  1. Ed,

It sounds great! I think I have a poster for this movie in here someplace? I will see if I can find it? Warner's probably does have a good print to work with. I wonder if Kevin Brownlow has seen this one before?

  2. skibo1960,

To be honest, I had never seen the Alistair Sim one before, until just a couple years ago. after hearing how great that it was from so many people, I was rather disappointed. Sim is the voice of SCROOGE in the most intense Animated version the Chuck Jones Special, and is great in that though.

  3. Fred,

Again, THE VIKING is Two-Color Technicolor, not Two-Strip. This is not the same thing. Two-color was a later process. I agree the colors are stunning! Please request that TCM run this movie again, it hasn't been shown in the better part of a decade! I would love to be able to get a better recording of the film then I currently have. It's an important film historically in terms of the Two-Color process. It's also a very good movie.

  4. hlywdkjk,

I have no idea where the rather smallish 3500 figure came from? I believe it was actually over 10, 000 movies! At least, that's what TCM used to advertise back in 1999, when I first got the channel. Over 10, 000 movies in it's library, that they could actually show! Many of them exclusive to TCM. They were still running this promo in 2002. Maybe even 2003? I may even have a recording of it around here someplace?

I believe TCM still has access to all the MGM/United Artists, and obviously Warner's stuff that is in a broadcast format? They aren't limited to just a few hundred Cherry-picked titles that Warner's is willing to share with them. They can still lease what is available. Have you tried request a movie?

  5. alix1929,

Yes, that's the guy. The studio doctors were to blame, for keeping him supplied with the stuff in the first place.

Please look at, and comment on the Silent Film Gallery thread if you would be so kind. Thank you.

  6. Lynn,

I think Chuck Tabesh is doing a great job! He recently inked a long-term contract with Kevin Brownlow's Photo-play Productions! That means we could be seeing stuff like Thames HOLLYWOOD back on TCM, and re-mastered! Also the newly restored version of Valentino's THE EAGLE, and with the Carl Davis score it had on laser-disc years ago! Same with Griffith's INTOLERANCE, Fairbanks THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, and the list goes on, and on!

We just had the first ever American broadcast of the Photo-play ORPHANS OF THE STORM a couple weeks ago! Chaney's THE MOCKERY is coming in April. and shortly after that John Gilbert's BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT!

Next week the U. S. Premier of De Mille's THE GODLESS GIRL! Surely a Masterpiece! In-fact, I think it's De Mille's best film! I wish they would pickup SEVENTH HEAVEN, and STREET ANGEL though. Hopefully, LUCKY STAR, and CITY GIRL as well. Although I have no information about this matter.

Tonight the debut on TCM of the long unseen SCROOGE (1970)! That is another wonderful acquisition! Mr. Tabesh said that they were working hard on getting Betty Hutton's INCENDIARY BLONDE (1945)! We should be seeing it in 2009! Maybe some other long unseen Hutton comedies as well!

As for you, and who ever else is complaining about Peter Sellers, and Woody Allen? Their films have always been on TCM, and in pretty heavy rotation. There is nothing new about this at all. I do not understand the gripes?

  7. Lynn,

The Mr. Magoo one produced in 1962, has been released on DVD. It may still be in print. I remember this well, but it doesn't move me the way a few others did.

I still greatly prefer the two CBS Animated versions produced in 1969, and the Chuck Jones one from 1971 that ran on ABC. This actually won an Emmy by the way for best Holiday Special. Those were the finest Scrooge cartoons ever produced by anyone! The CBS versions (there were two) were a holiday tradition throughout the 70's. Then they just vanished, and never even pop up in re-runs anyplace! Apparently, the rights are tied up to them somehow? Somebody must have them though?

I do have a beautiful copy of the Chuck Jones Special on DVD-R. A limited edition put out by Anchor Bay a few years ago. Sold only at a Animation convention. It still has had no official release. I am very lucky to have this!

