  1. I'm more interested in King Vidor's *HIS HOUR (1924),* based on a popular novel by Elinor Glyn. It was the tremendous succcess of this picture that landed Gilbert the role of Danilo in *THE MERRY WIDOW.* It would also be nice to see *THE WIFE OF THE CENTAUR,* if indeed it still exists.

  2. Ed,

Interesting article, but you make no mention of Vidor's *HIS HOUR* and *WIFE OF THE CENTAUR (both 1924).* The former based on a popular novel by Elinor Glyn.

It was the success of those two films that ultimately helped land Gilbert the role of Danilo in Von Stroheim's *THE MERRY WIDOW*. Also it appears that *MONTE CRISTO* was Jack's most successful film at Fox, and really got him noticed, not only by Movie-goers, but by Metro-Goldwyn, later leading to his owning the fledgling MGM.

Incidentally, Derek just did a 90 minute Podcast, mostly about *THE BIG PARADE,* and venting his frustration that it is still not on DVD or Blu-ray.

  3. Hello, Welcome to the board. What you are describing is *THE PAGAN (MGM, 1929)* with Ramon Novarro, Dorothy Janis, Renee Adoree, and Donald Crisp. It is on DVD-R from Warner Archive label. Well worth having.

    > Disagree. They could show the current version in February, then later in the year and in 2013 show the restored version. There is no need to wait to see WINGS again on the schedule, especially since it is a vital part of American film history.

  5. Silent Films are my passion. My life force. I feel sorry for people who remain ignorant to their greatness. If they have seen what I have seen they would be equally fascinated and captivated by the magic of a medium so unique and expressive onto itself. A medium of extrodinary depth. The most Romantic and moving films ever made are all Silents.Talkies did nothing to add to the creative process of the movie. In many cases, If took several years before they started to find their niche. The Silent film had just reached it's Apex as an Art form when it was prematurely replaced.
  6. Of course the main score will be a re-creation of the original J.S. Zamecnik score from 1927 performed by a Full Orchestra. This is a Milestone, because outside of live performances it's about the first time than any of Zamecnik's scores have been made available on home video. My preference for the alternate score would have been the Carl Davis one over Gaylord Carter, because the Davis score has become so obscure and hard to find.

Wonder when the new restoration will debut on TCM?

  7. Ed,

Very intetresting blog. Isn't this the same article you posted on The Midnight Palace a couple years ago? It seemed very similar.

It would be nice to see THE BARKER and HOOPLA back to back on TCM. Both are based on the same story, and we know that HOOPLA was a biig hit at the TCM Classic Film Festival. So much so that they are screening CALL HER SAVAGE in April at the next Festival.

  8. David Shepard noted that the print of *WHAT PRICE GLORY?* TCM is airing for the first time ever on TCM Sunday, came from him, and his Film Preservation Associates, rather than Fox. Their studio apparently had no elements in it's possession. Which is certainly disappointing, as they maintain the copyright. And WPG was broadcast with the Movie-Tone score on AMC back in 1996. So Fox definitely did have a print at that time. So what could have become of it I wonder? They did a poor job of keeping track.

*"TCM licensed WHAT PRICE GLORY? from Fox which apparently then found that it did not have, or could not find, any element to furnish to them.*

*I was able to help them as a favor, little enough for the many kindnesses TCM has done me and all the others who cultivate the old movie vineyard.*

*The picture comes from a 35mm full aperture fine grain master positive. B&W throughout, and just a little flat as is typical of early panchromatic stock. The sound is the Movietone score from 1927, taken from a composite film element so that we would not be dealing with an image cropped for optical sound, but synched up and of very good audio quality for a recording made almost 85 years ago."*

    *David Shepard*

With both a restored WPG debuting on TCM, the Silent version of ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT having aired last month, and now a DVD- Blu-ray release of WINGS in January, (being released on the 24th) ahead of the THE BIG PARADE is just totally unreal. Never thought that would happen in a million years. Especially, since THE BIG PARADE restoration was completed nearly 8 years ago now. Just unbelievable.

I gather that allot of people here have not seen WHAT PRICE GLORY? Anxious to read your comments once you do. This seems to to be one of those movies that fans either love or hate. I happen to love it, but it's not nearly as good as THE BIG PARADE.

