strummer, Sounds pretty noteworthy to me! Anything with both Charles Farrell, and Delores Del Rio together is of definite interest.
-
strummer, I don't know why, but to me CAPTAIN SALVATION is the better movie. THE WIND is good, but not really among my favorites.

Cathy, I like the Mont Alto Orchestra score, and have this DVD. Though I must confess that I do not remember it all that well? The Davis arrangement, is the first one I think of when I hear this film mentioned by anyone. I first saw the Thames version of THE THIEF OF BAGDAD with Carl Davis score on PBS, back in 1982! Believe it or not, I still have the tape of the Original broadcast! I held on to it, not knowing if it could ever be replaced? Indeed it wasn't until just a couple years ago, that I finally found a laser-disc of this same version. It has not been released on official DVD. Yes, both Fairbanks, and Pickford were often involved in the Direction, and the Writing as well. They Produced their films, and wouldn't release anything until the highest standards were met. Fairbank's even used his two Middle names Elton Thomas frequently as a writer on screen. Pickford always said that no one ever really Directed Her. "Not even D. W. Griffith, or Cecil B. De Mille, ever really Directed Me"! In any event, Fairbanks and Pickford were both multi-talented people. They enjoyed allot of creative control, and very much Bossed their own Productions. SIEGFRIED is the first half of Fritz Lang's monumental Two-Part Epic DIE NIBELUNGEN Saga. The second half being KRIEMHILD'S REVENGE. The Kino DVD release is spectacular. The film is stunningly restored. The Musical score by Gottfried Nuppertz is fantastic! Riveting, and incredibly powerful! Few films can compare, in terms of shear spectacle! Cathy, The Image Entertainment DVD of THE THIEF OF BAGDAD has a Gaylord Carter Theater Organ score. The older VHS edition, and probably the Kino laser-disc, had the same score? The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra score, didn't pop up until just a few years ago. The Carl Davis score can only be found on the older HBO laser-disc, and VHS release. I do not know why it has not been offered on DVD? People often ask me if the Thames version is just Black and White? No, a wide spectrum of Color-Tinting is featured, and the print quality is about the same as the newer releases. Although, there is some very brief footage here and there on the newer Kino release, that is missing from the Thames BFI print. Message was edited by: gagman66

Cathy, Granted, THE THIEF OF BAGDAD is great. Especially with the Carl Davis score, if you can find it!? However, Fritz Lang's Dragon in SIEGFRIED, dramatically upstages the one seen the same year in the Fairbanks feature! Have you seen the documentary CINEMA EUROPE yet? They give you a pretty fair degree of insight into how THE DRAGON Sequence was filmed!
-
Cathy, No I haven't seen it before. Is this an MGM Silent, Warner Brothers, First National, or some other studio? If it's a Fox, or Paramount feature,TCM probably hasn't run it? Who is in this movie, and what is it about?

FlynnFanForever, Generally, Murna's NOSFERATU is shown during the month of October. It was each of the past few years. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA too. That being said, both films are readily accessible on commercial DVD. The best version of NOSFERATU is the Photo-play Productions edition, with the James Barnard score. You can purchase a copy directly from the BFI. As for PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, the two disc Ultimate Edition version from Milestone is the one to go with. It has the Photo-play Productions restoration of the 1929 re-release, with a Carl score. Plus an alternate track, and the original 1925 cut of the film, which is radically different, than the version most people are familiar with. Message was edited by: gagman66

lzcutter, Have you seen the recent Mary Pickford documentary produced for THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE SERIES on PBS? I haven't, but I just learned that it has been released on DVD. I am curious to see if this latest effort is superior to the MARY PICKFORD: A LIFE ON FILM Documentary from 1997, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg? I enjoyed that one, but never really felt that it was quite comprehensive enough as pertains to the films themselves. I am huge Pickford fan, and basically I feel Her films in general have been grossly under-evaluated. In my view, a fair number of them are vastly underrated.
-
strummer, Do you recall the name of the company that was offering this DVD-R for sale? I am very curious about this? Also do you know anything about "Sweetheart Films"? They have a couple three very rare Mary Pickford titles on DVD+R, that I would very much like to bid on. Especially, ROMANCE OF THE REDWOODS (1917), Directed by Cecil B. De Mille! If possible, I would like some reference as to the print quality first? Thanks.

strummer, Have you seen John Robinson's CAPTAIN SALVATION (1927), with Lars Hanson, Marceline Day, Pauline Stark, and Ernest Torrance?

