  1. yancy,

Depends on if you have the current Keaton Kino's or not? The most recent version of THE GENERAL from Kino has three scores. Carl Davis is your defualt. Followed by Robert Israel, and Lee Erwin.

TCM recently started showing THE GENERAL with the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra score which is not on the Kino DVD or Blu-ray release at all. So you will want to keep that one, for a different score than what you have. Thankfully, TCM has replaced the Alloy Orchestra score that they has used for for THE GENERAL the previous 8 years. The Mont Alto score and the print is much better and makes the film far more enjoyable.

Last night was the very first time TCM aired OUR HOSPITALITY with the Carl Davis score. Before that it has a score compiled by Donald Hunsberger. The current Kino DVD and Blu-ray has both scores. I'm hoping that TCM will show SHERLOCK JUNIOR with thwe Mont Alto Orchestra score which is now the Kino default. Replacing the dreadful Club Foot Orchestra stuff that it has had for years and years on TCM. There is a very fine Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks score to SHERLOCK JUNIOR, but tKino did not use it.The score I am used to for the film.

GO WEST also used to have a different score on the old Image Entertainment laser-disc, which I feel is superiour to the Eric Beheim synthesized music that it has now.

  2. Big news! This is the very first time on TCM that *OUR HOSPITALITY (1923)* has been broadcast with the magnifcent Carl Davis musical score! Originally recorded in the early 80's for Thames Television. Although as I understand it, presented out of synch at times with the Kino print. Nevertheless, thank you so much TCM programmer Chuck Tabesh for picking up this outstanding score to this terrific film!

This is the first time I have seen the film on Television with this score since 1987 or 1988! Hopefully, *SHERLOCK JUNIOR* will now have the Mont Alto Orchestra score. And *SEVEN CHANCES* has never been shown on TCM before. It is coming out on blu-ray in December.

  3. Awesome headdress.I wish I had a better quality graphic of this image. There is a full figure shot, but very grainy. The gown was considered slightly Scandalous at the time. But of course the real Aphrodite probably didn't wear blessed a thing. So there.

  4. William P,

I tried sending you a private message but it didn't work. Hey, can I get a copy of *PHAROAH* from you? and maybe that Feyder film too, if you have it? Is it a new restoration of *Die Niebelungen?* I can trade you the Photoplay editions of *THE EAGLE, WINGS,* and *THE WEDDING MARCH* all with Carl Davis scores, and none of which have been shown on TCM. Also have *NAPOLEON.*

Any chance you friend in France has Lubitsch *SO THIS PARIS? (1926)?* A beautifully restored print was broadcast on the French TCM last year.

  5. Wendy,

Laura La Plante looks to have been a Major Star as early as 1924. *EXCITEMENT* and *BUTTERFLY* were popular films that year, and *SMOULDERING FIRES* was highly acclaimed.

    ugaarate,

Thanks for all the positive feedback. It is nice to have you back commenting on the posts again. Here is a nice trade for *LILAC TIME* that I found last week.

  6. This forgotten film seems to have been a major, major hit for Universal in 1925, because it was re-released with a synchronized Movie-tone score in 1930. As far as I know the picture in any version is lost today.

  7. musicalnovelty,

Lo! Incredible! *HUCK FINN (1920)* really is on the schedule! Less than a year after I first heard abour the restoration. Amazing to see *THE TRESSPASSER* on the schedule as well. My good friend Ed will be very pleased as Swanson is one of his favorites. Will be nice to see a good print of *DELICIOUS,* though I was hoping for *THE RETURN OF PETER GRIM, or THE JOHNSTOWN FLOOD.* Surprised to see more rare Fox titles on TCM.

