  1. I got this in the mail today. Not making this up. It is part of The Investment News Letter. Starts out like this: *"Wall Street is lying to you. The talking heads on television are lying to you. Your banker is lying to you. Your local Congressman is lying to you. Even your own broker is lying to you (mostly because he's being lied to).* *Realize that I wouldn't make this claim lightly.* *Fact is, new behavioral research tells us that bankers and politicians are lying to us 93% of the time. And that Wall Street is 13 times more likely to tell a lie than the truth.* *They win and we lose because our brains have been conditioned to cooperate in their elaborate con games."*
  2. Wendy, *TWINKLETOES* was apparently screened today in London. I am looking for reviews of the event. http://www.britishsilents.co.uk/silent/programme/details/54-twinkletoes.html http://www.britishsilents.co.uk/silent/news.html
  3. Wendy, Good news! Dennis Doros from Milestone confirms that this will be the TCM debut of the new restoration of *SPARROWS* tomorrow morning!
  4. Ha, Ha, I have a photo here someplace of Viola literally Juggling Buster in a Circus routine. She must have been pretty strong. Or Buster pretty light. Don't forget about Mary Pickford's *SPARROWS* tomorrow morning. I am still trying to find out if it is the new Library of Congress restoration with Jeffrey Mark Silverman Orchestral score. Pending DVD and possibly Blu-ray release from Milestone for the past three years. It should be, but I have had no confirmation as to such. Generally. Dennis from Milestone mentions something ahead of time. Haven't read any comments. But I have posted the question on several boards. I mean they ran the new versions of *POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL* and *THE HOODLUM* back in November. The other two titles pending release.
  5. This is pretty wild! *Nita Naldi-"Giant Hairpins!"*
  6. Wendy, Wow! All those picks are great! Thanks. Here is a link with information about an event of up-coming screenings of Viola Dana, Constance Talmage and Colleen Moore films. http://www.altfg.com/blog/movie/norma-talmadge-constance-talmadge-colleen-moore-viola-dana/ Also the link The Portage theater link. *CHILDREN OF DIVORCE* screening on the 13th of this month! http://www.northwestchicagofilmsociety.org/calendar/current-calendar/ Looking for the one to the BFI festival wih *TWINKLETOES.*
  7. Karin, I wish I could tell you what character Bessie Love played in *THE VILLAGE BLACKSMITH?* I will ask around. I have written allot about *Fragments* over the past few days. Though not in this thread. Obviously, the whole evening revolved around the Colleen Moore footage for me. None of her Starring features of the 1920's have ever been shown on TCM, and the majority no longer exist. I figured that only about 47 to 48% of Colleen's films survive in at least partial form. But that it still better than I expected. So there are films out there. Still hoping for a debut of something later this year. Maybe *HER WILD OAT* or *LILAC TIME.* Colleen is so magnetic on screen, such a great actress, and gifted comedienne. She is easily the biggest Silent Star that I can think of without one Starring feature that has ever been released on official DVD. Really hard to figure. We also saw the Trailer to Clara Bow's *ROUGH HOSE ROSIE!* That was an unexpected treat. And the Trailer from Colleen's *HAPPINESS AHEAD* looked simply awesome. Seems to have been a great film. What a sad loss that is. The best trailer by far of any of them. Unfortunately it was also among the shortest. The Fragments of Clara's *RED HAIR* and *THREE WEEK ENDS* were so well fragmentary, that you couldn't really tell a whole lot about either film. But still fun. The color fragment was just test footage, not part of an actual scene. And the other footage from *RED HAIR* seemed to be outtakes. There were no title-cards, where clearly there should have been at least one. I expected Colleen's *FLAMING YOUTH* to be a full reel, not bits and pieces spliced together as it turned out to be. But I was so thrilled to see it nevertheless. This is interesting. Someone is claiming on Nitrateville that they saw a different sequence screened from *THE WAY OF ALL FLESH* than the two that were included in *FRAGMENTS*. The footage that did air was heart-rending from this legendary film. Emill Jannings American career is virtually non-existent. In addition to the loss of *THE WAY OF ALL FLESH,* there was his Oscar nominated performance in Lubitsch *THE PATRIOT,* overall nominated for 5 Academy Awards. As well as Lewis Milestone's *BETRAYED* also featuring both Esther Ralston and Gary Cooper. Neither of these films is anywhere to be found. *THE LAST COMMAND* seems to be all that we have of his Paramount Silents today. The interview with Baby Peggy Montgomery recalling how she and Gladys Brockwell jumped for real from the burning building when she was 4 years old in 1923 was incredible. That lady is still as sharp as a tack! Amazing! Poor Gladys Brockwell! No stunt lady, no stunt Baby Peggy either! Incredible! I wonder if Gladys was acting or if she was really unconscious? As I said, the ladies recall of 88 years ago is just astounding! Wow! I wish that a complete print of *THE DARLING OF NEW YORK* would show up. It looks like it was a very exciting film. If we could just get a good DVD release of the restored *HELEN'S BABIES* and *CAPTAIN JANUARY.