  1. filmlover,

Hey, I've waited for going on 8 years for the restored version of *THE BIG PARADE* to be released on DVD or at least shown on TCM for the first time. Since 2004 when the project was completed in 35 millimeter. . That's to long. And really I have actually been waiting since long before the restoration was completed going back to 2001-2002 when it was just getting underway. This is not just any Silent Film, it is thee highest grossing, most popular film of the 1920's. For it not to be, never to have been on DVD is completely ridiculous. I personally believe if they put it out as a TCM Vault release and promoted it on the channel, it would sell pretty well. Should have been released a good 5 years ago.

  2. happy.gif A quick reminder, The Flicker Alley *FRAGMENTS* special if you missed it in April, is re-airing on TCM Silent Sunday Nights this evening. It is really is excellent. A little bit of Clara Bow and Colleen Moore. Including what still survives of FLAMING YOUTH Plus Fairbanks, rare trailers, John Ford's THE VILLAGE BLACKSMITH, Baby Peggy Montgomery, and surviving footage from Emil Jannings Oscar Winning performance in THE WAY OF ALL FLESH. A great program and not available on DVD at this time. You will want to record this isf you haven't already.

  4. Wendy,

    I spent several hours on the photo and was very unhappy with it. Somehow Alice White's arm gets lost in the background and there is to much intensity and glare. Try as I might I could not bring the arm back. Other than that it looks OK. {font:Elephant}Of course I purloined the term "Unspeakably Fatal" from THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE.{font}

Here is another shot from the same group of Janet Gaynor Holiday pics as I posted a couple years ago. 6. Ed,

It's a really unusual photo. But it is supposed to be Mae. The graphic was very soft and hard to do much with.

I'm registered on Face Book, but rarely go there. Plus I always forget my password. The link won't help because my E-mail opens up Internet Explorer, and I use Firefox for browsing. Explorer does not work well at all. I really need Windows 7 badly.

I'm going to re-post these Swanson Christmas pics because they do not seem to be in either of these two threads from last year. Must have been uploaded in another thread? Here is the first one of the batch.

  8. Lynn,

How about this for a theory. Gilbert suffered from a couple really bad movies in a row. REDEMPTION being the second of these. After that he wasn't exactly getting top drawer material either. DOWNSTAIRS is really an excellent script that Jack wrote himself. But even that was far from the Gilbert audiences had known and loved.

Clara Bow also started falling victim to her being treated like last years model in 1930 by Paramount. And not getting choice assignments. Although it was really the scandal sheets that brought her career crashing down, She was still very popular before hand.

  11. Ed,

Did you expect Eleanor Boardman to have such a small voice? MAMBA was just screened at some event a week or two ago, so that must have been recently restored. Did you see the post about RAMONA (1928) undergoing restoration?

Hey, I saw THE LOVES OF PHARAOH and was blown away. An Amazing film with simply gorgeous cinematography. The sets are phenomenal. This is one of the best Silent restorations ever done. And a full recreation of the original score written for the movie. Will, see if the new WINGS can compare. Hope TCM will run this.

  12. The film is so heavily fictionalized. Jeanne Eagels never worked as a ****-Coohie Dancer in a Side-Show. Certainly was not arrested for "Indecent Exposure" either. She did not make a Civil War drama with what appears to be an unnamed John Gilbert. Who never was under contract at Paramount at any time in his career I don't believe?. Eagels did work with Jack in MAN, WOMAN & SIN (1927) for which she was fired mid way through production. The rest of the picture was hastily slapped together from out-takes, and shortened a fair amount over what was planned. I don't think she ever sang in a film either? Yet we see Kim Novak singing in the clip from a film Eagels never made at the end of the picture. What was that about?

The music used during the staging of the scene from RAIN is just hilarious. What is that melody anyway? Overtly Sexy to a fault. And she talks and acts like she is ready to devour any good looking man in sight who crosses her path. No wonder that preacher dropped his Bible! Bad, Bad, Sadie Thompson!