You know that Victor Fleming's *MANTRAP (1926)* was just released on DVD, part of the new *TREASURES FROM THE AMERICAN FILM ARCHIVES* *Volume 5 collection.* So I hope we will see that too sometime.Gives them another Clara Bow film on TCM. I'd rather have *HULA* or *CHILDREN OF DIVORCE,* but at least it's something. Since the full slate isn't up yet who knows, just maybe it will contain *POISONED PARADISE (1924)?*

  8. musicalnovelty,

I heard a couple weeks back that they will be airing the new George Eastman House restoration of the Harry Carey Western *ROARING RAILS* in December. What else have they got on the schedule? Do you have a link? Any chance we might see Lubitsch *THE LOVES OF PHARAOH* or possibly a *Colleen Moore* movie such as *BROKEN CHAINS* or *HER WILD OAT?* Maybe they are running Clara Bow's final film *HOOPLA?* which was at the TCM Classic Fim Festival this year.

Since it's Eastman House it would be great to see either *William Desmond Taylor's* long un-seen *HUCKLEBEERY FINN (1920),* or *BLACK OXEN (1923) with Corinne Griffith and Clara Bow.* Both of which they just finished restoring a year or two ago.

  9. WilliamP,

I agree that the Silent version is superior in several respects. Overall though, I just find every version of the film so depressing. Some sequences are almost to horrific to watch.

It would be wonderful if TCM could dedicate one 24 hour block each year to the various archives. The LOC, The Academy Film Archive at Ampas, George Eastman House, The Museum Of Modern Art, UCLA, The BFI, etc. In the process we could get some more premiere's of other stuff that we otherwise may never see. Like *CHILDREN OF DIVORCE* for exampole maybe next year?

  10. Wendy, Ugaarate,

The *Children of Divorce* still was blown up from a tiny source. So it could be allot better. I wish I could find a larger graphic. This one was also very small. Looks OK, but obviously severely cropped. Did you get to see the Silent version of *ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT* the other day?

I haven't found the photo yet, but I believe it was Mary Miles Minter. The other pic you asked about is also Billie Dove. Glad that you are enjoying the posts.

  12. ugaarte,

Again, Welcome back. Be sure to go through the *Silent Crushes* Thread as well. There are many, many photos, Lobby-cards, posters, etc, in that thread which I have not posted at all in this one.I whish that the original thread in General Discussions could still be used for posting photos. They have never repaired that part of the forum.

  13. {font:Arial}Revisionist History has it that the Silents came to an abrubt end with the THE JAZZ SINGER in 1927, But this is far from the case. Silents were still being made in China as late as 1937. Many Theaters patrons especilly in smaller rule areas never even heard a Talking picture until Mid 1931. Thusly. several studios kept releasing both Sound and Silent versions of the same films.

I wrote these comments last night in another thread after seeing the Silent version of ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. The LOC had just completed the restoration in 2009, so this made it to TCM very quickly. which was amazing. Meantime, we are still waiting for the THE BIG PARADE restoration from 2004 to turn up.

*"Wow! The print quality was for the most part truly exceptional. Although some footage is still lost, the Library of Congress did an outstanding job on restoring the film. I never thought that I would see this version broadcast on TCM. I am so pleased that it was shown, and only two years after the restoration was completed by the LOC. It was rather odd seeing several scenes with only sound effects and no music. Not used to that.*

*While I am grateful for the opportunity, forgive me if I still like THE BIG PARADE allot better. And I honestly don't think that ALL QUIET would have been made at all if THE BIG PARADE hadn't come first. Now, when are we finally going to see the 2004 restoration that I've been waiting 7 years to see??? I mean even WINGS is coming soon, and hopefully we will see the brand new restoration on TCM in February.*

*I'm thrilled over WHAT PRICE GLORY? (1926), debuting in November. That was a major surprise. However, the Thames Silent version of THE BIG PARADE produced clear back in 1985 is still the only thing the TCM has been able to show. And where oh, where is LILAC TIME? Will it ever appear on TCM, or be released trough Warner Archive?*

*This was a great evening of rarely seen delights. I am a little miffed that Mary Pickford's SPARROWS is airing again at such a poor time. When it premiered back in April it was on at Dawn than. Same thing again. Jeffrey Mark Silverman's new score is excellent."*

  15. We need help on this one. This might be anyone from Mae Murray, to Anna Q. Nilsson, to Betty Compson. Or it could be someone else all together? Can't be sure?
