I was lucky enough to get THE RED LILY, in it's entirety on DVD-R! I will be making up a full program for it soon. I would be happy to provide anyone who might interested with a copy. I also have THE PAGAN (1929), with Ramon Novarro, Renee Adoree, and beautiful Dorothy Janis, for those of you who might be looking for that title. This program combined with WHITE SHADOWS ON THE SOUTH SEAS (1928), is already fully authored!
-
Russianlit, Please note, I have THE MATING CALL (1928), and THE RACKET (1928), on DVD-R. The quality is extremely good. This is a full program with menu, and thumbs. I would be happy to provide you with a copy! Let me know if you would be interested? Hope to hear from you soon.

Habersack, Actually, the print of ORPHANS OF THE STORM (1921) that TCM routinely airs is the old Killiam Shows edition produced clear back in 1970! An Epic period film like this, demands and certainly benefits from an Orchestral score. I am a big fan of William Perry's Piano scores, but those old mono audio tracks are in dire need of re-mastering. I keep waiting for TCM to run another version, of this film but this has yet to happen. Despite the fact that better prints, and scores have since been released? Apparently, the Killiam restoration is all TCM has the rights to broadcast? The biggest problem with the Killiam print is the accelerated projection speed! Much of it seems to just race on by! My Image DVD release, contains a substantial amount of additional footage from this movies that has since been found, that is not in the old Killiam print! I have not seen the latest Kino DVD version, which is newer than the Image one, and is supposed to have the best picture quality of any edition produced for DVD, so far to date.

At last, I finally got to see Frank Borzage's Silent Masterpiece SEVENTH HEAVEN (1927), yesterday! It was incredible! This was a tinted print, and retaining the original vintage movie tone score! Including the original composition from the film that became a very popular standard of the day the memorable "My Diane"! Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell, are both wonderful! A perfect pairing on screen! In-fact Gaynor for a few years, was according to "Time Was", reputedly reigned as the biggest star in Hollywood! How many folks know that today?Generally, it's Garbo, Gilbert, or Clara Bow that is referenced as the top star of the late 1920's these days. Frank Borzage, a man who is now barely a footnote in Hollywood history, was a brilliant Director! A man of expressive vision. His work it seems has been largely forgotten? This picture runs a full gauntlet of human emotions, powerfully evoked! Wow! what a remarkable viewing experience? How sad that this film's standing has been tarnished by it's sheer lack of availability over the past couple decades! SEVENTH HEAVEN (1927), clearly lives up to it's age old reputation, as one of the greatest silent films of the 1920's! It's tragic that it has been so rarely seen in recent years! Something must be done to correct this matter soon! I was fortunate enough to have acquired this DVD-R recording, from a private collector. Overall the quality was still pretty good. I have waited over 20 years to see this movie. Two the best of my knowlegde, this picture has never been aired on Fox Movie Channal, let alone TCM? Rumor has it that this film is going to be released by Fox on official DVD one of these days! That's great, and I sure hope that it does happen soon! However, I have been hearing this same thing for some three years now! I don't even know for sure if the picture is being restored? If not Fox, than what is the trouble? I has to be done, and with all speed! John Ford's 1928 feature FOUR SONS, is another outstanding film eroding with time stashed away in the Fox Library someplace that needs their wholehearted attention! As does WHAT PRICE GLORY? (1926), STREET ANGEL (1928), and so many others! How depressing!