The film rocketed Dolores Del Rio to Super-Stardom seemingly almost over night, but once you have seen it I'm curious if anyone can tell me why this happened? Her performance definitely lacks the emotional punch of Renee Adoree in the earlier film.

  9. Alright than, If you think those are "Zombie Eyes", take a gander at this here. But wait, oh my Stars, this is actually an original color photo from 1941. It is not colorized. So I guess allot of people had "Zombie Eyes" during the War years too now didn't they?

  10. Rickey,

Though it has the same Eric Beheim score, TCM aired *THE SHEIK* with a new transfer from David Shepard's Film Preservation Associates in July. It is quite an improvement over the 2002 Special Edition Image DVD release which contains both Sheik films.. *SON OF THE SHEIK* was also a new transfer, but was only presented with the Beheim score. No option as on the DVD of the 1937 re-issue track.

  11. Wendy,

Yeah, If I could just jump into my Time Machine back to the Roaring 20's, I would bring back complete pristine prints of *FLAMING YOUTH, HOLLYWOOD, PRODIGAL DAUGHTERS,* *THE GREAT GATSBY,* and *LADIES OF THE MOB* among others.;)

  13. Rickey,

I never-ever thought I would see the new restorations of both *WHAT PRICE GLORY?* and *WINGS* on TCM ahead of the restored *THE BIG PARADE?* Buut I have been waiting for 7 years, and there is still no sign of it. The restoration from the original camera negative was completed in 2004. Those who have seen it, can't rave enought about the superior print quality.Just screened in L. A. in July. I have several friends who were there.

  14. Even with a new restoration, *WINGS* will never look as good as it once did when freshly minted. The First Generation and second generation Camera Negatives were lost long ago. All new prints have to be mastered from a safety copy struck in 1965. Even the previous Photoplay Restoration with the Carl Davis score from 1993, that never made it to TCM. I thought this was very good Certainly much better clarity than the Gaylord Carter scored version Paramount stuck them with.

Nevertheless, Greg Nestor who was directly involved in the restoration effort, had this to say a few weeks ago.

*"Just came back from Paramount, where I saw and heard the new restoration of WINGS. SUPERB quality - image is even and flicker free, cleaned up beautifully - during the overture, 100 years of Paramount logos are shown, leading up to film start. Tinting effects during dogfights have that hand tinted / hand painted look, - it is an experience that you will be very excited to see and hear. Restoration copyright on the film is 2012.*

*I think you will be pleased!!"*

    *Greg Nestor*

*And from Wild Bill Wellman Jr.*

*"I saw the restored film at Paramount last Tuesday...I was blown away.*

*The tinting, sound effects and the music were incredible I knew the full restoration would be good, but it all was way beyond my expectations. I'm still in the grip of the elation. I thank you so much for your work...and all your associates involved in the music. I believe my father would be very pleased."*

    *Best Regards,*

    *Bill Wellman Jr.*

  15. > {quote:title=QRex wrote:}{quote}I'm bummed that *Wings* didn't make the schedule. Last year, it happened to be on at the same time as the Superbowl, so the TV with the DVD recorder was taken...

I would assume that TCM is waiting for the brand new restoration of *WINGS,* which was completed just a few months ago. It will be well worth the wait. There is a new Full Orchestra recording of the original 1927 J. S. Zamecnik musical score. And the print from the Academy Film Archive at AMPAS re-instates, most of the vintage tints and toning effects. The only thing that has not been replicated is the Stencil color process that was used during one of the battle sequences. The new version is screening at the TCM Classic Film Festival in April, and my be an unofficial world premiere. Paramount is expected to release this on Blu-Ray and DVD in the coming year. It will probably be on TCM before than.

On the other hand, have to admit that I am justly disappointed that *SEVENTH HEAVEN,* and presumably Josef' Von Sternberg's *UNDERWORLD,* and *THE LAST COMMAND* were both left off the TCM February schedule yet again. None of the three have ever been shown, and I expected them to show up last time.

  16. Obviously, you would start with the three Josef' Von Sternberg Silents. *UNDERWORLD, THE LAST COMMAND,* and *THE DOCKS OF NEW YORK.* All three of which have yet to debut on TCM. Along with a debut of the newly restored *WINGS* which will be screened for the first time at the TCM Classic Film Festival in April. I've heard allot about the new version, by people involved in the restoration project, but haven't seen it.

