Than be sure to buy the Kino DVD. You will not be disappointed. Also has HER SISTER FROM PARIS with Constance in a Dual-role. Extremely funny film. Constance was very big, but not as big as her Sister Norma. Any list of the top 5 Silent Stars should probably include Norma Talmadge name on it, but she has been largely forgotten. I think that Connie was the prettier actress of the two. Both were extremely talented in my opinion.
I would love to see Kino release restored versions of THE LOVE EXPERT , DULCY and THE DUCHESS OF BUFFALO, for Constance. As well as SMILIN" THROUGH, SECRETS, and THE WOMAN DISPUTED for Norma. What did you think of KIKI? Vitagraph players score was pretty good, but when we first see Norma in the cationic state they completely blow the music on that pivotal sequence. My own selections make it much funnier.

There is no Silent Sunday Nigfhts this month because of the Annual Summer Under The Stars Festival. However, there are lots of Silent Films, and 4 or 5 have already been shown in the first 6 days of the festival. 3 of them aired during Ronald Colman day on Thursday, including two TCM premierers. Many more to come on Lon Chaney and Conrad Veidt days coming up later this month.

Hi, had to think about this for a minute without going back to check the schedule. It is probably Max Linder's SEVEN YEARS BAD LUCK (1921). Does it have a Monkey in it?

Cobolt,
Have you ever given any Silent film a chance? Many of the greatest films ever made are Sielnts. Alfred Hitchcock was asked to name his 10 favorite films and 8 of them were Sielnts. If you actually give these movies a try you may be very surprised. Now CHANG was a documentary, so I can understand you not being enthused with that picture. Silent films are not crap, far from it, many Silents are far more sophisticated than the taseless junk that passes for movies today. They require genuine concentration on the part of the viewer. All many modern movies requier is a warped mind, and a taste for blood-shed.
HER NIGHT OF ROMANCE (1924) with Constance Talmadge and Ronald Colman coming up in a little over a half hour is an absolutely delightful romantic comedy, from a great director Sydney Franklin. Apparently, you don't like anything from the 30's either? Lots of Silent and Pre-code fans here, and thank the Lord it is so.

Actually, the survival rates for Norma and Constance Talmadge films is over 60%. Colleen Moore is around 46%. Don't forget that KIKI, HER NIGHT OF ROMANCE, and HER SISTER FROM PARIS the latter of which TCM is not airing, at least not tonight, are on DVD from Kino. Part of the Norma and Constance Talmadge Collections released last year. Hardly Collections as both releases contain just two films each. But these DVD's are highly recommended.
It would have been nice if TCM could have aired Ernst Lubitsch LADY WINDEREMERE'S FAN (1925). Ronald Colman received Top Billing, but seems only about forth in the cast behind Irene Rich, May McAvoy, and Bert Lytell. TCM has run this film, but it hasn't been shown since about 2004 or so. THE SPORTING VENUS another Colman Silent from 1925 Co-Starring Blanche Sweet. figures to be in the Warner's vault, but has yet to premiere. MGM HD has aired THE WINNING OF BARBARA WORTH (1926), one of only two of the seven features with Vilma Banky that are known to survive in their entirety The other being THE NIGHT OF LOVE (1927), though this film only receives occasional screenings. With BEAU GESTE (1926) finally slated to be fully restored in 35 Millimeter, maybe this great film might pop up on TCM in a couple of years. -

Lynn,
Actually, I don't think that Warner's acquiered anything from Turner until at least 1998. Old Threads on Altmovies. Silent from 1997, still mke no mention of the anything form the Turner library being sold off. At that time I don't think the merger had taken place yet.

Blast, I am not able to post this trade Ad here! No excuses it's been well over a year. Can't be that tought to fix this thread. It would be great if they had also found WOMAN TO WOMAN (1923) with the great Betty Compson, which Hitch partly Penned. I want to know what else New-Zealand has? Any Colleen Moore features?

TCM is saluting dashing and debonair British born Ronald Colman Thursday, the first time He has been honored for Summer Under the Stars. Colman much better known today for his sound films, was one of the most popular lead actors of the 1920's A major Silent film Star in his own-right. His screen pairings with Vilma Banky beginning with THE DARK ANGEL (1925), sadly a lost film today, were just as big at the time as those of John Gilbert and Greta Garbo. Three of his Silent films are being aired. THE WHITE SISTER (Metro-1923) filmed in Italy features Lillian Gish at the height of her popularity. His initial American picture, proved a commercial triumph that made Colman an overnight sensation as a leading man in the States.
There are also two delightful comedies Sydney Franklin's HER NIGHT OF ROMANCE (First National, 1924) with Constance Talmadge, and KIKI (FN, 1926) with legendary Sister Norma Talmadge. Both of the Talmadge features are TCM premiere's. It would have been nice to see HER SISTER FROM PARIS (1925) as well, another Constance feature with Colman as leading man. Hopefully, that might pop up on Silent Sunday Nights before the end of the year.
During the 1920's few celebrities were bigger than the Brooklyn born Talmadges. Alas, The Talmadges reputation (Once considered the best known Sisters in the world) has been virtually lost to history, owing in large part of the general lack of availability of their works, over the past several decades. Norma was for a time the highest paid and most beloved movie actress the world over. Even more popular than Mary Pickford according to fan polls of the period. Sister Constance wasn't far behind. KIKI airing at 10.30 AM Central daylight time 11.30 EDT, was one of Norma's most successful features, based on a popular Broadway play of the early 20's. Yet, it is Anti-typical Norma Talmadge, known as a drama queen in contrast to her Comedienne younger Sister Constance, the film is a knockout, almost screwball style comedy., with a outstanding supporting cast of characters including such well know peformers as Gertrude Astor, and George K. Aurthur.
HER NIGHT OF ROMANCE airing at 11.30 PM CDT,-12.30 AM, is another charming romantic comedy, and a showcase for Constance Talmadge sharp comedic style of this period. No doubt a heavy influence on the Marion Davies comedies of the late 1920's. She and Constance were indeed very close friends. Don't really want to give away to much of the plot of any of these rarties. With any luck more of Ronald Colman's earlier career in Silent's will be showcased on TCM in the near future. And the Talmadge Sisters as well.

