  1. Ray,

Note, The original Road show version of *THE GOLD RUSH* ias released in August of n 1925 was over 2 hours long. Some very important footage was resurrected in the late 60's by by Paul Killiam and than much later, Kevin Brownlow in the Mid 90's. Sadly, other scenes are completely lost.

  2. The Chaplin Estate made the poor {font:Arial}decision to go with the so called Daddy Versuions" which Chaplin re-edited very poorly years later. Bucthering THE GOLD RUSH for example. The Warner set has been out of print for nearly two years now.

Most of Chaplin's major films will be re-released by Criterion. So far they have been pretty slow getting stuff out. Only MODERN TIMES and THE GREAT DICTATOR to date. The original Silent version of THE GOLD RUSH apparently will get the deluxe treament the next time, based on the Criterion news letter I got last month. Fully restored, with Orchestral score. In my opinion the original cut of THE GOLD RUSH has never been done proper justice on DVD before. Hopefully, this will be it.It would likewise be nice to see THE KID returned to full-length as David Shepard restored the picture in the early 90's.

Should mention that the Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection 7 disc box set from New-Line (now Warner Home Video), also just went out of print a few months ago. However, the U. K. region 2 Lloyd DVD's, put out by another company should still be available for a couple more years. While Buster Keaton's films are receiving many new re-releases including Blu-ray, it's disappointing that the Lloyd's may not be in circulation for awhile again. Maybe they will eventually make it to Blu-ray, though I wouldn't count on it. This probably means that we won't be seeing much of Harold on TCM for sometime either.

  3. ugaarate, musicalnovelty, etc,

This is new. I don't really like it though as the eyes are to Blue. I thought I posted the photo earlier, but apparently not? Have several Halloween photos I worked on, but that are not of Silent Stars.

  4. musicalnovelty,

No, the gal with the Cig is definitely not Barbara Kent. I have colorized that same still in the past, originally listed as Mary Nolan. It is not her either. I can't recall who is in the still, but i know it is a Pre-code actress. I'll look around and see if I can locate my version.

  5. Ugaarate,

You probably read where Babara Kent has passed away on the age on 103. It's sad that Criterion could not have released LONESOME (1928) which they have the rights too, before she died.

  6. Wendy,

I'll post a couple clips from SHERLOCK JUNIOR with the Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks score on TCM CFU. I'll also upload a couple scenes with the uncredited score from the the old GO WEST Image Entertainment Laser-disc release. Both films are on my slave-drive and have been for a long time.

  7. Wendy,

The Robert Israel score is the default, for the the new Kino Blu-Ray. So it is the main score for the Kino editions and has been since 1995. I don't know why TCM ran THE THREE AGES with the Lee Erwin score? A mystery to me.

In addition, The new Blu-ray of SHERLOCK JUNIOR has the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra score now as default. And TCM did run the film with this score a couple weeks ago. Big improvement over the Club Foot Orchestra, but I still prefer the Vince Giordano score which is not currently available on any release.

They also ran OUR HOSPITALITY for the first time ever on TCM with the Carl Davis score. Which is the Blu-ray default. The older Kino release had a Donald Hunsburger score, which is still there, but as the second option. That is the version which TCM used to show.

  8. Wendy,

I am still not happy with the Green in the RINTY still. Looks Ok, but is not the right shade for the gress. Very hard to fix without changing other properties in the process.

Here is another older effort from about three years ago that I have just revised:

  9. ugaarate, Wendy, Etc,

Yes, I worked on the Colleen photo last night. It isn't quite as perfect as you think. I missed a few spods and was not happy with her belt. There is probably a ribbon in the hat that is partly visible. It is not a cut-out, but as labeled a life-size figure of Colleen Moore. I am not certain who the artiest was. I'm sure that Jeff Codori will know. Maybe he will even mention something about it in his new book?

The RIN TIN TIN movie still was actually purloined from Bob Fell's Old Hollywood in Color site. I toned down the green, and fixed the tree and a few other things, made Rinty stand-out more. He seems to have trouble with Green's for some reason.

I revised this photo. which pictures Molly O' Day. Ms. O' Day was Sally O'Neil's Sister. She starred opposite Richard Barthelmess in both *THE PATENT LEATHER KID,* and *THE LITTLE SHEPARD OF KINGDOM COME.* during 1927 and 1928 respectively.

  11. Incredible! One of the greatest things I've ever seen. A life size figure display of Colleen Moore made to advertise her 1925 film *WE MODERNS.* Wonder if this survives, even if the movie does not today?

  13. icon_surprised.gif Many of these are new transfer, not exactly new prints. The big news so far has been that TCM finally has picked up the Carl Davis score to OUR HOSPITALITY, as well as the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra score to SHERLOCK JUNIOR. They did not however, add the new Vitagraph players score to STEAMBOAT BILL JUNIOR, sticking insted with Alloy Orchestra. The same version they have run for the past 8 years or so. And conversly they sadly ditched Robert Israel's fine score to THE THREE AGES in favore of a vastly inferior Lee Erwin one that seems to have been performed on an Electric, definitely not Theater organ. So really disappointing there.

On the plus side again, they did retain the Robert Israel score for both THE NAVIGATOR and SEVEN CHANCES. Last night was the first time the latter had ever been broadcast on TCM. I was pleased to see it finally be shown. Although, I did not readily detect any notable difference in the appearance of the Technicolor opening? I was under the impression that there would be some?

  14. Wendy,

I did mention this in another threaad last night. Alas, DAY DREAMS (1922) only exists in fragmentary form. Allot of the footage that had Renee is probably missing too. What does survive of her is not in the best condition. The ending leaves me rather cold. Not one of my favorite Keaton shorts. Hope you saw NEIGHBORS. It is hilarious. Was really disppointed that THE THREE AGES did not have the Robert Israel score. I'm sure it has aired with his music before.

I just posted a number of Pics.