FILMS NEEDED TO BE RESTORED AND SCREENED AGAIN
gagman66 replied to ganavon1's topic in Your Favorites
ganavon1, Very good choice. Sad to say that I missed most of this movie when it ran on TCM several months ago. The print as shown, was excellent quality though. This is just for starters here, but the following major Silent's, definitely need re-mastering with today?s latest technology in order to restore them to their original glory! I sure hope that it happens before it is to late! WHAT PRICE GLORY? (Fox, 1926). SEVENTH HEAVEN (Fox, 1927). STREET ANGEL (Fox, 1927). WINGS (Paramount, 1927). MAN TRAP (Paramount, 1926) CHILDREN OF DIVORCE (Paramount, 1927). OLD HEIDELBERG (MGM, 1927). THE DOCKS OF NEW YORK (Paramount, 1928). FOUR SONS (Fox, 1928). THE WIND (MGM, 1928). LILAC TIME (First National, 1928). -
Willing To Exchange THE KING OF KINGS for MANSLAUGHTER/THE CHEAT on DVD
gagman66 replied to bonyoldrajah's topic in Silent
bonyoldrajah, Hello, I have THE CHEAT/CARMEN DVD release. I do not have MANSLAUGHTER though. I already have the Two disc set of THE KING OF KINGS. I would be interested to see what you have that I do not though? Maybe I could trade you some of my own programs, for something in you collection? Most of my DVD-R's, are every bit as good a quality, if not better quality, than allot of your commercial DVD Silent releases are! I am looking for a copy of John Ford's THE IRON HORSE (1924), with George O'Brien and Madge Bellemy. The Thames version was released on DVD in the United Kingdom, in Pal format. It has never been released in the United States! D. W. Griffith's HEARTS OF THE WORLD (1918), with Lillian Gish, is another title that I need. My recording got erased before I could transfer it to DVD-R! At present, I do not currently own a copy of WAY DOWN EAST (1920) either. Several years ago, AMC ran THE LITTLE AMERICAN (1918), with Mary Pickford, about the sinking of the Lusitania. Unfortunately, I missed it! I have been looking for a copy ever since! Even though I have a very large number of Silent's, I'm always looking for more elusive titles! I still need a bunch of of other pictures, and maybe you could help me out? -
Sherylshanno, Please note, THE SCARLET LETTER (1926), most likely won?t be, and doesn't really need to run on TCM again, any time soon! The last time I saw it run before last month was back in 2000! That?s OK though, because you can get a top flight copy straight from me if you wish! I just completed an awesome looking DVD-R program of this picture a couple weeks, or so ago! Huge menu, with some 50 thumb's, and Tinted background stills! It will blow you away! Plus you will get THE SHAMROCK HANDICAP (1924), with Janet Gaynor, as well! Both films are complete on the same disc! The quality is superb! Please feel free to contact me direct, at the link provided here in if you are interested? Hope to hear from you soon!
-
drummerof, Yes, I am interested if it will let me see the entire ending. Besides it is just a great movie. drummerof Yes, you will see the entire movie! You can contact me direct, at the link provided herein. Hope to hear from you soon! I 'm convinced that I have about as many Silent films, as your likely to find almost anywhere! About 70% or more of those titles, I have already authored to DVD-R! So let me know what else you may be looking for, and I may very well be able to accomadate you?

Rex Ingram's THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCYLPSE (1921) is a truly great motion picture! It has not been released on official DVD yet. However, I have a high quality DVD-R program which I designed, of this film with a 17 page menu! Perhaps you would be interested in a copy? Sadly, Valentino never made a single talkie. He died in 1926!

Dear Summer, You are describing one of the greatest comedies of the entire silent era! The picture is H L's masterwork of charm and mirth, GIRL SHY (1924). I am pleased to say this outstanding film is now available on official DVD! The movie was included along with Harold's other Ten excellent Silent features in the recently released 7 disc, (three are double sided), New-Line Entertainment Box set THE HAROLD LLOYD COMEDY COLLECTION. This superb set, is on sale right now! Buy it! You will most definitely not be disappointed!
-
Wow, that is indeed surprising, and unexpected news! I am very happy to hear something is finally being done with the Paramount Silent's library. However, I am somewhat skeptical of how good the presentation will be? I hope the film will be re-mastered, and given an appropriate musical score? Where did you read about this, by the way? Were any additional details provided?

Interestingly enough, the opening sequence featuring Mary Magdalene, was also filmed and originally released in Technicolor as well. For some reason the sound re-edit does not present the same take, and it was changed to black and white? The restored 1927 release found on the Criterion two-disc set, does showcase the Technicolor version of this scene once again! So lucky for us, it still exist?s! Some footage however, has been lost "Jesus Entering The Gates of Jerusalem", or ?The Palm Sunday? sequence, sadly is missing from all surviving prints of this film. I only wish Paramount would re-store De Mille's original 1923 version of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS while this can still be done! That landmark Silent should be made available on DVD. It has rarely been shown on Television, at least in the United States, last airing on AMC in 1996, I believe? Frustratingly, I misssed it then, and still have not seen this film anywhere else!
-
Please note, Actually, the brilliant musical score to THE KING OF KINGS that you allude to, or at least as aired on TCM, is the Vintage Hugo Riesenfeld arrangement from the 1928 re-issue. I have seen this film with two other scores, and the vintage score is vastly superior to the two recent efforts by Donald Sousin, and Timothy J. Tikker. I did not much care for either of them. Fortunately, A definitive DVD is available from Criterion that contains all three scores, plus the newly restored 1927 original release of the film. This runs about 40 minutes longer, than the shortened 1928, cut. I like the film even better in it's entirety. I only wish the vintage score was found throughout.
-
Melly, Note, I have Ernst Lubitsch's LADY WINDERMERE'S FAN (1925), on DVD-R. It is available on true DVD, as part of the second TREASURE'S FROM THE AMERICAN FILM ARCHIVES Box set collection. The print they used was outstanding quality. This is a delightful film. Actually TCM ran this movie about a year ago, I have not seen it shown again, since that time.

