Mike,
Well I have THE PAGAN, and I also have NOAH'S ARK with Delores Costello, and George O'Brien, So those are two more you may want to trade for? Also have WHEN A MAN LOVES with Delores Costello.
I love Chaplin, but if you were looking at his very early short's I can understand your being somewhat puzzled.

The number Three and Four ladies on my lst of the most beautiful actresses of the Silent era. Jacqueline Logan, and Delores Costello.

*Jacqueline Logan. Timeless, Classic Beauty.*

*Delores Costello, like an Angel in White.*
-
Mike,
Granted Evelyn Brent looks more like a linebacker in that photo, compared with some of the more dainity ladies of the era. However, she really wasn't anywhere near that husky as this picture implies. Far from it.
Here is a lady no one could ever mistake for a man. Number 3 on my top 10 list of the most beautiful Silent Sreen Stars. Tthe luminous Jacqueline Logan.

*Jacqueline Logan, Timeless Classic Beauty*

CelluloidKid,
Say, I didn't realize that Jeanne Eagels was that old when she died? She appeared to be younger on screen. Hasn't her birth date changed in each of these? Funny that none of them make any mention of her Silent films?
Here is a very good photo of Evelyn Brent. Although, I have still seen her look much better than she does here. Nice photo's are not easy to come by.

*Classy Evelyn Brent, one of Paramount's top leading ladies of the Mid to Late 20's.*

Mike,
Here is a much nicer photo of Evelyn Brent, definitely not looking like a Man. Although I have still seen her look much better than this too. Besides THE MATING CALL, You certainly wouldn't mistake her for not being a Woman in either UNDERWORLD, or THE LAST COMMAND, I assure you.

-
Thanks again. That Jeanne Eagels. photo is definitely from MAN, WOMAN & SIN, although it is not especially flattering of her. She appears rather strung over there to me? They also moved her bithday back an additional 3 years.
As I understand it Eagels was hooked on what basically amounted to uppers and downers, not street drugs. She was used much in the same fashion that Judy Garland would be at MGM later on. Although they were both obviously self-destructive. In any case, all very sad to be sure.
-
CelluloidKid,
Thanks much for the info. However, THE LETTER was actually made at Paramount, not MGM. That's pretty much why you never see this picture on TCM. And as I have mentioned, Eagels had already made other movies too. MAN, WOMAN & SIN was an MGM release though. Still an interesing article if not completely accurate. Still require some larger photo's.
-
Ed,
Unfortunately Not. I got my copy of MAN, WOMAN & SIN from Aaron too. It looks to be about a sixth generation one! I may have found a guy in over the U K with a good copy, but I am still waiting to hear back from him. He was not in touch all week. I will keep you up-dated should I hear anything new.
Huh? Why can't I find any good photo's of Jeanne Eagels actually facing the camera? All I can come up with are profiles, and more profiles! She looks very pretty, but it's extremely unusal that these are the only photo's around??? Incidentally, do you have information on an eye-color?
Where on earth did thy ever get the notion that Kim Novak looked like this lady??? Talk about your mis-casting!
-
The legendary stage actress Jeanne Eagels. As you can clearly see from these photo's Jeanne bore precious little resemblance to Kim Novak, who portrayed her in a late 50's Bio-pic. About the only similarity is that they were both female.
Eagels made a few Silent films and a couple of talkies, before her untimely death in 1929. Including Monta Bell's MAN, WOMAN & SIN, with John Gilbert in 1927, which caused a senstion similar to Clarence Brown's FLESH AND DEVIL (1926) with Gilbert, and Greta Garbo. This film still exists in very good condition, as Warner's has near pristine prints. What I wouldn't give to see the film scored and to premier on TCM! Silent film historian Kevin Brownlow describes the movie as a Masterpiece.

*Jeanne Eagels considered among the most beautiful woman of her time, and the most tragic.*

*Jeanne Eagels, with a Sweet Heart Profile. This photo was probably taken around the same time She Starred opposite John Gilbert, in Monta Bell's MAN, WOMAN & SIN (1927). Jeanne would have just two years to live.*

*No this is not Country cutie Kelly Willis, though the two look astonishingly alike. It's Jeanne Eagels again with long Blonde hair.*

*Jeanne Eagles, Precious, Bewitching Innocence.*

Mike,
Here are some captures from THE MATING CALL with Evelyn Brent defintinitely not looking like a man.

-

*Corinne Griffith, from SEVEN WEEKS (1924)*

*Esther Ralston from AN AMERICAN VENUS (Paramount, 1926)*

*May McAvoy, with Ramon Novarro from BEN HUR (1925)*

Lynn,
Well, THE PAGAN has been shown on TCM, I think the last time it was on was in 2006. Everyone should put in a request. I have the film on DVD-R.
Anita Page has a few Silent's they run from time to time. SPEEDWAY (1929) with William Haines hasn't been aired in quite awhile though, Again, why not put in another request for that as well?
Here is very beautiful May McAvoy, and Ramon Novarro from Fred Niblo's Silent version of BEN HUR (1925)

I really struggled with this one a whole bunch. Corrine's upper arm looks all sunburned, I fear! Try as I might I could not fix that?
Well, allot of these I've gotten just recently, but I have several files with hundreds of stills, and portrait's on my slave drive. Many of them were on my previous PC going back a good six years.
This is the only colorized photo I have of Evelyn Brent. Alas it in no way does her justice. I will have to work on some others. She looks to be up to no good here! Brent was phenomal in films such as UNDERWORLD, THE LAST COMMAND, and THE MATING CALL. A powerful presence, and a top Paramount Star who is not nearly as well remembered today as she deserves to be.