Some caps from the TCM version of THE WHITE SISTER (1923)

strummer, I assure you know one else has ever banned me from a forum. The person in question claiming that she had "no choice but to Barr me", just is simply not the case! For the record, I was reinstated just once, not several times. Then I was booted all over again, over a very trivial mis-understanding at best, after a week or two! Which I sincerely apologized for! I freely admit, that I managed to sneak back onto the board using a different E-mail address and nick name a few times after that. You might consider this action as dishonest, but I was given no other alternative! I am truly saddened to learn that this lady's health issue's have worsened again. You must understand that I could not of known. I am automatically kicked out every time I try to enter the forum! I am not permitted even to visit as a guest? I'm sorry but that just isn't right! I wonder how you would feel it this same type of thing were to happen to you? Message was edited by: gagman66 -

Cathy, Yes, but "strummer" is new here and is not in my address book? I just can't specify "send to strummer" and it goes to him or her can I? At least I didn't think I could? Maybe I can? It never used to work that way? Anyway, my Private Message space is virtually depleted I fear. So I try to use it sparingly. Incidentally, I sent you a couple E-mail responses on Saturday I believe, but both where returned to me as undeliverable? I'm glad that some folks appreciate my being here. Thanks. -
strummer, Please note "The Dredster" who is currently on vacation and not around to defend himself, is a big Marie Prevost fan too! I think that you must have taken his comments out of context? They were not meant to be critical.

strummer, Please understand that I would not normally have said anything here. Unfortunately, The Private Message links are not currently active on this forum as far as I can tell? . Again it all comes down to perception. You automatically brand me as being at fault without knowing any of the real facts. Yes I was banned several times. All of them without provocation! I asked to be reinstated several times, but my messages were ignored. Last I knew the lady was in re-mission, and doing quite well.I wish her the best always. I just wish that she wasn't so overly judgmental and narrow minded of people who mean no harm. -

strummer, There is not need for this. Please do not mention me to her! Just want to say that I have never Bad-mouthed Her so to speak in any way! In-fact, I never even mentioned the Lady by Name! However, plenty of other people have, and they have not been nearly so reserved in their comments as myself! I have known the lady for years, going back to the old Harold Lloyd.com. On that board we seemed to get along just fine. You would be plenty frustrated too, if you tried for four years to see one of her programs, and came up completely empty! strummer, The 1915 version of OLD HEIDELBERG, that is the official title this time starred Wallace Reid, as Prince Karl Heinrich, and Dorothy Gish as Kathi. The film is very different than the Lubitsch version. The story is given a contemporary setting with the Great War Looming, and ponders rather or not the Kingdom of Karlsburg should join the Fight? You can find a segment from the earlier version on the Sunrise Silents DVD-R release of the Mary Miles Minter feature THE EYES OF JULIA DEEP (1918). As far as I know, the rest of the 1915 OLD HEIDELBERG is probably lost? It least that was my impression? If it still exists in it's entirety I would love to be able to see it sometime!

strummer, Actually, people have been banned here before too. Though it does not happen often, A few months back a number of people got barred for constant bickering on this board. I would love to be able to get my hands on "You Know Who's" version of THE WHITE SISTER, and even more so THE COSSACKS! To bad it will probably never happen! Meanwhile, I was able to round up a copy of the TCM France version of THE WHITE SISTER! I just got it on Monday, and I'm looking forward to seeing it! Have to say that I still do not understand why it has not been shown in this country yet though? I wonder if TCM has a near pristine print of Henry King's STELLA DALLAS (1925) buried deep in the vault someplace too? Please don't misunderstand, If people have a good reason to ban someone, I have no gripes. But She had no reason to ban me and many of my other friends on that board! Routinely editing members posts is not exactly what I might term as ethical either! Message was edited by: gagman66 -

Hey, I would dearly love to be able to log in to GoldenSilents believe me. Unfortunately, I was banned last year for no ligitamate reason what so ever! So Beware, because I am far from the only one who has gotten the boot over nothing from that forum! I tried for four years to obtain some of this lady's programs without success! I simply do not understand why the Woman won't at least offer the Public Domain titles that she has worked on up for sale? She did at one time apparently, but that was before I had first registered. -
Strummer, You are apparently new here? I was not picking on Marie Prevost over her weight at all. I have THE GODLESS GIRL by the way, and I think Marie as Mame pretty much steals the film away from Lina Basquette, and George Duryea! This movie is a Masterpiece! Definitely among De Mille's finest! I also have several of Marie Prevost's staring Silent's as well. I am a very big fan in-fact! If you read some of my other posts that should become abundantly clear.