path40a, SEVENTH HEAVEN (1927), is a Fox picture, and despite rumors of a DVD release over the past few years, this has yet to happen? I have never seen this picture, and it is frustratingly difficult to come by! WINGS (1927), was a Paramount release, and sadly it has yet to be issued on official DVD. However, I have made up an excellent DVD-R program of this picture, including 20 pages of Thumbnails and back ground stills, made from the earlier laser-disc release! I believe THE LAST COMMAND (1928) is available on DVD, from some one? This is another movie I have not seen to date. Happy to say, one of the best silent's I have ever seen THE GARDEN OF EDEN (1928), with CORRINE GRIFFITH and CHARLES RAY, has been released on DVD in a wonderful edition from Flicker Ally! Be sure to check this one out! Make certain it is the Flicker Ally version though. Here is a recent post of mine, from a thread on the Harold Lloyd Forum discussing various silent's, and stars, who's work I hope to see on DVD before long now. I didn't try to list everything. MGM has some major titles that are not mentioned here. "Well, these are mostly not comedies, but there are plenty of other Silent films, I sure hope to see released on DVD sometime! Here is a short list of some of them!" From MGM: (Now Sony, or Time-Warner.) How about possible Box-set's of John Gilbert, Ramon Novarro, and Marion Davies best work, plus more Silent Garbo, and Silent Crawford. Add in William Haines too! Here is a great potential "KING VIDOR SILENT'S" Set: 1.THE BIG PARADE (1925) 2. LE BOHEME (1926) 3. THE PATSY (1928 4. SHOW PEOPLE (1928) 5. THE CROWD (1928) From Paramount: (Among others.) 1. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1923) Directed By Cecil B. Demille. 2. THE COVERED WAGON (1923) 3. STAGE STRUCK (1925) In two Strip Technicolor, Starring Gloria Swanson 5. OLD IRON SIDES (1926) 6. MAN TRAP (1926) 7. CHILDREN OF DIVORCE (1927), Starring Clara Bow, and Gary Cooper. 8. BEAU GESTE (1926) Starring Ronald Coleman. 9. WINGS (1927) 10. LOVE'S OF SONYA (1927) 11. THE DOCK'S OF NEW YORK (1928). Directed Jose' Von Sternberg. Howard Hughes produced Paramount Silent's: (Recently restored by TCM, and Flicker Ally!) THREE ARABIAN KNIGHTS (1927), Directed By Lewis Milestone With William Boyd, and Merry Astor. THE RACKET (1928) Directed By Lewis Milestone. With Thomas Meighan, and Marie Provost. THE MATING CALL (1928), Directed By James Cruz. With Thomas Meighan, Renee Adoree, and Evelyn Brent. Note: I put together an awesome looking DVD-R program myself, of THE RACKET/THE MATING CALL, for anyone who might be interested? These are superb films. From Fox: (Among others.) 1.THE IRON HORSE (1924) Directed By John Ford 2. WHAT PRICE GLORY (1926) Directed By Raoul Walsh 3. THE BLUE EAGLE (1925) Directed By John Ford, Janet Gaynor. 4. SEVENTH HEAVEN (1927) 5. OLD SAN FRANCISCO (1927) 6. FOUR SONS (1928) Directed By John Ford 8. NOAH'S ARK (1928) 9. Any and all, of the surviving Fox westerns starring the great TOM MIX! 10. Other movies Starring DELORES COSTELLO! From First National: A COLLEEN MOORE retrospective, of existing works. Especially, ELLA CINDERS (1926) LILAC TIME (1928), Hopefully, with it's original release track still in-tact? Miscellaneous, I can't think what studio released THE SEA HAWK (1924), but there is another title that clearly deserves some consideration! Wasn't it the highest grossing movie of that year? Plus more, and more CORRINE GRIFFITH! Ah, did I mention more of CORRINE GRIFFITH?