*CHILDREN OF DIVORCE (1927),* Starring Clara Bow, Gary Cooper, and Esther Ralston because it has been impossible to see. Even Bootlegs have not been available. Restored by the LOC in 2001. Directed by Frank Lloyd, and completed minus screen credit by Von Sternberg. This is a holy grail Silent to allot of fans. *MANTRAP, WINGS, CHILDREN OF DIVORCE,* and *HULA,* could potentially be part of a Bow retrospective, if this could be arranged. Maybe a Nancy Carroll tribute as well.

How about a little bit of Pola Negri. Especially, *BARBED WIRE,* and Ernst Lubitsch long unseen *FORBIDDEN PARADISE (1924).* Valentino's never seen *MONSIEUR BEAUCAIRE* with it's fabulous All Star Cast. The LOC has a gorgeous 35 Millimeter print.

Herbert Brenon's *PETER PAN (1924),* (long held hostage off Television by Disney), *A KISS FOR CINDERELLA,* and the superior Silent version of *BEAU GESTE (1926).* Starring Ronald Colman. These last two are probably out because they are being restored, or slated for restoration projects in the near future.

From the 40's, maybe a long unseen Betty Hutton film or two. There could be an obscure Veronica Lake film or two that has not been seen for decades stashed someplace.

  17. Mr. Israel,

Please don't misunderstand. I am gratified for the new editions. They were completely unexpected, and I had no idea that TCM had inked a deal with Hal Roach Studios for these films.Even David Shepard had failed to mention this. Maybe he was not generally aware of it himself? I'm not certain.

Again, you leave me humbled by your detailed explanation of the thought process involved in your scoring efforts. Anytime you are engaged in a new project it is certainly a noteworthy endeavor. I don't want to appear unappreciative or discourteous. And yes, any Stan And Ollie Silents have not been seen on Television in a very long time. In some respects they had become increasingly obscure. So the rviival of these has to be considered a pleasant surprise.

I'll concur with Scottman that *PUTTING PANTS ON PHILIP* was probably my favorite of the Two-reelers so far. Much less known than some of them are. Looking forward to seeing the next batch this Sunday, with your new scores. One of my all time favorite Stan and Ollie shorts is *THEIR PURPLE MOMENT.* I was first introduced to it, though Robert Youngson's *FOUR CLOWNS* compilation many years ago.

I only mentioned *FIG LEAVES* and *THE JOHNSTOWN FLOOD,* because they are Fox Silents and TCM having fit the bill for a new transfer of *WHAT PRICE GLORY?* a Fox film was so astonishing. I would have thought I would see the new restoration of *THE BIG PARADE,* or the Premier of *LILAC TIME* as they are each technically Warner's property, long since overdue, before *WHAT PRICE GLORY?* would ever be broadcast on TCM. When I first heard the word about *WPG* from David Shepard back in the late Spring I was amazed.

Can you give us some insight into how your the live re-premiere of Lubitsch *THE LOVES OF PHARAOH* went last month at the Egyptian Theater screening last month in L. A.? As always thank you for all the great work you do on behalf of all of us Silent Film aficionado's, young and old.

  18. Must say, I was really surprised that these editions were produced specifically for and by TCM. I just figured they were from some other source. While it's nice to have these seldom seen any more Stan and Ollie Silent shorts revived and scored, I can't help but find it somewhat disappointing, that so many other MGM Silents which are never seen that might have gotten a new score were bypassed in favor of these. And Robert Israel I'm sure doesn't come cheap, even if he used largely compiled music.

TCM also bought and paid for the new transfer of *WHAT PRICE GLORY?* apparently Fox had little or nothing do do with it, other than to provide their "Oh Hum" consent, to the project. So I rather doubt that it will be shown on Fox Movie Channel. Only on TCM. I know they kept the re-issue Movie-Tone track, which is very good. Really looking forward to the broadcast.

Is this just a one time thng, or I wionder if there could be more Fox Silents in the future? Such as *FIG LEAVES,* or *THE JOHNSTOWN FLOOD?* The former because it is a prime example of early, Howard Hawks, and such a delightful movie with a terrific cast.