Fred, I think that you must be referring to the HOUR OF SILENT'S program? These were feature films that's true. However, all of them were condensed down to just over 50 minutes in length. I have a few of these on DVD-R that Blackhawk offered years ago. Among them THE YANKEE CLIPPER with William Boyd. Does anyone know where I can find a full length version of this picture? Hey, Is anybody else having trouble getting the BEAU BRUMMEL clips from the Young Film Composers contest to play-back? I'm I doing something wrong? I have Flash-player already, and have installed and uninstalled it many times. It doesn't make any difference! None of the clips from the finalist's and the Grand Prize Winner posted, will play for me? What can I do? Is everybody else able to view the clips normally? I would really like to be able to see these clips!
-
Scottman, No, I have never heard the Gaylord Carter Wurlitzer score to LITTLE ANNIE ROONEY? I didn't even know that there was one! Is it good? The Blackhawk version has a William Perry Piano score, and it is excellent, as most of Perry's scores are. Unfortunately, like many of the Perry scores, it is somewhat muffled sounding. I just transferred this to DVD-R a few weeks ago. It turned out remarkably well considering the tape is nearly 30 years old! I would be very interested in seeing a copy of your laser-disc, especially if it's taken from the Mary Pickford Foundation? Who released it? Was it Image? How long have you had it? Maybe we can trade copies of these versions? Still waiting to hear from you? How are you coming along with some of the other stuff? Like De Mille's THE VOLGA BOATMAN, for example? Scottman, My old Blackhawk tape of LITTLE ANNIE ROONEY, which I have had since 1979, looks allot better than what TCM shows. It's the same Killiam Shows version, but it is Multi-tinted, and much sharper. The TCM print looks a good two generations removed from the Blackhawk edition, and it is just plain Black and White? Wonder what the story on this is? It appears that the Killiam's have been copied over, and over again, for companies such as Critics Choice and others? I think every print that I have ever seen of LITTLE ANNIE ROONEY is from the Blackhawk Collection in one way, or other? Even the current Terra Entertainment DVD acknowledges them! Although, I am assuming that The Mary Pickford Foundation has the best print material in existence? Will we ever see a fully restored version on DVD from Milestone? Factotum, Paul Killiam, and Don Mallkames, are two relatively un-sung heroes when it comes to Silent film preservation. So give them some credit! Those guys saved a number of rare films from total oblivion! Including such movies as John Barrymore's THE BELOVED ROGUE, and IT with Clara Bow! Believe it or not, United Artist's and Paramount Pictures respectively, literally tossed those films away during the 1950's! Fortunately, Killiam and Malkames came to the rescue!

drednm, OK, I have just seen this one. I simply must say that I found it to be a very charming little production indeed! Mercy me, there's that "Naughty Flirt", ALICE WHITE, BATHING STARK NAKED IN A STORE WINDOW!!! Whoops, She's got on a One-piece! Sure didn't look like it until she got out of the Tub??? I wonder??? Nevertheless, the girl is definitely attracting quite a crowd of on-lookers! Yes, Sir-ree! Alice is a slinky blonde Honeybun, Helen Clark. She's a real Peach, whom the fella's are just lining up around the block to Pinch! A dainty, but very shapely little thing, and the men seem to have developed a rather nasty habit of starting brawls over her where ever she goes! Lloyd Hughes is Bill Howard a Drop Dead Handsome Marine, who falls for The Girl in a big way. Nita Edwards (Marie Prevost), is Helen's Hefty wise-cracking best friend. My goodness the lady has ballooned up here a little though hasn't she? No matter, Bill's lanky Gob Pal Hank Smith (Ray Cooke), is smitten with her just the same! Eventually, Bill pops the question, just before heading back out to sea, and Helen becomes his betrothed. Unbeknownst to Bill, wealthy Heel Hendricks (Kenneth Thompson), had spotted Helen at a dance earlier. Vowing to his friends, that she would be his next conquest! When Bill returns on Leave, He finds Helen playing host to Hendricks's! What? This is very same guy he'd already exchanged a few blows with when they first met! Bill is outraged, and Helen returns his ring! Later, here's Helen again, running around in a very skimpy dress that leaves precious little to the imagination on the Millionaires yacht! He certainly doesn't need any encouragement. He's a Cad who's only interested in one thing, and it's not tying the knot! Though He doesn't want the girl to know!! Heh, Heh! The sneaky devil! Nita is concerned, and get's the low down on Hendricks. Sure enough the creep is already married! Nita races to Bill who is in-different at first, but soon decides that Hendricks's deserves a thrashing! Meanwhile Helen discovers the truth about the Millionaire, and boy, oh boy, all heck is about to break lose! Pretty nice print, with few artifacts, and this version has a wonderful vintage score that complemented virtually every scene almost perfectly! In-fact, at first I thought it was the original Western Electric track! Though, as the film progressed it became fairly obvious that the music had been dubbed in later on. I got a big kick out of this one! Message was edited by: gagman66

lzcutter, Well, it's certainly good to know that they are at least attempting to resolve the issue. Thanks again for clearing this matter up. I had not known about this problem before. Hopefully they will get things back to normal soon?