Unfortunately, this may be new federal law coming into play people? Thus forcing TCM to comply? Yes it?s true, by all appearances the entire concept was designed almost exclusively to discourage video pirates! However, if this is a new law, it is one of the most asinine political decisions in the history of this country! So, blame Congress, and The FCC, for their unrelenting stupidity! All of these endless bugs are so totally unnesscary! A couple, three station identification?s is fine during a broadcast, and I have no problem with it. Will someone please take the time to explain to me why this is not sufficient enough? These constant ?station bugs? have ultimately ruined all of Television! They have certainly not improved upon it, in anyway! I waited years for TCM to show LE BOHEME (1926). When it airs this Sunday, it looks as if my recording, is going to contain that revamped TCM emblem in the right hand corner, rather I like it or not? Most depressing! Hope TCM is considering a John Gilbert DVD set soon, and that this film is on it? Wait a second KING KONG is over, and the logo is gone now! Although, it will probably pop up again as soon as the next feature begins?
-
Enough Already! Hey Leo, "GO SOAK YOUR HEAD!" The long overdue Harold Lloyd box set is getting absolutely rave reviews, virtually across the board fella! Just as I predicted, some time ago that it would! So you have to come in here, and make your little snide remarks, like some sick Jerk, now don't yah? The second I saw your name I knew it was some kind of a put-down! By the way, just in case I forget to tell you pal, and please try to comprehend what I'm saying now "GO SOAK YOUR HEAD!"
-
Ernst Lubitsch, THE PATRIOT (1929), Starring Emil Jennings, is sadly a lost film. It was a Paramount production. There is no record of the picture after 1948! It just simply vanished, less than 20's years after it's release! This is among the most highly sought after works of the entire silent era!
-
I must agree, this excellet movie is probably my favorite of all Bud and Lou's films too! For those who did not know, it is avaliable on official DVD from Universal! THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES (1946), was included as part of THE BEST OF ABBOTT and COSTELLO VOLUME 2. Which contains eight movies, on two Double-sided, dual layered disc's. I'm not a big fan of Double-sided DVD's! They can frequently prove to have defects, or at the very least stracth easily! You have to be carefull when handeling them! This format is used mainly just to keep the price down, and it has. These collections are very reasonably priced, and are easily afordable! I think I paid just $16.00 for mine? That's pretty amazing, when your talking eight full length features comedies!
-
Everyone, Please note, I have this highly coveted two-reeler, full length, combined with the feature comedy EXIT SMILING (1926), starring Beatrice Lillie, and Jack Pickford, and scored by the late Linda Martinez on the same DVD-R program. The quality is extremely good! Anyone here, who might be interested in a copy please feel free to contact me at bluetiger@frontiernet.net. Hope to hear from you soon!

