nosound, I have all of those Raymond Griffith's except OPEN ALL NIGHT. These are not great prints by any means. Hopefully, better ones survive someplace? David Shepard said that they did, but wasn't specific. I have BROKEN HEARTS OF BROADWAY too. In-fact, I have a couple different versions. One from Sunrise Silent's the other from Unknown Video. No, that's not the one. It is the correct year though. Some months ago, they had another film of Colleen Moore's from 1923 for sale on Ioffer.com. I just can not recall the title?

nosound. To update the post a little, HER BIG NIGHT (Universal, 1926) with Laura La Plante survives. I know people who have seen it. Dan Navarro viewed it at a live screening, and claimed that the print was in superb condition. Not needing much restoration at all. Clarence Brown's BUTTERFLY (Universal, 1924), with La Plante, Norman Kerry, and Margaret Livingston, was recently restored by UCLA according to Kevin Brownlow, so was Sidney Franklin's THE HOMEMAKER with Alice Joyce, and Clive Brook. HER SISTER FROM PARIS (First National, 1925) with Constance Talmadge and Ronald Coleman meanwhile, was restored a year or two ago by the Doris group. Along with the Norma Talmadge KIKI. The restored Talmadge titles might make it to DVD from someone, or so I have been told, probably Milestone, or Kino before to long now? So that is good news. Ed managed to find a copy of THE FAIR CO-ED, but the quality was dismal. However, in July there was a screening of a new 35 Millimeter print in L. A. I know of people who have claimed to have seen TIN GODS, and FORBIDDEN HOURS? The later apparently had a live screening in 2002. However, Silent era.com still list's that film as "Status Unknown"?
-
Ed, Don't forget about CAMEO KIRBY. And here are a few more titles of great interest. BUTTERFLY, HER BIG NIGHT, HER SISTER FROM PARIS, THE HOMEMAKER, THE JONESTOWN FLOOD, and TIN GODS. Also anything with Corinne Griffith, or Colleen Moore that I don't already have.

Big_Bopper, Most DVD players made in the past 4 to 5 years will read DVD-R, and DVD+R format. You should be able to get a used one for little of nothing that plays recorded DVD-R's. Maybe even a used DVD-Recorder for little of nothing. I agree that HD is a joke as far as I am concerned. Who wants to watch continuous commercials in HD??? Probably very few classic films will ever be offered in this format either? I have very limited to zero interest in contemporary movies. So what is the point? Let them take away the network channels in February, I don't watch them anyway. The only show on any of the networks that I keep on on is SMALLVILLE, which I have watched from when it first came on the air. I have not followed another weekly series in years, and years.
-
nosound, Hey, All of these sound interesting. Especially, the Billie Dove movie. Not sure where you are finding some of these films at? You consistently have been able to come up with titles I have not seen anywhere else.

PopcornAndDots, Huh? Please note, it was certainly never my intention to be rude in any way to you or anyone else for that matter on this forum. As anyone who knows me here can attest, I am not like that. While I wish I could say that I have seen more of Will Rogers work, I haven't. And majority of his films seemingly have not survived? I do not understand why you thought that I was trying to be rude or meant to insult you? Nevertheless, My sincere apology for this misunderstanding.

Ed, This article is great! I knew really very little about Johnny Mack Brown other than He was a former Football player at Alabama. Course I have seen several of his Silent films, and a few of the Westerns. That's about all though.

Eveyone, The infinitely superior Kevin Brownlow-David Gill-Patrick Stanbury Photo-play Productions edition of WINGS is still tied up in an absurd "Legal Limbo", and thus not on TCM. When by all rights it should be the version that they are running. Incredibly, however, this landmark movie is being screened, with a live orchestral performance of the Carl Davis score this coming February, in Wisconsin! If you want to see a beautifully restored, tinted 35 millimeter print of WINGS, not the murky old dubb TCM is forced to run, on the big screen, then here is your chance! http://www.beloitjanesvillesymphony.org/performances.html http://nitrateville.com/viewtopic.php?t=1884 *Buddy Rogers, Clara Bow, and Richard Arlen. Ed, Yes, I am very excited about finally seeing this edition at long last! I certainly haven't given up in my quest to get the Photo-play version on TCM either. Apparently, there never were any American Broadcast rights, just British Television? Well, I say Big Deal! In 16 years, that should have changed! It all comes down to Paramount not paying Photo-play, and Carl Davis anything for their hard-work. Gaylord Carter is passed on and apparently has no heirs to speak of? That's why Paramount sticks with his version. They don't have to shell out any additional royalties to anyone. The Safety-stock transfer used for the 1985 Paramount laser-disc was struck clear back in 1965! I am not kidding! 43 years ago! Yet that is all that TCM is allowed to play of this picture! Not TCM's fault at all. Here is a photo I just worked on a couple nights ago of Marion Davies. -
Film_Fatale, Well, this is still a few months away. We will have to wait and see what develops. Never been to Wisconsin before, but they make the best Cheese in America! Meantime, I just sent you a PM. I certainly haven't given up in my quest to get the Photo-play version on TCM. Apparently, there never were any American broadcast rights? Big deal! In 16 years that should have changed! Same with THE WEDDING MARCH! It all comes down to Paramount not paying Photo-play, and Carl Davis anything. Angie, Thanks, but the second photo from ETERNAL LOVE is very clearly not Camilla Horn, but the other girl in the movie. I have forgotten who she was? The third photo appears to be from THE TEMPEST? None of these do the lady justice, but I appreciate your efforts. I went to Corbis last night for the first time too, and found all kinds of wonderful pictures there! Thanks much for telling me about this site.

Big_Bopper, The Photo-play Productions version with the James Bernard score is on DVD from the BFI (British Film Institute), but it is Region 2 encoded and Pal format. The Blackhawk version was probably released on DVD by Image Entertainment, and is likely long out of print. I have never seen this version. As far as I know, TCM still runs the Photo-play version. They have not picked up the new Murna Foundation restoration, which surprises me.
-
Big_Bopper The Murna Foundation restoration found on the Kino Ultimate Edition DVD blows any previous version completely out of the water! Even the Photo-play one! Make sure you get the one with the reprised original 1921 Hans Erdmann Orchestral score. Likewise, the print quality is dramatically better than any other edition that has been released on DVD. Again, this is the Ultimate Edition from Kino which came out last year. Not to be confused with the earlier Special Edition release. If you have a good score, this dramatically enhances the experience. Silent films were never ever intended to be viewed without Music!

Ed, The other film I saw Mary Nolan in was Chaney's WEST OF ZANZIBAR (1928). Do you have a copy of this picture? My friend Kevin W, is gung-ho over her just after seeing those two films, and a few photos. So I sent him and E-mail addressed Mary Nolan: NOT WEARIN' NOTHIN'!!!! Which was of course really the picture in the Sheer-wrap. -Once He started reading I said "Well close of NOTHIN' anyway! Didn't want to give you Heart-Failure! Ha, Ha, Ha!!!" -

Number 7 on my list of The TOP 10 Silent Screen Beauties, here are a couple nice photo's of the lovely Mary Philbin. They are small though, and relatively low resolution. Apparently, any quality portraits of Mary are few and far between on the net? They are either, very small, are inaccessible? Blocked from saving the image. It's rather disappointing that an actress that was in such well known Silent's as MERRY GO ROUND, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and THE MAN WHO LAUGHS is this hard to find good pictures of on the web? I expected that there would be dozens of them to choose from? Apparently, not? *Mary Philbin, one of the Silent Screens most beautiful Stars.* *Mary Philbin, From MERRY GO ROUND (1923)*
