recorded track at a festival event, so I know that this still exists. At one time this was not known to have survived. Over a year ago, almost 2 years ago in March I believe, there was talk of a restoration from a European print, but I never had any real details. Might mention that with IRENE (1926) the Two-Strip Technicolor footage is still around. The entire last real is in Two-Strip. So it is pretty important that footage be restored. A chance to see Colleen's amazing Dual-color eyes on film! *Colleen Moore "Oppsie, We Fawd Down! To Cute Of a Klutz!" With George K. Arthur From IRENE (First National, 1926.)*

vitaphony, Everyone, The following ties right in with the ungoing thread. Here are direct links to eight clips in relative order (there is footage omitted between), of a very big MGM Silent that has never been seen on TCM to date! I sincerely hope that it will be before to long. This has gotta be one of my favorite movies! You are going to really love this stuff! These clips only take us up to about to the middle of the picture. The main title and opening sequences are not posted. A huge cast John Gilbert, Renee Adoree, Ernest Torrence, Nils Asther. And two Big name directors of the day George W. Hill, and Clarence Brown from 1928. Take a gander, and enjoy! http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/the-cossacks-1928romantic http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/the-cossacks1928lover-not http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/the-cossacks1928lover-not-a http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/the-cossacks-1928the-royal'>http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/the-cossacks-1928the-royal'>http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/the-cossacks-1928the-royal'>http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/the-cossacks-1928the-royal http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/the-cossacks-1928watch-fires http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/the-cossacks1928-torrid http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/the-cossacks-1928the http://goldenageofhollywood.ning.com/video/the-cossacks-1928-betrayal -

musicalnovelty, If you are talking about THE GODLESS GIRL, and my erroneously labeling the Photo as Lina Basquette on GAOH. Yes, I have THE LOVE TRAP DVD. But I thought you said that He had THE LOVE THRILL? The Laura La Plante Silents I have seen include SMOULDERING FIRES (1924), SKINNERS DRESS SUIT (1926), THE CAT AND THE CANARY (1927), THE LAST WARNING (1929), and THE LOVE TRAP (1929). I have not seen BUTTERFLY (1924), and HER BIG NIGHT (1926), both Universal Pictures Silents that exist, and have been restored by UCLA. *Laura La Plante "To Adorable!"* As for Colleen Moore, I have seen about the same number of her films, maybe a few more than Laura. Those would include ORCHIDS AND ERMINE and love it. A delightful Romantic/Screwball Comedy. Did you get to see a good 35 millimeter print from Warner's at the festival? I have been told that they have one, but I have never see it. Same with LILAC TIME, IRENE, TWINKLE TOES, and other Colleen Moore First National features. Apparently, only ELLA CINDERS is Public Domain among the First National's, and it would be great to see a restored version from Milestone, Flicker Alley or someone. The Sunrise Silents release of ELLA is very good quality, by far the best I have seen of the title, but the film is not complete. As you probably have heard Colleen's final two silents both long considered lost SYNTHETIC SIN, and WHY BE GOOD?, are both scheduled to be restored as part of the Vita-phone project. But this has been put off for a couple years already. I was told it would be happening this year, last year. I sure hope so. When my friend checked with UCLA back in October both films were still listed as Nitrate Only. Neither had even been transferred to Safety-Stock! That's scary! *Over worked Colleen from WHY BE GOOD? (1929)*

Calvin, HIS GLORIOUS NIGHT is owned by Paramount. Ever though it was an MGM release. The reason for this is the story was later re-made by them. -

Ed, Paramountt, I am trying to locate the thread that mentioned the ZAZA screening at UCLA. This was on Nitrateville.com where Michael Mortilla who will be playing live to the film, asked about the song Gloria was playing in the movie on the Piano. He wanted to use the same melody in his own scoring, but had not had time to see much of the picture before hand. I expected to be able to find this thread right away, but have not been able to. I am starting to wonder if it is still there? As soon as I do find the thread I will post the link here on this forum.