* It was also nice seeing the recently discovered trailer of Constance Talmadge *POLLY OF THE FOLLIES (1922).* Even if a print of a famous lost film like *THE WAY OF ALL FLESH* or *FLAMING YOUTH* were suddenly to surface, I'm from Missouri as to how long it would to take to be restored. Just based on what hasn't happened with *SYNTHETIC SIN* and *WHY BE GOOD?* And with Paramount titles, it's probably an even bigger problem. Or would these films get more immediate attention perhaps, just considering the enormity of the titles? As for a pending DVD release of *FRAGMENTS?* Some speculation that it might happen in the other thread, but I'm rather inclined to doubt it. Again, just like Brownlow's *HOLLYWOOD,* probably to many rights issues involved. I'm very gratified over the TCM Broadcast. I'd like to know when the was the last time that *FLAMING YOUTH* was publicly screened before becoming lost? Or at least seen by a historian, such as William K. Everson for example? We do know that the film still existed back in the 1960's and was complete at that time. What was said about it? Didn't someone mention that the last public showing of *THE WAY OF ALL FLESH* was in the late 1940's? The same with *THE PATRIOT?*
  8. *May McAvoy in "The Little Snob"*
  9. > {quote:title=Kinokima wrote:}{quote} > Thanks for providing the link. I just subscribed to that person's channel. Anyone whose user name is Golden Silents seems to be worth subscribing to. I didn't realize that it was Jill who had posted this. As soon as I found the fragments, I posted the link here. will probably be taken down by Flicker Alley in a day or two. That's what happened with the two clips I posted from their out of print DVD of *THE GARDEN OF EDEN.*
  10. Johanna, That still is from TWO ARABIAN KNIGHTS. I think I have a few other rare films with Ian Keith. I will look around and see what they are.
  11. This is interesting. Someone is claiming on Nitrateville that they saw a different sequence screened from *THE WAY OF ALL FLESH* than the two that were included in *FRAGMENTS* last night. 12. Lo! somebody already uploaded the Clara Bow footage from *RED HAIR* and *THREE WEEK ENDS,* though not *ROUGH HOUSE ROSIE.* They also added different music. Boy that was quick. If they don't add the Colleen Moore stuff, I will. Unless the entire FRAGMENTS program is coming out on DVD from Flicker Alley soon. Some speculation that it might be, but I'm inclined to doubt it. To many rights issues involved.
  13. Wendy, I still think it we are going to see any of Colleen Moore's surviving First National or even Goldwyn Silents on DVD, such as *COME ON OVER* and *BROKEN CHAINS,* than they are going to have to be released through Flicker Alley. I seriously doubt that they will be forth-coming through Warner Archive. They have showed almost zero interest in any of the First National Silents that they technically own. The lone exceptions that I can think of being *THE SEA HAWK (1924)* with Milton Sills, and Corinne Griffith's *THE DIVINE LADY (1929).* Interestingly enough both directed by the same man, Frank Lloyd. Warner's should license *HER WILD OAT* and *LILAC TIME* among others, to Flicker Alley and get these rare treasures on DVD. Maybe they can even get the ball rolling to restore *SYNTHETIC SIN* and *WHY BE GOOD?*

  15. The Portage Theater in Chicago is screening Clara Bow's *CHILDREN OF DIVORCE (1927)* of course with Gary Cooper and Esther Ralston, in 35 Millimeter on April 13th. April 13th, 2011 CHILDREN OF DIVORCE Paramount production values are in full flower in this rarely screened Parisian melodrama. Clara Bow, Gary Cooper, and Esther Ralston are childhood chums going back to the convent days when their parents briefly orphaned them to accommodate a divorce. They grow up as frivolous, sensual spirits who know no sin except divorce. Cooper loves Ralston but marries Bow after a drunken debauch?can the matronly Hedda Hopper keep daughter Clara from repeating her mistakes? This famously troubled Frank Lloyd production was patched up and partially reshot by Josef von Sternberg, whose astonishing and delicate eight-year career at Paramount begins here. Die-hard auteurists will have fun identifying JvS?s scenes. Live Organ accompaniment by Jay Warren. (KW) Frank Lloyd & Josef Von Sternberg ? 1927 Print preserved by the Library of Congress, special thanks to Rob Stone. 70 min ? Famous Players ? Lasky Corporation ? 