*Typically Evil Evelyn Brent character. Undoubtedly She is ploting some sinister scheme! Bad Evelyn!*
-
Film_Fatale,
Besides Dorothy Janis, there is Anita Page, who I have not posted a colorized photo of yet. Ironically, Page also walked away from Hollywood! And Mickey Rooney was in several Silent movies, including ORCHIDS IN ERMINE (First National, 1927), with Colleen Moore!
Here is yet another great photo of Corrine Griffith. The Still is from an unknown film, perhaps SEVEN WEEKS (1924)? Historian's should be scouring the globe for more of Corinne's missing films. Only 10 of her movies are know to still exist, of those Ten, I have seen just Four to date. I am completely enraptured by this lady! She was magic!

*Precious Corinne Griffith in a dramatic still from another sadly Lost film.*
-
smokey15,
Yes, The last I knew Dorothy Janis was still living! What a career that she might have had! Correct she quit the movies and got married! If you are interested in seeing THE PAGAN, drop me a PM, or E-mail me.
Meantime here, is another Lovely Dovely. Esther Ralston from the lost 1926 Paramount feature AN AMERICAN VENUS. Also with Louise Brooks, and the Woman who was the current Miss. America at the time. I have forgotten her name, but in the trailer she looked great! Technicolor footage in this one too! Somebody find this movie! Man, how I would relish seeing it!

*Gorgeous Esther Ralston From AN AMERICAN VENUS ( Paramount, 1926). The footage this still was taken from was probably shot in 2-Strip Technicolor at the time.*

Sadly, all known surviving prints of THE DIVINE WOMAN were destroyed in the 1965 MGM vault fire. Along with the original negative.
Could be allot worse, All but 10 of Corrine Griffith's 60 plus films are considered lost! I would give my Eye-teeth for more of her films to be found. One of the most beautiful Woman ever to grace the screen.
Many of Colleen Moore's biggest films meantime, like THROUGH THE DARK, FLAMING YOUTH, NAUGHTY BUT NICE, and THE DESERT FLOWER ae lost or exist in only fragmentary form. FLAMING YOUTH is a major, major lost. Only one reel survives today. Yet in the late 60's this film was still around complete! The Museum that Colleen dedicated a pristine print to, did not take care of it! And the film has not been found to this day! Shocking!
How about Clara Bow, she made four features in 1928 at the very apex of her popularity. None are accounted for today! With respect, while I like Garbo, there where allot of other great Silent screen actresses besides her. You might find yourself just as 'Smitten" with some of those other ladies?
-
Johnbabe,
No, THE DIVINE LADY (1929) with Corinne Griffith, Not Garbo. These are two completly different movies. THE DIVINE WOMAN (1928) is mostly lost. While THE DIVINE LADY is one of the few of Corrine's films that has not been lost. I'd give anything for more of her films to be found!

*"Beautiful Corinne Griffth, Orchid Lady Of The Silent Screen."*

Nikkymo,
I agree the photo is fabulous. Although, I tried to fix the tint of her legs, the are a little to pink. Unfortunately, it couldn't be done.
-
Wendy,
Yes, Brent was great in THE MATING CALL and looked smokin' too! However, She was outshown by Renee Adoree in my estimation.
Dorothy Janis photo's seem to be very scare? How sad! I also need good pictures of Camillia Horn, who snuck on to my Top 10, but I have no photo's of her to post! Jetta Goudal is another lady I need, along with Vera Reynolds.
This is not a good photo of Evelyn Brent at all. Unfortunately, it is the only one that I had colorized. I can imagine Mike cringing! Her nose looks 20 miles long here! Trust me, She was much better looking than that!
-
Mike,
Yes, I can run off copies. Evelyn Brent is phonomenal in UNDERWORLD, THE LAST COMMAND, and THE MATING CALL. She was actually quite attractive, and could look most inticing. Her look was just different than allot of other ladies.
Hey, Mary Brian is a favorite of mine too! She is great in PETER PAN, BROWN OF HARVARD, and RUNNIN' WILD among others. Got any good photo's of Olive Bordon? I need some.

*Typically Evil Evelyn Brent character. Undoubtedly She is ploting some sinister scheme! Bad Evelyn!*
-
Mike,
Sure I would be up for some trades, but my Pre-code collection is somewhat limited. I do have some Nancy Caroll, and Alice White films. Maybe some early Jennette McDonald? If you want Silent's though I have got ton's that you may well be interested in? Do you like Evelyn Brent?
Next up, thanks to Johanna, The lady who ranked Second on my Most Beautiful Silent Actresses list. The Incomparable Dorothy Janis! Hard for anyone to compete with this lady! Simply gorgeous beyond belief!
Sadly, Janis made just four films before exiting the movies. Of those probably only one survives, but once you have seen that picture, who would ever forget Janis opposite Ramon Novarro in THE PAGAN (1929)! I certainly couldn't! Need some photos of her with long hair. Can anyone help out?

*Jaw-Dropping beauty, Dorothy Janis has to be one of the most astonishing looking ladies I have ever seen in films! What a vision!*

Mike,
A couple odd looking photo's of Camillia Horn, she does not look anything like those photo's in the movies I have seen like FAUST, and THE TEMPEST, She is extremely beautiful in those films. Got any Vilma Banky or Jetta Goudal?
Here's one of my favorites, Just to cute and Adorable. It's Colleen Moore!
*Colleen Moore "Bombshell" Photo!*
*Colleen Moore, Shhhh, It's a Secret!*
*Even when playing a less than, glamorous, or out right frumpy character, such as this broom girl, Colleen Moore's natural beauty was still readily apparent.*
*Colleen Moore looks precious here, with a Short Curly Bob.*