  8. mongo,

I have never seen these photos before. Some very unique publicity stills for WINGS. With Clara Bow Breaking Hearts in a rather Skimpy Pilot costume. Looking quite adorable while doing it. Very Fun Stuff Indeed!

It's interesting that the Tint of these photos is virtually identical to what most of the footage in the Photo-play Productions version of WINGS looks like! A light gold shade. Some sequences have a green tint, and a few are blue, but most of them look almost exactly like the pictures you see here!

  9. In must say that I am elated that the 1970 version with Albert Finney is making it's TCM premier this evening! This version hasn't gotten much exposure in years, and years! It's the live version that I grew up with, and the one that I still like the best. The 1938 one is quite good though, but made some odd changes.

When I was a kid back in the 70's, we had a couple great Animated versions of A CHRISTMAS CAROL on CBS ever year. They would alternate which one they would show, and those ran several times in the late afternoon's, between Thanksgiving, and Christmas. They ran these up until about 1981, and then they disappeared never to be seen again! What happened to them???

I am not referring to the Chuck Jones version with Sim reprising the voice of SCROOGE, that was on ABC evenings, and was great too. None of these three animated version's have been released on commercial DVD. Replaced later with newer, and decidedly inferior adaptations of the story.

  11. Wendy,

Haven't you seen THE GODLESS GIRL??? I was under the impression that you had? Anyway, it's on next week. Personally, I think this is De Mille's best film!

A great write up on the movie in the Silent Sunday Nights profiles for this month. However, it was originally released as a Silent in August of 1928, but as a goat gland re-edited with Talking sequences added, and an altered plot in 1929.

TCM is running the 1928 Silent cut of the film with the Carl Davis score. Therefore, they really should have it listed as a 1928 film, not a 1929 one. There is no goat-gland footage in the Photo-play Productions version at all. Which I am quite thankful for!

  12. Wendy,

I just corrected somone else on this last week. Actually, neither version of BEN HUR was Directed by Cecil B. De Mille. They thought both were too! So don't feel bad.

You must be thinking of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1923), which is also on DVD by the way. Yes, De Mille did Direct the Silent, and much later sound versions there. He had nothing to do with BEN HUR of any kind though. De Mille did make the original Silent version of THE KING OF KINGS (1927) which is also on DVD. Surely a Masterpiece if you haven't seen it. Be sure to get the Criterion 2-disc DVD release. And a chance to see Jacqueline Logan too!

The Silent version of BEN HUR was to be Directed by Charles Brabin, and was later assigned to Fred Niblo who did a fabulous job. Niblo was a Giant director in the Silent days, who has been almost completely forgotten. The 1959 BEN HUR was directed by William Wyler, who did direct some Silent films in the second half of the 1920's.

After TCM opted for THE KING OF KINGS last year, BEN HUR (1925) is back on TCM again this month. The Nativity was shot in Two-Strip Technicolor. As were several other sequences. Production was delayed on BEN HUR for nearly two years. MGM determined that they could not make the film in Italy after-all. Most of the Sea Battle sequences were filmed as early as 1923, if not all of them. The film would not be released until November of 1925.

Betty Bronson who was best known as Cinderella, and Peter Pan, might have made the most beautiful Mary that has ever been seen in the movies? A truly Stunning Woman. And yet, even she arguably doesn't match May McAvoy as the Jaw-droppingly lovely Esther in the film. Then there is Carmel Myers as a voracious man-eating Egyptian Princess. Some very pretty ladies.

  13. Wendy,

I concur wholeheartedly. Again, there is talk of others in the coming year, but it's been that way for at least 5 years now. So far nothing much has happened. Just talk, is all we have. There was the Garbo Silents set in September of 2005, but that's about it. And that left out a number of Key titles.

I figure that if Warner's is releasing THE BIG PARADE at all in 2009, it will likely be still another end of the year deal again, like the Murna-Borzage set from Fox, and the new Fairbanks Collection from Flicker Alley. I am frustrated having to wait that blasted long! Could be dead by then anyway! I hope that I am wrong, and it is out much sooner than that, but don't count on it happening.