35mm Also Colleen Moore *ELLA CINDERS* (though 16 millimeter) on May 11th. This article clearly states that Colleen gave many of her now lost features to The Museum of Modern Art. And both they, and the technical rights holders, Warner Brother's allowed than to slip into ruin. *ELLA CINDERS* was originally 7 reels. But onl the 5 reel Kodascope abridgment survives May 11th, 2011 ELLA CINDERS Inspired by the syndicated comic strip by Bill Conselman (who wrote the screenplay for the Eddie Cantor film Whoopee! and Frank Borzage?s Young America), Ella Cinders stars Colleen Moore as a modern day Cinederella who escapes her rotten family to go to Hollywood, the land of promise and Harry Langdon. Chicagoans should recognize Moore?s name from her famous dollhouse now living at the Museum of Science and Industry, but sadly many of her films are unavailable to us as most of the 35mm materials were neglected after being sent from the Museum of Modern Art (where Moore herself had sent them to be preserved) to Warner Brothers. However, Ella Cinders still exists because of it?s non theatrical distribution on 16mm, and thanks to the work of private collectors and preservationists, we?re able to show it here. (JA) Alfred E. Green ? 1926 60 min ? John McCormick Productions/First National ? 16mm Short: Lulu in Hollywood (Izzi Sparber, Paramount, 1944) and selected Harry Langdon Short http://www.northwestchicagofilmsociety.org/calendar/current-calendar/Current Calendar Additionally, the 1926 Colleen Moore feature *TWINKLETOES* is screening at the British Silent Film Festival this month. Hopefully, in a new 35 Millimeter restoration. I will try and get more detailed information. Having seen a semi-complete version of this movie, it is a wonderful film.
  16. Wendy, By the way, I ended up watching all of *LAILA.* Even though I hadn't planned to. I pre-ordered the DVD release a couple weeks ago. The 2nd half was excellent, but I thought the first half of the film dragged on for to long. Mona Martison was a really pretty and talented actress. The leading man looked a good deal like Lars Hanson. The remainder of the picture had some very moving scenes, and spectacular cinematography. I could have done without the Stark Naked children rollicking around in the Snow. But it was an interesting, and well made film overall.
  17. Wendy, Here is another interesting quote: *"FLAMING YOUTH to me was the fragment I felt the most keen sense of loss over; it looks like such a wonderful time capsule of the time. The party scene that featured those Hawaiian musicians I can only imagine how they actually sounded (if there had been sound!). The Clara Bow scenes are another bittersweet glimpse. If only all silent films as these were as safe and sparkling as CHICAGO (1927)."* *I'll start looking around tomorrow.* *westegg*
  18. Wendy, Here is a very good quote from a guy on another forum that I barely know. It's brief, but it makes a statement. *"Having never seen the Clara Bow and Colleen Moore fragments before, I was entranced. Makes me so sad that the films from these great ladies that DO exist can't seem to find their way to DVD."* *Also, The Way of All Flesh...what a heartbreaking scene...and loss for us."* *colbyco82*
  19. The footage was from a Leige Conley short from 1925.
  20. The Edward Everett Horton footage was from a 1925 Paramount feature *BEGGAR ON HORSEBACK.* Directed by James Cruze,. One of the top directors of the 1920's The footage was so pristine! Unfortunately, the rest of the film is considered lost. However, *HELEN'S BABIES (1924)* with Horton, Baby Peggy Montgomery, and Jeanie Carpenter, not to mention Clara Bow is not lost.
  21. > {quote:title=drednm wrote:}{quote} > Well... I cried through the whole damned show. To see these bits and pieces, these fragments of legendary lost films. That lady is still as sharp as a tack! Amazing! The Fairbanks footage with Doug chasing the Canary was great.
  22. Technicolor *RED HAIR* Fragment tonight in Prime-time!
  23. Wendy, I'm still not 100% convinced that it is Colleen. So who could it be? The shape of the nose doesn't look quite right to me. Maybe it is just the angle. Also her eyes are not large enough it seems.
  24. For those who do not believe that they are running the *FLAMING YOUTH* fragment tonight. Here is confirmation from Musician Michael Mortilla. *"Not to worry. Flaming Youth has about 10 minutes onscreen with brief nudity and Ms. Moore opening the scene in one of the cutest segments in a silent I've ever seen.* *Thunder as mentioned by gagman 66 in NOT in the program. Chaney can be seen in the Miracle Worker with sound. Goldiggers of Broadway has three clips with sound. All other music (piano solo) is by yours truly as is all post production audio.* *I predict a surge in the creation of green bean casseroles will follow the airing tonight."* *_________________* *Michael Mortilla*
  25. Wendy, That's OK don't get upset. Conversely, does this look like Colleen Moore to you? I sure don't think so. Jeff Codori says that it is. A photo from the early 30's. Such a unusual look, as the shape of her face seems so different. Never seen her hair that way before either. Great photo though. For those who do not believe that they are running the FLAMING YOUTH fragment tonight. Here is confirmation from Musician Michael Mortilla. *"Not to worry.