  13. tongue.gif UHG! Was really disappointed in REDEMPTION. Renee Adoree is billed second after John Gilbert, but unless a reel or two is missing she only appears in about 4 scenes. Stuck in yet another demeaning Gypsy role, Jack never even kisses her that I recall. And she is not present when his character dies. Though he calls out her name? What the heck? 90% of why I wanted to see this was for Renee. She was so good in CALL OF THE FLESH. Here her talent, charm, and beauty was wasted. No wonder that Gilbert hated this film so much and did not want it ever released. The writing was just awful, and the story made no sense. What happen to the Son? He is born and the matter is simply dropped?

Eleanor Boardman's Broadway coached Moonings were all I could stand. I doubt if she sounded anything like that. Renee was much more natural, and got hardly any screen time. Conrad Nagel had a great speaking voice of course, but he is given nothing much to say. The brilliance of these Stars Silent films is laid to waste. REDEMPTION Is only of interest as an example of just how bad an early talkie could be. Very poorly directed with no real plot of any kind. What a shame. At least I finally got to see it. HIS GLORIOUS NIGHT has to be better.

  14. No. REDEMPTION was shelved because Gilbert hated it. He begged MGM never to release it. But after HIS GLORIOUS NIGHT flopped MGM went ahead and released it anyway. Many Silent Stars fell victim to ridiculous high-priced Broadway voice coaches, many who probably deliberately tried to sabotage careers. Sadly, Gilbert was one of these who fell prey to them. So did Renee Adoree. But she proved her voice and acting was just fine in THE CALL OF ALL FLESH where she gives a wonderful engaging performance. In Dolores Costello's early talkies she sounds outrageous. But before long she realized what the voice coches were a joke and got rid of them. Good Heavens, listent to what Janet Gaynor sounds like in SUNNY SIDE UP! In reality her voice very different. Conrad Nagel had an excellent speaking voice, but his career stalled just as fast as Jack's did.

  15. ohwell.gif Just in case anyone forgot, and I see no reminders posted, *REDEMPTION* which was rescheduled in September is on TCM this morning at 5.00 A. M Central, 6.00 AM Eastern time. This was John Gilbert's first talkie, not the first released bu the first that was produced. And it has a powerful supporting cast with Eleanor Boardman, Conrad Nagel and Renee Adoree. Not seen on TCM in over a decade, this is a very rare showing. I look forward to getting a nice recording. Hope it works out.

  16. Rickey,

Here is more information from Bor Enots

*"The "they" is me, and no bombshell. RAMONA has been known to be in Prague for years. We borrowed the existing material (a mix of nitrate and safety) and are making a new preservation negative and show print. We will be translating the titles back to English.... so if anyone has a continuity or script let me know. No definite timeline on when the work will be completed. The basic preservation within the next month or so.... intertitles may take a bit longer.*

*Next up is LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT.... oh, you know I am kidding about that!!! Wouldn't have time to work on it if we had it with all the work we are doing on HATS OFF. Okay I am joking again.... just my smart mouth way of saying that really anything is possible!! Those films could show up at any time. We recently picked up six reels from a theater in Ohio and among the reels was an until now lost Alice Guy Blache short. A few months ago Brent Walker and I were winding through some unidentified nitrate and rediscovered two otherwise non-existent Roscoe Arbuckle shorts!!*

*Add me to the list of those that believe while there is a very long list of lost films there is also a pretty long one of films that are just hiding.*

  17. Here is a very interesting photo.Clarie Windsor was considered one of the screen's most glamorous Stars. Yet she is very little known today. In-fact, I have seen next to nothing of her films. At one time she was engaged to Charlie Chaplin. The two never married, but he remained good frinds with Windsor much as he did former leading lady Edna Purvience. The same can not be said about several of the ladies that he actually did Marry.

*ROSE OF THE GOLDEN WEST (1927)* is supposed to be in the same Czech Archive as *RAMONA.* Presumably a fragile Nitrate print.Hopefully, something will be done with it before it is to late. Would love to see this movie too.
