  3. ugaarte,

Whoops, sorry I forgot to mention your being sic. Glad you are well now too. I've had a better Winter this year so far. haven't been sick nearly as much as {font:Arial}usual. Still don't feel good though.

Another Marion Davies cover painting I hadn't seen before. From the March 1924 Issue of Cinema Art. I think the outfit pictured, which I have seen in stills is from YOLANDA (1924). This is not a lost film, but I have never seen it before.

  4. ugaarte,

Nice to have you back here. There is a much better Pola Negri still in the other thread. You might want to go back several pages in both of these. You missed allot of Holiday releated photos.

Here is another Marion Davies Photoplay cover I do not remember seeing before. Plus several other interesting Davies items.

    > For the Best American film of 1927, I have to go with 7th HEAVEN. And considering it won 3 Academy Awards Two more than WINGS or SUNRISE, you can make a pretty strong case for it beiong the best. FLESH AND DEVIL was released in late '26, so that leaves that one out.

Road Shows were playing in 1926, but it wasn't seen allot of places until at least the late Spring of 1927. That being said Photoplay Magazine readers voted BEAU GESTE the Best film of 1926, and it was awarded the prestigious Photoplay Medal of Honor for that year. For 1927, 7TH HEAVEN won the award. I gotta admit THE KING OF KINGS is also a very strong contender at it's Road show length.

  6. I prefer the Silent version. The sound remake from the late 50's doesn't have the same Sweetness to it. Seems much harsher. And to literal, lacking the simplicity. The added color and dialogue didn't result in a better film. The original Silent was allot more touching. I was glad to see both of these shown on TCM.

I think TCM has played all of the OZU Silents that Criterion released on DVD not. So maybe it is a good sign that where with other Silent Box set's where TCM has only aired one or two films we will be seeing those neglected so far, sometime in the future.

  7. Here is the full story from my good friend Christine Letux in Paris:

Regarding the quote of Herrmann's Vertigo, I can shed a little light about it. This is a quote from Film Score Monthly:

"One such losing battle was the cue “My Suicide,” written to accompany the climax of the film in which George hits rock bottom. The final cut of the film was finished three weeks prior to the last recording date during the first week of April, as Bource was still trying to finish the cue. But “because the priority was to finish everything for Cannes [in May|http://forums.tcm.com/], Michel needed to present [the finished film|http://forums.tcm.com/] to the producers as soon as possible to reassure them of a project difficult to sell without music.” The climactic scene had been temped with Herrmann’s love theme from Vertigo for three months, “and every composer knows what that means,” says Bource. “Generally, you are condemned.” Vertigo remains in the final cut of the film, but Bource insists “Michel didn’t replace ‘My Suicide’ with Herrmann’s love theme. When the DVD comes out, you can put my music on that sequence.” Bource completed the cue on Hazanavicius’ birthday and dedicated it to him, “but we didn’t speak to each other during the last month. Why? Everything is in the title,” he adds, winking."

  8. Bronxi,

Don't be silly. No need to apologize. Feel free to post and comment on anything as much as you want. This was not even my thread. It belonged to Karin (Whistling Gypsy) I think? haven't seen her around in many months. Here is another Constance Bennett still I hadn't seen before. Probably from another lost film.

*Constance Bennett and Edmund Lowe-"Ravished Angel!"*

  9. How about this? Painted Lobby-card for a Zane Gray Western with a young Constance Bennett. Leading man Owen Moore (the former Mr. Mary Pickford), and yes Tom Moore's Brother, seems to have stolen William S. Hart's nose and profile Lock, Stock and Barrel? What's up with that? Bennett much like Louise Brooks with her arresting beauty was touted as the next big thing, but never really caught on until the Talkies started gaining momentum. After making several films in 1924 and 1925 she returned to the Stage until 1929.

  10. Wendy,

I find Marceline Day to be extremely underrated. she was a talented actress and she was very beautiful. Haven't seen as much of her Sister Alice, but she was pretty too.

Check that, actually, the film is called THE ROAD TO ROMANCE from 1927. However, Marecline Day was also in A CERTAIN YOUNG MAN witch Starred Ramon and Renee Adoree. So I'm not sure which movie the shot is from? There is a still code, but I don't know how to use it.

  11. Wendy,

It is Ramon Novarro and Marceline Day. Some reels were found from this movie either Russia or New-Zealand a few years back. I don't remeber which one. I know the title of the picture has "Love" in it someplace. Can't be that difficult to figure out.

  12. Wendy,

Here is a still from a lost film I have forgotten the name of. I'll need to look up the title. I think a couple reels were discovered just recently. I thought you would be interested in it for the two Stars. 13. Wendy,

Glad you like the pic. I was going to rename it something more exotic than just plain "Silken Gown" but I forgot what I intended to change it do before I could do so. The Colleen Moore still with James Hall and Mama from SMILING IRISH EYES, is my new {font:Arial}Aviator{font} on TCM CFU. I'll work on your Johnny Mack Brown sometime.

No, there is no need to start another thread. Did you watch the WINGS, and early Pola Negri Box-set Trailers? With the acclaim and awards that THE ARTIST is winning, maybe it will compell the major studios to get more of there long awaited Silents out on DVD and Blu-ray? Especially THE BIG PARADE, and BEAU GESTE. Let's hope so anyway.