Izcutter, Part of the problem is that the base prints are just not the same! The Thames print of SPEEDY for example, is not the same one stored in the UCLA vault at all, which the official Trust restoration was made from. Rather it was a UK release print leased to the BFI (British Film Institute) by the Lloyd Trust in the late 1980's! At the time that Kevin Brownlow and David Gill were working on the documentary HAROLD LLOYD THE THIRD GENIUS. (Which was completed in early 1989). The 1992 Thames/BFI print, contains some brief footage not found in the 2001 UCLA restoration! Also the opening and closing credits are of a completely different design and running time! Despite what Annette Lloyd had to say, when TCM aired the New-Line edition of SAFETY LAST! (1923), in late September, it was definitely not shown in perfect synchronization with Carl Davis 1989 score at that time! Any and all gripes aside, I am very happy that this long overdue set is finally reaching the market today. I bought it off Ebay two weeks ago! Assured by the seller, I would receive my copy at the same time that the retailers did! So far, I have not even gotten any confirmation that the package has even been shipped yet? Hopefully, it has been? God willing, I will have it in my anxious little mitts by the end of this week?
-
Yancy, You may be able to hear the commentary by hitting the SAP button, (Second Audio Program), on you remote control? Not real sure? Yes, the scores will be the same on as on TCM, hopefully in a little better synchronization? Some of the features will contain alternate Wurlitzer scores preformed by the late Gaylord Carter. The Carl Davis Orchestral scores for SAFETY LAST (1923), THE KID BROTHER (1927) and SPEEDY (1928), were all adapted from the Thames/Photoplay Productions editions produced between 1989-1992. The Lloyd Trust decided to retain those scores when thy commissioned new film-to video transfers at UCLA in 2002. Unfortunately, however, these scores were adapted often dreadfully out of sync with the action! Not precisely timed as they had been in the earlier Thames originals! The Trust had claimed that the problem would be rectified? I saw little evidence of this though when TCM aired the New-Line edition of SAFETY LAST for the first time last month? I did see some improvement at times, from the prints TCM had been running since 2002. I don't think presenting the Carl Davis scores in perfect synchronization was a high priority for New-Line? They likely felt most people had never seen the earlier Thames versions, and thus would never notice the difference anyway! For those of us like myself, who are familiar with those editions though, this is frustrating! Even more distressing is the three Davis scores are abruptly cut off way before the orchestration ends! The Thames editions where these scores originated, ran clear through to the final note! I can scarily believe that this anomaly was not taken care of, for the official DVD release! I was confident that it would be! Fortunately, there should be no such concerns with Robert Israel's scoring on the rest of the silent shorts and features! I must admit, I was slightly disappointed that the excellent Thames Jim Parker score for GIRL SHY (1924), and Adrian Johnston's equally wonderful Thames effort for HOT WATER (1924), were not retained by the Trust and thus will not be included in the DVD package. Though both versions of these two films have been shown on TCM before!
-
I am rather depressed! This is the second time TCM has aired a decidedly slow moving, (wrong projection speed), moldy, looking old print of this movie! Much better prints do in-fact exist, believe me! Several years ago, AMC showed a color-tinted, virtually pristine looking edition of THE LODGER (1927), and a friend of mine over sea's, has told me a very good print has aired in the UK! A print which is likely owned by the BFI (British Film Institute).Apparently, TCM can not get it's hands on that print, as the broadcast rights must be tied up by someone else? Very disappointing, to say the least! Oh, well at least TCM is able to air the finest prints available of both NOSFERATU (1922), and Lon Chaney's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925). This was not always the case! Never the less, I sincerely do hope sometime this other matter is finally cleared up?
-
Why on earth are we complaining about LA BOHEME (1926), being scheduled here? I'm rejoicing myself, and very much looking forward to the broadcast! For those of you have claimed to have seen LA BOHEME on TCM before, quote "dozen's of times", when the heck was this? Since some of you have apparently seen the TCM version, what kind of a score does have? Is it orchestral? Does anyone know the composer? Now look people, understand that I have had TCM since May 1 of 1999! That's quite awhile! I have missed very few silent's aired, and have NEVER, I repeat NEVER once seen this movie! So thank you so very much TCM, for finally scheduling it! Now if I could just persuade you to run in turn, the rarely seen Thames restoration of LILAC TIME (1928), starring Colleen Moore, and Gary Cooper, sometime soon again? Boy, would you have one happy viewer! I'm sure many other fans would love to see this picture shown as well!
-
Featio, I wish WINGS (1927) were available on official DVD, but it is not! I?m fortunate enough to have a DVD-R program of this picture, I authored from Laser-disc. However, A proper restoration by today?s standard?s, has apparently yet to be under-taken? The film looks OK, but could certainly use some work. For the record, the Thames version of IT (1927) with Carl Davis score, has been shown on TCM before. It has been quite awhile, since it last aired though. I think the Image DVD, was just released earlier this year? In any case, it has not been on the market long. Speaking of Clara Bow, I would really like to see DANCING MOTHERS (1926), and MAN TRAP (1926). These films never run on television anywhere! They have not been released on DVD either? Same with ?CHILDREN OF DIVORCE (1927), as well. The films still exist, intact as far as I?m aware? Paramount still own?s the copyrights, I believe? So, let's see them, once and again, alright?! That studio in particular, get?s my goat for sitting on these titles, and dozens of other silent?s for decades! Epic films such as Demille?s original 1923 production of THE TEN COMMANDMENT?S, THE COVERED WAGON (1923), and OLD IRON SIDES (1926), for example, may never see a commercial DVD release! What a travesty!