The Flicker Alley BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT could debut on TCM as soon as April or May, but probably won't be released on DVD until Mid Summer, or even sometime in the Fall? I still think it's weird that Flicker Alley not Warner's would release BARDELYS especially, if as claimed Warner's intended to release a Vidor Silents collection? I assume pretty soon.

While Gilbert's MONTE CRISTO (Fox, 1922) is interesting, I would have much rather that David Shepard, and Lobster films had restored HIS HOUR (1924) instead. At least it was Directed by Vidor, and is a hugely important film in Gilbert's career. Wouldn't that be great to have paired with BARDELYS, or even THE BIG PARADE? I never thought I would be seeing SEVENTH HEAVEN, or STREET ANGEL on DVD, before THE BIG PARADE, or THE CROWD! Warner's long promised releases are long over-due.

  14. Wendy,

These are great. The Tint of those photos is virtually identical to what most of the footage in the Photo-play Productions version of WINGS looks like. A light gold shade. Some sequences have a green tint, and a few are blue, but most of them look almost exactly like these pictures!

Can't wait for BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT to air, or be released on DVD? Probably at the soonest that would be April. or May. Though it could slip into the Summer, or even the Fall? Err, no need to wait that long. Well anyway, this next one is just for you! I goofed on The top of Gilbert's hair. Otherwise, this is probably the best thing I have done in awhile. What a superb still! I was really lucky to find this one!

  16. carolynkingsley,

Well, here is at least one John Gilbert film that we know will be coming to DVD sometime next year from Ficker Alley, probably in the late Spring. The newly re-discovered, and recently restored BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT (1926), directed by King Vidor. Incredibly this will be the very first Vidor Silent ever to appear on official DVD!

  17. CelluloidKid,

I have seen GENTLEMAN PREFER BLONDES dozens of times, and have always loved it! I have the DVD, and have had it for several years now.

TCM has run this before but not very often. Probably been a couple years too, since they have shown the film. My only beef with the picture is the mis-casting of Marilyn's Boyfriend. What a Drip! Surely they could have done better than him? Great to see TCM have this movie back on their schedule!

The original 1927 Silent version with Alice White and Ruth Taylor is considered lost. It was a very big film too. Making Alice White a sensation!

I saw the promo for this the other night, Very exciting news, because it is all limited edition stuff offered only on this website and nowhere else? Some very good films too. I really enjoyed RAFTER ROMANCE, and Ginger Rogers is always wonderful in anything. A good set all around.

So OK, if they can do this, then they can likewise give us all the Thames/Photo-play Productions Silents Series at least of the MGM titles too, right here in limited editions as well. Couldn't they? I don't see why not?

The Metro/MGM set would include THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE, THE BIG PARADE, BEN HUR, and FLESH AND THE DEVIL (both previously released), OLD HEIDELBERG, THE CROWD, A WOMAN OF AFFAIRS, THE MYSTERIOUS LADY ( released before, but not with the Carl Davis score, include the Vivek Maddalla one as an Alternate track), and SHOW PEOPLE. (Note: TCM does not run the Davis scored version, but the vintage Axt, Mendoza one of SHOW PEOPLE.) Though Thames did it's own version of GREED, at 2 and a half hours, that was later replaced with the 4 hour reconstruction. This would be a very nice alternative, Until the Warner's DVD's. are finally ready for full release of these films.

At least these movies would be accessible to the public and to collectors that way. At present most are not available at all, except in very expensive, difficult to find, and long Out Of Print Laser-disc's, and VHS releases.

TCM apparently just inked a long term deal with Photo-play Productions a few months ago. So they might be able to have another series, consisting of not just MGM Silents? Stuff like the Carl Davis scored versions of THE EAGLE (1925) with Valentino, and Banky, recently restored from the original negative, and Fairbanks THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, plus THE GODLESS GIRL, among others.