  14. This is big news! Hopefully with the success of THE ARTIST and HUGO it will get more people into Silent films who have overlooked them. And just as importantly get more of the long awaited major titles on DVD and Blu-ray such as THE BIG PARADE, and the 1926 BEAU GESTE with Ronald Colman.

Say, what is the hold up Warner's? Paramount is finally releasing WINGS next week. Now where are THE BIG PARADE, A WOMAN OF AFFAIRS, OLD HEIDELBERG, ANNIE LAURIE, THE CROWD, THE WIND, and SHOW PEOPLE, Etc. Not to mention THE SEA BEAST, THE PATENT LEATHER KID, and LILAC TIME. I have waited 8 years to see the 2004 restoration of THE BIG PARADE debut on TCM or on DVD, and now Blu-ray.

  15. It might be difficult to find a film where there is a writing credit for TCM to run. And that they have the rights to show. She said that several films she wrote the scripts to were credited to other people. Unless, she explains which ones they were in her recent book?

  16. I'm back from my adoration hour. Thanks for the furry of posts, but now the Pola Negri photo is burried. Speaking of which here is a link to the trailer for her new Box set.

    http://www.brightshiningcity.com/store.html

Speaking of Trailers. Well here it is. The first official Blu-ray trailer for *WINGS* from Paramount. I searched for the trailer the other day and came up with nothing. But Mike Gebert was able to find it. So my thanks to him.

Hmm, It's pretty difficult to tell much of anything from the contents of this trailer. I assume it's full aspect ratio, even if the trailer has postage stamp size images. Don't see where the overall image is significantly improved over the largely unseen Photoplay Productions version personally. That comparison is slightly ridiculous, because it's not the Photoplay transfer they are judging it against.

  17. Wendy,

The one I thought was Jean Hersholt is actually Lawrence Tibbett. Who I did not realize was a Movie Star? The one I believed to be Chaney, believe it or not is in-fact Wallace Berry? So why does he look so much like Lon here? No it isn't Mary Astor I guess, but haven't figured that one out yet.

Please check the other thread. I uploaded several new photos last night. Wasn't aware that I had gotten a duplicate post untill several days later.

  18. ohwell.gifHere are more details about the RAMONA project just posted a few days ago. This also mentions *ROSE OF THE GOLDEN WEST (1927*) with Mary Astor and Gilbert Roland. The materials to which are at the present time still in Prague. I have also included a link to an interesting interview piece with George Willie chief of the Nitrate film division at the Library of Congress. He says some surprisingly encouraging things.

    *Posted by HughMN,*

*"The RAMONA (1928) story is this.*

*In 2009 professor researching the story of Ramona viewed the lone print at NFA in Prague. By coincidence, about six months later in 2010, I visited Prague with another academic, professor Dydia DeLyser for the same purpose. The first professor, Joanna Hearne wrote to the Library of Congress about the print. Later I canvassed several archives about a possible restoration of the film, and Mike Mashon at the Library of Congress indicated that he was willing to make it a priority, if a transfer of the print from Prague to LoC could be arranged. It took us several months, working with both Mike and the staff at Narodni Filmovy Archiv to coordinate this shipment, but it was finally done, and the print arrived in the US at the beginning of November.*

*By coincidence, I should mention that last summer, in 2011, I had the opportunity to return to NFA in Prague, and at that time I viewed several interesting prints, including ROSE OF THE GOLD WEST, which has also been mentioned in this thread. ROSE OF THE GOLD WEST is in very good shape. It has been preserved by NFA (with Czech titles, of course) and they have a dupe negative and an access print... so it is not in danger of deteriorating anytime soon. Nevertheless, of course, it would be very nice to get it back here to the USA.*

*I was recently informed that the director of NFA has been removed, and a new director is due to be appointed this year. NFA has experienced significant funding cuts in the last years, and while not as severe as that experienced by some similar institutions in other countries, they have no money to do additional preservation work on nitrate prints of US-made films. Time will tell how friendly and open the new director will be."*

  19. Wendy,

Here's an awesome still of the luminous Pola Negri at her most beautiful and glamorous.Lo, Talk about your Ritzy outfits! This one practically boggles the mind! 20. This photo looks more like Alice Joyce to me, but it is supposed to be Agnes Ayres from a 1919 film I have forgotten the title of. Joyce and Ayres did look quite a bit alike. Maybe this costume was even recycled for WINGS eight years later. Seems to be the exact same thing that Clara Bow wore.

Would be nice if Paramount would put it out as part of their Centennial. They really need a Swanson movie in the mix.

  23. :) Interesting Illustration. Don't recall seeing this before. I can name all but maybe two of the actors pictured. Looks like Greta Garbo. Next could be Marion Davies or Anita Page? Followed by Norma Shearer,. Possibly Robert Montgomery or Robert Young? Then we have Marie Dressler,, John Gilbert, Ramon Novarro, Joan Crawford,. Maybe Neil Hamilton? Mary Astor, Lon Chaney? Jean Hersholt, William Haines, Buster Keaton, and Jackie Cooper. How's that? At first I thought next to Garbo was a young Bettie Davies, but it must be either Anita or Marion? There are only a couple others I am not so sure of. Any thoughts?

  24. A couple of rare lobby-cards for two of Milton Sills surviving features THE SEA HAWK (1924), which has been shown on TCM and is available on DVD-R from Warner Archive. Also Valley OF THE GIANTS (1927). A remake of a popular 1919 features that Starred the legendary Wallace Reid.
