No Turkey for me, at least not yet? Unfortunately, after I got out of the Hospital on Wednesday evening, my Sister subsequently postponed the Family's Thanksgiving feast until Saturday Afternoon. Must say that I'll I'll be mighty hungry by then! Ha, Ha, Ha! Anyway, "Seasons Greetings" everyone!

ChelseaRialtoStudios,
While you can buy the Photo-play Version on DVD from Milestone, it is not the superior broadcast master that TCM aired last week. Still has the Ghosting problem caused by a sub-par Pal to NTSC transfer. Even with that, it is still by far the best print you can find on commercial DVD.

Wendy,
These were the original restored tints from 1925, and 1929. Here is a a quote from the Photo-play website. The URL is to long for me to get it all correct. But this is the link to ORPHANS OF THE STORM, where you will find more links to the pages on THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, THE PATSY, THE BIG PARADE, and more.
http://www.photoplay.co.uk/indiv%20film%20pages/ind%20film%20page%20Orphans%20of%20the%20storm.html
"Original prints of the film were fully tinted, with some sequences in Technicolor, and a rooftop scene using a special process that enabled the Phantom's cloak to show red against the blue night sky. This restoration replicates all these effects, and is accompanied by a score that draws heavily on Gounod's Faust, which is the opera being performed in the film."
In 1925, there were originally two other sequences produced in Two-Strip Technicolor, but those do not survive today. As late as 1929 Universal Pictures Silents were still being elaborately Tinted, and Toned. I just saw Paul Leni's THE LAST WARNING with Laura La Plante recently, and it had a duo-toned process through much of the film. This looked almost like Two-Color Technicolor, which had replaced the 2-Strip Technicolor process by the late 1920's.
-

*Pauline Starke, Dressed in Arabian Attire from THE QUEEN OF SHEBA (1921).*
-
Well, I've got some other posters and lobby-cards for the film in here someplace. This is the only one that I could find right now. Pauline Starke looks great in her Viking attire. Something on the order of a Xena costume in gold, and with a winged helmet.

Film_Fatale, Pastman,
Request that TCM run THE VIKING (1928). The entire feature was filmed in Two-Color Technicolor, not Two-Strip, Two-color was an advance on Two-Strip. The colors are very rich and stunning, and this is a awesome film that TCM hasn't run in 7 years or so. Well past time for them to air it again.

Film_Fatale,
Send me an E-mail if interested in the Photo-play WINGS. I am still hoping TCM will still be able to run this version eventually. Meantime, we are getting the Photo-play editions of both ORPHANS OF THE STORM tomorrow night, and THE GODLESS GIRL next month. Those are TCM premiers! So thank Charles Tabesh for going above and beyond to ink a deal for those versions.
-
Whoops, I hadn't posted the link yet, but it is there now! Some of the battle, and flying sequences were originally presented in a duo-color process, but those only survive in Black and white today.
Quoting deverett on Nitrateville,
"I wish I would have seen this thread when it was active, since Wings is kind of an obsession of mine. It has been "preserved" 3 different times all from the same source material which was a nitrate release print, but has yet to be completed.
The photoplay version has come the closest since they took the time to tint throughout but it does not have all of the proper colors used to match the original continuity (It is pretty darn close, but there were one or two scenes that did not change to the brief lavender if i remember), and they did not restore the original special colored sections which can be spotted by what looks almost like animated flames coming out of the guns on the airplanes, and when the planes are crashing.
The LOC version is also tinted blue in the night scenes only if I remember, but my guess is this was the version that was screened, so those who saw it would know better than me.
The AMPAS version is B/W only
If paramount is doing a high def transfer I would be delighted but also not completely sold that it is for release, since they have "restored" a number of clara bow films and have yet to release any of them.
Someday this film will be restored properly and completely, and when it is I'll be first in line to buy a ticket..
I am pretty sure that all the 16mm prints of WINGS have the same Gaylord carter score on them. I actually have this crazy mission to quasi enhance one of my 16mm prints with the proper tints and special color, and have a recording of a Jon Mirsalis score that he made for an old collector back in the day, that I figured i would play as accompaniament if i ever finish it.
But it is definately a film that has no real reason to maintain such scarce visibility."
-
Film_Fatale,
The Photo-play version of WINGS is also tinted. However, they did not restore all of the original tints and effects. Here is a link with some surprising information towards the bottom of the thread. I have this version by the way, which we have not seen on TCM with the Carl Davis score.

The two hour David Shepard restoration of HUNCHBACK is on DVD from Image Entertainment, as the Ultimate Edition THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. This is the exact same version that TCM runs. Make sure that you get the Ultimate Edition though. Other releases, are far less complete, and not nearly as good of a print quality.

Ed,
I figure that if they are releasing THE BIG PARADE at all in 2009, it will likely be still another end of the year deal again, like the forthcoming Murna-Borzage set from Fox, and the new Fairbanks Collection from Flicker Alley. I am frustrated having to wait that blasted long! Could be dead by then anyway! I hope that I am wrong, and it is out much sooner than that, but don't count on it!
Bare in mind, that for two years we were promised a Lon Chaney Volume 2 collection from TCM Archives, and it has still yet to happen. It was originally slated for release in 2007. Then they delayed the release to 2008. The year is about over, and nothing more has come of this. Warner's originally announced a DVD of THE BIG PARADE in late 2004, for 2005. Never happened. Here are a couple of links from that time.

