smokey15,
Phooey! Give me the classic actresses of the 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's. Today most Woman look so fake, and exceedingly trashy as well! All that dark eye makeup and crap! Yuck! The glamour of old doesn't even exist!
And for the record, I'm a big Elvis fan, have been all my life, and really enjoy most of his movies. Much better than the beach comedies of the 60's that's for certain!

Johanna,
Ironically, Kevin Brownlow said the FAZIL was quote "No Good At All", mainly because Charles Farrell's character tries to hard to be Valentino here. However, when I saw the film, I found this movie surprisingly engaging. I just wish that I had a better copy. While the Vintage Movie-tone score is in-tact including the fabulous "Neapolitan Nights" theme song, the picture quality is truly dismal. What I wouldn't give for a nicely restored copy from Fox.
Greta Nissen as Ed tells me, was Howard Hughes first choice for HELL'S ANGEL'S. Not Jean Harlow. She was contracted as the lead in the Silent version, but after 2 years in production, Hughes fired her, and signed Harlow, as the picture went from a Silent to a talkie. Like Garbo this Greta was also Swedish, and her accent was likely a detriment, although Harlow was plumb awful in ANGEL'S herself attempting to sound British!

Awesome colorized production still of Ginger from GOLD DIGGERS of 1933. I can't take credit for this one. Someone else on GAOH colored this photo. They are much more precise than I am. My stuff always has minor defects where there is no color, bleeding of colors, and what have you. By contrast, this appears to be literaly flaw free! Magnificent!

Ed,
Yes, Isn't that a fantastic photo! I knew you would flip when you saw it!

Glad that you like the Esther Ralston photo. I have Ralston on my Top 10 Silent Screen beauties list, but she did not make the top 5. Will need to check where I placed her. Please understand, I did not mean to infer that I thought that you were one of the folks who seem to be intentionally burying my threads.
Now, here are a couple of wonderful portrait's that I just found last night of the Pixie Sweet Laura La Plante.

*Laura La Plante with Pearls Abound! This gal was just to Cute for Words!*

*Laura La Plante, giving you eye from across the room, with this come-hither over the shoulder glance!*

What? No one has mentioned THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON???
-
Err, so why is it that I suspect people of deliberately burying my threads???

MIke,
Well, I gotta admit Edwina Booth is some kind of a Looker! Wow-Wee!
All of the stuff you posted is great. I would love to have a copy of CAMEO KIRBY. The film is not complete missing about a reel and a half. The earliest film I have with Jean Arthur is King Vidor's WINE OF YOUTH (1924). I have a few films with Dorothy Mackaill including SHORE LEAVE Starring Richard Barthelmess.
What did you think of the so called "La Plante Nudes" by the way? I found a few others, if you want me to send them? Incidentally, Didn't you say something about June Collyer too? If so, I'm interested! Incidentally, here's elegant little Laura La Plante now, with Her clothes on! Works for me!

Ed,
That's definitely interesting about Greta Nissen. To me She looks better than Harlow, who never really did much for me at all. The Woman is really a stunner in FAZIL wonder what other titles of Her's are still around today?
Here is a fabulous photo of Esther Ralston, What a great dress!

*Oh My Lordy! Esther Ralston clearly ranks with the most gorgeous creatures of any era!*

Hey Ed!!!!!
This one is just for you! It's your Dream Girl, I believe? A super terrific photo of the ever radiant Bessie Love!!!!

*Bessie Love looks mighty lovely indeed in this great portrait. Displaying just a slight teasing glimpse of Lace, and a great big devastating smile!*
-
nosound,
Yes, I think I got the photo's, but i am not sure what file that I put them in? I will need to look them up. Thanks.
Meantime two more beautiful ladies, Esther Ralston, and Bessie Love.

Johanna,
Woof, Woof! Here's a true Knockout photo of Colleen Moore as a Harem beauty! Never seen this one before! Colleen looks simply amazing here. Just stunning! More than worth a Thrid "Woof" in-fact!!!

