  1. If you do see a TV Show from the 50's or 60's on Commercial Television today, it is so badly condensed and re-edited that the episodes are now a pale shadow of what they once were. This is because there is about 30% more commercial time than when these series were made. When BBC America was running re-runs of *THE AVENGERS* and *THE NEW AVENGERS,* the episodes must have been cut by more than 12 to 13 minutes a piece. Literally, Butchered! That's heartbreaking to me, because *THE AVENGERS* is my all-time favorite show. Not having a chance for young people to see the stories as they were originally produced is extremely frustrating.

  2. Scottman,

Wow, *REDEMPTION!* Really? What day is it on. Couldn't find this on the schedule. This movie was made in 1929 prior to the infamous *HIS GLORIOUS NIGHT.* Gilbert hated the picture and begged MGM to shelve it. They did so for many months, but unexpectedly released what would have been his first Talkie, much to Jack's dismay, after *HIS GLORIOUS NIGHT* had tanked. *REDEMPTION* has a tremendous cast if it were a Silent film with Eleanor Boardman, Renee Adoree, and Conrad Nagel. Wasn't this actually more or less a sound remake of *WIFE OF THE CENTAUR (1924)?* The plot, story and setting seems virtually the same as the earlier King Vidor film.

Nice to see a rebroadcast of *THE VANISHING AMERICAN,* never aired on Silent Sundays in the brand new restoration which premiered just over a year ago on TCM., Also a rebroadcast of the newly restored and scored edition of Mary Pickford's *SPARROWS.* Though the again it is airing at a poor time. *THE POWER AND THE GLORY* is one of Colleen Moore's only three surviving talkies. But I still hope for a couple of her long unseen Silents before the end of 2011.

  3. I don't know about you guys but I am all Godzilled Out. The last one I had not seen before, but I sure didn't miss much. They re-used several shots from earlier films.

To be frank, the only Godzilla in the whole series that I really liked is the one with the flying Karate Robot that grows Giant-sized called J Jaguar. Tag teams with the big G against another Monster menace. Don't remember the title, but I recall seeing it when it first came out in the states about 1975 or 76 Not anxious to see another Godzilla movie anytime soon unless it is that one.

  4. OK, I'm sorry. Looks like it is 1923? I'm searching the TCM Data Base listing now. Doesn't tell me much. I thought it was '23, but typed '24 for some reason? The reason I thought it was '24, is that both the lost HOLLYWOOD, and SOULS FOR SALE came out in 1923 as well. It could still be Renee, because harold Lloyd isn't listed either. Trying to find Bessie Love.

  5. Wendy,

I'm back. Sorry I had to leave for 5.30 Mass. I'm going to try to find out everyone who appeared in this picture. Also posted a couple new Esther Ralston photos in the "Crushes" thread. Amazing news about WPG, but it apparently isn't a done deal yet. Still additional rights issues to be cleared up according to Chuck Tabesh. Thought he did not elaborate. Been to busy. Note, I posted three clips from *LILAC TIME* on TCM CFU.

  6. I don't know for sure? Mary Pickford definitely is. I'd like to think the photo in the middle is Renee Adoree, but it probably isn't? Looks allot like her. Curious to see what happens with this movie. Would be nice to see it on TCM after being restored.

  7. Yes the original process was based on Red and Green as primary colors. But don't blame TCM. Have you seen THE BLACK PIRATE Blue-ray that Kino released in December? The Sea should not be so bluish, but Green. Two-color (not Two-strip), Technicolor isn't easy to replicate and restore. Although it was done with BP, they just didn't release the newer restoration that the BFI has. Here is a big thread from Nitrateville on THE BLACK PIRATE release from a few months ago. There is another on THE VIKING, which also mentions WHOOPEE that I am looking for.

  8. Lynn,

I already posted there. We had a big electrical storm here last night. That may have something to do with me not being able log-in. However, I'm inclined to doubt it. All I get is a repeated message that ''The page was reset before information could be completed".

  9. Hello, the TCM CFU Log-in is completely dead in the Water! There is no way to long into my homepage. What is being done about this???? Anyone listening here???

PS. the broadcast volume is better, but in general the audio is still to low as well.

  10. I think that I was the first one to notice in another earlier thread that Race in Hollywood must have been pushed back to July. And I mentioned the apparent Arab festival.

Valentino's *THE SHEIK* while a famous film, is quite frankly pretty dreadful. Even Rudy himself hated it. Though it made him an even bigger Star. *SON OF THE SHEIK* is much, much better.

Fairbanks *THE THIEF OF BAGDAD* hasn't been on TCM in at least 11 years. I hope that they will show either the Mont Alto Orchestra version, or better yet the Thames Silent one with the spectacular Carl Davis score, which is not available on DVD, but was on Laser-disc many years ago.

I'm a little disappointed that we are not getting a debut of Rex Ingram's *THE ARAB (1924)* with Ramon Novarro and Alice Terry. Or *THE GARDEN OF ALLAH (1927)* with Alice Terry and Ivan Petrovich. Or even Howard Hawks *FAZIL (1928)* with Charles Farrell and Greta Nissen. Any of these would have been a really excellent choice.

  11. gatester, Mark,

I'll attempt to contact Chuck Tabesh next week and see if I can find out what He knows concerning both *WHAT PRICE GLORY?* and *WINGS,* based on David Shepard's comments? I have not talk to Mr. Tabesh in at least 4 or 5 months. Maybe longer... Also might ask why *THE BLACKBIRD* is not part of Lon Chaney day in August? Though it is probably to late to make any potential change. Robert Osborne may have already recorded his introductions and closing comments?