I'm not all that certain of the survival status of OLD CLOTHES. I'm not aware that it is a lost film, Warner's would own the rights. It hasn't been shown on TCM so far, but there are probably at least 40 or 50 other MGM Silents in addition to this title that have never been broadcast.
Three Silents during Ronald Colman day Tomorrow on TCM. Including Premiere's for both Norma Talmadge KIKI, adn Constance Talmadge HER NIGHT OF ROMANCE.

Robert,
Nice to see you back again on the boards. Thank you for the post. Yes, LAILA is an excellent film, maybe a little long, but a powerful story beautifully photographed. Interesting how you describe all the though behind the scoring of this impressive sequence in the picture.
That would be wonderful if we could get the Silent version of WELCOME DANGER released on DVD. I'm sure you score is excllent. The Main-title theme and the other snipets are terrifc. My friend Derek got to see the Silent version at a live even in England about 3 or 4 years ago.
Have you heard that that fully restored WINGS with a new recording of it's original score is expected to be released on DVD and maybe Blu-ray before the end of the year. Exciting news. I wish we could get a similar announcement concerning THE BIG PARADE.

She has been very solid all week long. Very matter of fact, and Business like. Tippi is still a very attractive lady. I think they need to bring her back again in the future.

There is breaking news that the fully restored WINGS apparently will be coming to DVD and likely Blu-ray before the end of the year. Although, an official date has yet to be announced hopefully it might be forthcoming in the next few weeks time. Here is the thread on Nitrateville.

Many TV shows and movie previews that stink up commecial television today would have received a big fat X-Rating in 1968. So would crap like informercials for Male Enhancemnt products and such. With respect all this stuff is so tasteless. Excessive vulgar Profanity now is celebrated and seems to be one of the beloved things on earth today. I don't get it. There bleeping things out is worse than hearing the word, because everyone knows what is being said and they just call attention to it repeatedly like it is such a cool thing. Like I said Tasteless. Just look at the mentality of most of the people on Youtube. That says it all. They can't carry one a intelligent conversation without constant cussing around.
-
Breaking news! The *WINGS* DVD/possible Blu-ray apparently will be out before the end of 2011! Take a look at this thread just started today on Nitrateville by Greg Nestor, who was present at the recording session of the recreation of the original 1927 J. S. Zamecnik Orchestral score.

Very depressing news. THE AVENGERS is my all time favorite show ever. However, it was one of the very first classic TV shows to be released on DVD in 1998. Starting with the 1966-67 season. Which was actually season 5. THE NEW AVENGERS has been on DVD since probably 2002-2003 are those out of print too? These must still be available in Region 2. I'm sure they wil be re-released eventually. I have almost every episode from 1962 on. Had not herard anything about a new movie, but unless it's set in the 60's or 70's it's bound to be crap. And I want more than just Steed and Mrs Peel. I want everybody in the cast. An animated feature would be the best way to go.

Scottman,
*SEVEN CHANCES* was broadcast a handful of times on the old AMC (than known as American Movie Classics), between 1995 and 2001. '95 was the Keaton Centennial, and the first release of the Art Of Buster Keaton Box set's on VHS, and Laser-disc from Image Entertainment. Not Kino. This was a year or two prior to the introduction of DVD. I have only had TCM since May 1st, 1999, so I'm not sure what aired on TCM prior to that?
*GO WEST* with a pretty good score for the old Image Laser-disc release sounding like a 60's reissue was also shown on the old AMC during the same time frame. I was under the impression that TCM ran *GO WEST* a few years ago when Keaton was featured on Summer Under The Stars, but with the synthesized Kino Eric Beheim track. Hopefully, *GO WEST* will be coming out on Blu-Ray with a better score and that is what TCM will be running in October? Although I certainly won't count on it happening.

Finally, SEVEN CHANCES (1925) on TCM for th first time ever! By far my favorite Keaton feature. I do hope that TCM will also be showing SHERLOCK JUNIOR with the new Mont Alto Orchestra score instead of the horrid Club Foot Orchestra music that it has aired with for the past 6 years or so. The Blu-Ray edition from Kino has the Mont Alto score as it's default. So it is the official score now. Also it's possible we could get the Carl davis score to OUR HOSPITALITY as well. Replacing the Donald Hunsburger score. It's not a given this will happen just a couple weeks ago TCM aired Fairbanks the THE THIEF OF BAGDAD and it still had the same Gaylord Carter score as 12 years ago. Even thought the current Kino DVd release has Mont Alto Orchestra, and the Gaylord Carter score was entirely replaced. And it is not a recent release. The last Kino edition was released 7 years ago. I could not believe that we did not hear the Mont Alto score during the broadcast.

Your favorite silent screen stars and/or movies

A list of favorite Stars would be to numerous to narrow down. There are so many. Gals, I would probably start with my beloved Colleen Moore and Renee Adoree. Also Janet Gaynor and Marion Davies. Male Stars, I guess maybe John Gilbert and Harold Lloyd. Big Tom Mix fan too. Ronald Colman has really grown on me. I've long been a Chaplin fan.