*Colleen Moore makes it virtually impossible to leave the Harem here! WoW!!!*

Ed,
I knew that only one Reel of FLAMING YOUTH is known to survive. I didn't know that the full-length film was lost by some incompetent Museum people in the late 60's. How awful!
What about THE PEFERCT FLAPPER, and NAUGHTY BUT NICE? Do either of those still exist? Sadly THE DESERT FLOWER (1925) is considered lost, but I am not sure about these other two titles? Remember when that guy that had some really obscure 1923 Colleen Moore title on sale on I-offer.com several months ago? I wish I could remember what it was? I know that I don't have it.
-
Ed,
I got a copy of Fairbanks MOLLYCODDLE several months ago from Scottman.
Poor little Colleen Moore has nothing that's been released by Kino except for THE BUSHER so far. Image, and Milestone have showed no apparent interest to date. Colleen Moore's movies have been sadly ignored by these people. Even a film like IRENE (1926) with it's surviving 2-Strip Technicolor footage has not seen an official release. Neither has King Vidor's THE SKY PILOT (1921). Maybe Flicker Alley will take note of this?
While many of Moore's films have been lost, there are enough that survive to work with, and give people a good taste of Colleen's diverse characters and infectious charm in her heyday. What I wouldn't give for nicely restored prints of TWINKLE TOES (1925), ORCHIDS AND ERMINE (1927), and of course LILAC TIME. The Sunrise Silent's DVD-R release of ELLA CINDERS (1926) is a very good quality print, which as you mentioned are not easy to find of her films.
LILAC TIME (First National, 1928), Is still owned by Warner's, and though there have been rumors of a new restoration for the past couple years now, I still have no firm details. For decades only poorly processed, and truncated 16 millimeter prints have circulated. Warner's should have a nice 35 millimeter fine grain master though. It's my understanding that the European release, which is slightly longer, still exists in very good condition.
As it was the big hit of this years San Francisco Silent film festival last month, With any luck we will get a TCM premier of HER WILD OAT soon. Did you ever hear anymore from the guy at the Vita-phone project concerning SYNTHETIC SIN, and WHY BE GOOD? Even if they didn't fit into the 2008 budget for restoration, I hope these films have at least been transfered to Safety-stock by now? Although I haven't heard anything.

*All American Girl Colleen Moore, As An English Lassie!*

Moore is still another still Cute Hat. Colleen played far more then just Flapper roles, in-fact, I don't think I have seen any of her films yet, where she portrayed the stereo-typical Flapper type character, that she is often believed to have been on screen. In reality she performed a wide variety of roles. Even a Geisha Girl!

johnbabe,
Magic Flowers cast a powerful spell of enchantment. The unforgettable first meeting of Felicitas, And Leo (Garbo, and Gilbert) from Clarence Brown's FLESH AND THE DEVIL (MGM, 1926)

Little Debbie,
Thanks for the photos. I don't think Jobyna is going to Swim in that outfit? The water doesn't look quite the right shade here. Need to fix that. The shoes are a mystery to me? A very unique ensemble though.
Ralston was Harold Lloyd's best leading Lady, and He had some very good ones with Bebe Daniels, Mildred Davis, Barbra Kent, and Constance Cumming's among others. But Harold's very best work is with Jobyna. Since this phot is from 1924, that was the same year she made both GIRL SHY, and HOT WATER with H L. Two of his finest features. GIRL SHY being one of the great Romantic comediies ever made, Silent or Sound.
I was fortunate to run across a bunch of really good photo's from FLESH AND DEVIL, and this is the first one that I have worked on so far. I wonder if anyone has a copy of the 1979 NBC Mini-series THE SILENT LOVERS, which was all about Gilbert and Garbo's torrid romance? I'd love to see it.
Only about 45 minutes of TWELVE MILES OUT is known to exist. Unless more footage pops up, we probably won't be seeing it on TCM. However, MAN, WOMAN & SIN with Jeanne Eagels, and THE COSSACKS are both complete, survive in very good condition, and they really need to resurrect these movies.

Jim,
It's Lupe Velez, not Lupe Valdez.. Veldez is the Columbian Coffee Guy. I have a couple of her Silent's Fairbanks THE GAUCHO (1927), and Chaney's WHERE EAST IS EAST (1929). Though she made several others. I also have a song dedicated to her still from the Silent period.

Mike,
I have SOULS FOR SALE (1923). Very good movie. A young Eleanor Boardman looks simply Smashing in this one! WINE OF YOUTH (1924) is probably the movie where she looks her very best though.
Ok, so you want Cheesecake? Well. here is a terrific Glamour shot of Betty Compson as a Sailor Sweetie! If you have not seen her in Von Sternberg's THE DOCKS OF NEW YORK (1928), Compson provides a strong argument in that picture to be ranked right up there among the best looking ladies of the Silent screen. Not to mention the fact that DOCKS, is truly a great movie, and also Co-Stars naughty Olga Baclanova!
*Flirty Betty Compson invites you to "Come Sail the Seven Seas with Her"! Or at any rate, at least the length of Her vast Swiming pool!!*