Ed,
WINE OF YOUTH (1924) also has Pauline Garron, Virginia Lee Corbin, and as extra's Jean Arthur, and Clark Gable! I think it's King Vidor's most underrated feature. Though I haven't seen PROUD FLESH (1925) yet. LA BOHEME (1926) needs re-mastering, and an upgraded score. The print TCM has been running is very soft, and moves at way to fast a rate of speed.
If they would just score THE FAIR CO-ED, and THE CARDBOARD LOVER, those could both be included in a Marion Davies collection. And even though QUALITY STREET (1927) has had a DVD release from Image Entertaimnment several years ago, it was not the full scale release we would probably see from Warner's, nor was it the best print around either.
-
Ed,
THE BIG PARADE sounds ike it will be part of a 2 or 3 disc set from Warner's Probably with a number of extra's. Or it could be included with a larger King Vidor Box set also featuring THE PATSY, SHOW PEOPLE, and THE CROWD. Maybe even LA BOHEME?
I would much rather have PROUD FLESH, or WINE OF YOUTH instead of WILD ORANGES though, but that could be the other title we get unfortunately, as it is already scored. Current plans seem to center around a Vidor set rather than a John Gilbert one. No plans for a Marion Davies set that I know of, so this would leave out THE RED MILL.

BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT, and MONTE CRISTO appear to be coming from Flicker Alley. They might be our best chance at seeing a restored HIS HOUR in the future too. Why they restored MONTE CHRISTO rather than HIS HOUR I have no idea? CRISTO wasn't Directed by Vidor.
-
Ed,
MONTE CRISTO has been newly restored, or David Shepard wouldn't have mentioned it. But I would rather that they had restored King Vidor's HIS HOUR (1924) instead. Plus these are apparently not films that Warners own's.
Unlike BARDELYS The other MGM Gilbert features such as THE SHOW, MAN, WOMAN, & SIN, TWELVE MILES OUT, and THE COSSACKS seem less likely to be released by Flicker Alley. Unless David Shepard, or Lobster was involved in the restorations of those too, which I don't believe to be the case.
-
ILoveRayMilland,
Thanks for voting. THE BIG PARADE will make you very excited about Silent films. It is a must see movie.
-
calvinnme,
Yes it is true that King Vidor's newly restored BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT (1926) with John Gilbert, and Eleanor Boardman, should be out by April or May from Jeffrey Mansino's Flicker Alley. Warner's, and Sony have consented to this. Expect a TCM Premier around the same time. The long lost film was just found in the fall of 2007, and immediate restoration process begin, within just a few weeks of the discovery by David Shepard's Film Preservation Associates, and Lobster film of Paris.
Rodney Sauer and Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra are putting together a score now, that will be recorded in January. I have already seen the film, it was on France 3 last month. A Friend in Paris set me a recording of the broadcast. The score there was by Antonio Coppolla, and actually quite good. The third reel is missing, and has been re-created with Stills, but the story holds up quite well. Though we can certainly hope that this footage will yet be uncovered elsewhere. I wrote a full review some weeks ago, if you go back a couple of pages or so, you should find the post in this forum.
Initial reports had Gilbert's recently restored Fox feature MONTE CRISTO (1922) with Estelle Taylor, as the other film to be included in the 2 disc DVD set. Unfortunately, I have no further details. Send me a PM if you have other questions? Or do you have my E-mail address?

-
pastman,
I'm glad thjat you enjoyed THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, even though it is the scaled down 1929 re-edit of the film. Much of the important development of the story, and characters has been lost from the 1925 original release. Did you see the 1923 THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME as well?
-
Wendy, ugaarte, Everyone,
Check this out. It is a clip from the Photo-play Productions version of King Vidor's/Marion Davies THE PATSY that we never get to see in the United States. The score is by Maud Nelissen. I wish there was more of it here. Also a link to her Website.

The new broadcast master of Photo-play's 1996 Restoration of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA which TCM premiered last night, looked much improved. Almost all the the Ghosting we had before on TCM, and the 2003 Milestone Ultimate Edition DVD release that trialed the actors was now gone.
THE PHANTOM is not really one of my favorites, but it was good to see a nicely restored Silent like this in Prime-time. It's just unfortunate, that we are not really seeing the 1925 version, but the much Altered 1929-re-release. Considerably weakened from the original cut of the film. Complaints about projection speed are unfounded. The projection speed was nearly perfect by 1925 Standards, of the 1929 version. Definitely not 18 frames per-second. More like 22.
Was it just me, or didn't HUNCHBACK also look much better than it did just last month? I didn't watch much of the broadcast in October, but I ended up seeing the whole thing last night, and really enjoyed it.
By the way, the film is THE YOUNG IN HEART not YOUNG AT HEART. I really love SMALL TOWN GIRL, a highly underrated film. Janet Gaynor seemed to receive a warn reception a couple nights ago. Now hopefully, this will give TCM some incentive to ink a pact with Fox for SEVENTH HEAVEN, STREET ANGEL, and LUCKY STAR. I wouldn't mind seeing SUNNY SIDE UP either.

Hibi,
Afraid not, I wish it had been shown more recently, but it hasn't. Memorial Day 2004 was the last timeTCM Broadcast THE BIG PARADE. I recorded it then. The 1983 Thames Silents version. Except this had the credits of the 1931 re-issue, where the MGM Laser-disc release had the original 1925 credits. I don't know why this is? Both had the Carl Davis score. I appreciate your vote, and the request greatly! Thanks much.

Ed,
I can't comment to much I'm afraid. I haven't seen this one in years, and do not remember it very well at all. Probably has been since about 2003, since I have seen the picture. Do you have the Image Entertainment DVD version? It is a very good print if I recall correctly.