paramount, Well, we should be getting either THE WHITE SISTER, or BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT by May. At least I hope that we will. Additionally, TCM Premier's of Lon Chaney's THE MOCKERY (1927), and possibly the newly restored version of King Vidor's THE BIG PARADE are also in the works.
-
paramountt, ZAZA has been touring, have you seen it? There is a screening coming up in just a few days from now.
-
PrinceSaliano, The only Columbia Silent that has been restored recently that I know of is THE BLOOD SHIP, with Hobart Bosworth, Jacqueline Logan, and Richard Arlen. There might be a few others, but I don't know what they are. I wonder if TCM has ever broadcast Frank Capra's THE MATINEE IDOL with Bessie Love and Johnnie Walker before? It has been out on DVD. The Columbia Silents are owned by Sony, and I am not sure what TCM's access is, but there are a surprising number of surviving Columbia features.
-
musicalnovelty, Hi, welcome to the forum. I would love to see THE LOVE THRILL, DANGEROUS INNOCENCE, BUTTERFLY, HER BIG NIGHT etc. I love Laura La Plante. She was great in everything I have seen her in. A surprising amount of her Silent films actually do still exist. If you friend has a good copy of LOVE THRILL, and maybe some of these others, perhaps we could work out a trade? I have over 800 Silent features on DVD-R, and frankly I know of very few collectors anywhere that have more than I do. That does not even include short subjects. And have you actually seen HER WILD OAT? I am hoping TCM will debut the film with a new score sometime this year. I know that it was restored in 2006, and has been touring the Art Houses, and festivals the past couple of years. Colleen Moore's remaining films should all be restored and out on official DVD!
-
Wendy, In 2006, Chaplin was featured on Summer Under The Stars. In 2007, it was Buster Keaton. Now 2008? Harold Lloyd right? Wrong! Chaplin again. I just expected it to be Harold. 2009? We shall see? And yes TCM runs Harold Lloyd films fairly frequently. As there are both Chaplin, and Lloyd Birthday Tribute's in April, it seems unlikely that Harold will be selected for August this year?
-
Wendy, I mentioned the possibility of a Pickford/Fairbanks month several times in the past. This is more than feasible. As well as the aforementioned 1920's month. A John Gilbert month would be good too. Maybe for Summer Under The Stars, where Harold Lloyd was snubbed last year. Probably not going to see a Chaney month. Not enough restored films with scores for a whole months programming. Same thing with Marion Davies. Most of her MGM Silents haven't been scored yet. TCM actually runs allot more of Marion's talkies than they do her Silent's. Among the MGM Silent's only THE RED MILL, THE PATSY, SHOW PEOPLE, and maybe QUALITY STREET have been broadcast so far. I'm holding out hope for a premier of THE FAIR CO-ED. or TILLIE THE TOILER sometime this year. But it probably won't happen with all the budget slashing taking place. We are getting some new Silents. THE WHITE SISTER, BARDLEYS THE MAGNIFICENT, and THE MOCKERY. None of them exactly new to me. Please TCM/Warner's just give us the restored THE BIG PARADE at long last, as we have been promised for several years now.

Ed, Hey, here is a poster, a Lobby-Card, and a Song Sheet for the original 1920 version of OVER THE HILL TO THE POORHOUSE, or just OVER THE HILL. Please ask Kevin Brownlow about this movie if you get a chance. I assume the prints and negatives were lost in the 1937 Fox Vault Fire? Though I have no firm information about this matter. OVER THE HILL was truly a Monster success, with both the Public, and Critics alike. Probably the biggest money-maker of 1920, by a large margin, or at least on a par with WAY DOWN EAST and SEX. and right up there with THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE as the highest grossing film of the first half of the 1920's. Mary Carr was much beloved as the favorite Mother figure in the movies. Apparently she played many such roles. Her performance as "Ma Benton" would have no doubt earned an Oscar nomination, if they had an Academy Awards at the time. She looked just like my dear Grandma Lucille on my Mothers side who passed away in 1990. If it is lost, than OVER THE HILL should be among the top 10 most sought after Silent films of them all, I would think? At least in the top 20, and it was much bigger than most of the movies that would be ranked ahead of it. The film was still playing in theaters as late as 1923 or even 1924! I've also wondered if this movie hadn't left a profound impression on John Ford when He made FOUR SONS in 1928? His "Mother Bernle" character played by Margaret Mann seems to have been inspired greatly by Mary Carr's "Ma Benton". *OVER THE HILL (1920) Vintage Lobby-Card.* *OVER THE HILL Song Sheet (1920)* *OVER THE HILL (Fox, 1920) Vintage Movie Poster, Mary Carr, Johnnie Walker.*
