  1. traceyk65, Yes, Last March Kino released HER NIGHT OF ROMANCE (1924), and HER SISTER FROM PARIS (1925) on DVD both Starring Constance Talmadge and Ronald Colman, and each directed by Sydney Franklin. I can't recommend this DVD more highly enough. I would like to see a follow up set with THE LOVE EXPERT (1920), EAST IS WEST (1922), and a MERRY WIDOW parody called THE DUCHESS OF BUFFALO (1926).
  2. Prince, I doubt that this is one of the first remaining MGM Silents that Warner's/TCM would consider pulling out of the vaults. Aileen Pringle is not well known at all today, even among Silent film fans. As I said, this was the first time I had ever seen her outside of still photos. Plus the film is missing a chunk of the story in the middle. Tod Browning as director would need to be the selling point. All of last year we only got one new MGM Silent. That being Rex Ingram's *THE MAGICIAN* in March. I hope there will be a few others in 2011. To be fair, there were many other Silent premier's and returns of several films not aired in many years. Rather than *THE MYSTIC,* I would prefer to see *HIS HOUR,* or if it exists, *WIFE OF THE CENTAUR.*
  3. Somewhat obscure Tod Browning feature with Aileen Pringle and Conway Tearle. This was a really enjoyable film. Perhaps not quite as macabre as many of Browning's other typically bizarre productions. Some of the story seems to be missing, maybe a reel in between, but it is still holds up alright. My first glimpse I believe of Miss Pringle who was coming off big hits with Elinor Gliyn's *SIX WEEKS (1924),* as well as King Vidor's *HIS HOUR* and *WIFE OF THE CENTAUR* with John Gilbert that same year. A Suspenseful programmer, about a group of con artists, who go from small time circus side shows with their spooky physic act, to ripping off unsuspecting upper crust society folk. Michael Nash (Tearle) a crafty thief, is the mastermind who co-heir's a shady Gypsy troop into being his partners in crime. The lovely Zara (Pringle) whom he falls in love with, is the lynch-pin to his schemes. "The Mystic" who is soon revered for her amazing power to contact the spirit world. She rises to quick heights of fame. All is going well, when Michael suddenly has some unexpected misgivings on running away with the inheritance of a young woman Doris Merrick (Gladys Hulette) who he actually respects. Zara suspects that there is more to her and Michael's relationship than her being his self appointed personal protector, and the old green eyed monster rears it's ugly head. Meantime, the girls legal guardian Bradshaw (David Torrence) has gotten wise to the whole business and alerts the authorities. Zara Fox's Michael, but He convinces her that his Love is genuine, and the couple plan to give the loot back to Doris. But fellow miscreants Zazarack and Anton (Mitchell Lewis and Robert Ober), don't buy the change of heart, and demand their un-fair share. Just then the police storm in and kayos ensues! Have had this movie for about 3 years, but had never gotten around to looking at it before.

    Ramona(1928)

FrRonald, Happy New Year! Sad to say that this film is generally considered lost. However, that is, or at least was not the case. 10 years ago we know that a Czech archive had a print in it's collection. Unfortunately, I don't know if they still have it or not, or if the surviving elements have been preserved to safety stock? Let's hope that the picture can and will be saved as soon as possible. I'm still waiting for you to ask about a title that is easy to find. Earlier this week there was an inquiry about another Dolores Del Rio movie RESURRECTION (1927).I'm not sure if this movie survives? I have WHAT PRICE GLORY? (1926) and with the original Movie-tone score if you are looking for that one? In addition EVANGELINE (1929) was released on DVD nearly a decade ago by Milestone. Warner Archive has THE TRAIL OF '98 on DVD-R.
  5. Whoops! My mistake than. I stand corrected. Hey, Scottman, have you ordered *LUCREZIA BORGIA* yet? It is a truly epic film, and the print is fabulous! Good score too. May still be discounted yet for another day or so. Incidentally, I have not been able to figure out Photobucket since they made changes. How do I post graphics from it now? What I used to do is no longer working. I have had to use GAOH and TCM CFU to post any photos here.
  6. Joanna, I have looked at the first 30 minutes of *LUCREZIA BORGIA* . and it is pretty awesome. With a griping score. The transfer is processed from a near complete 35 Millimeter print source. With most of the original tinting effects in-tact. Very nice quality. Sharp and crisp. Grapevine has really improved it's transfers of the past couple years. The disc even boasts a motion thumbs menu. Arguably the print is as good or better than the Kino DVD release of *THE MAN WHO LAUGHS,* with probably less artifacts. This movie has never been on DVD before. In-fact, I had never even heard of it until just a few weeks ago. It may still be on sale for a few more days on the Grapevine website. I haven't checked. There is also a code you can punch in for an additional discount.
  7. nipdaddy, Err, Are you talking about *THE MAGICIAN* or *THE PRISONER OF ZENDA?* What did they say regarding *THE VIKING,* which was only available for about a Month in 2009, before it was pulled. I assume another processing error? I wasn't aware until tonight that there is no Silent Sunday's in January, until *TIDE OF THE EMPIRE* at the end of the month. Obviously, none in February either during 31 days of Oscar. Though several Silents are part of the festival. Still, I'm not clear why Silent Sunday Nights is not on the schedule most of next month? Anyone have the details? Incidentally, wanted to mention this before I forget. Again, we were promised *GREED* on DVD back in July by December. The month is over and No *GREED!* I was hoping it would be a start on getting the big MGM Silents on DVD. *THE BIG PARADE, THE MERRY WIDOW, OLD HEIDELBERG, THE SCARLET LETTER, TELL IT TO THE MARINES, SHOW PEOPLE, THE WIND,* Etc.
  8. Wanted to mention that TCM actually airs two versions of De Mille's THE KING OF KINGS. The longer Road Show Edition, and the 1929 Re-issue, which is much shorter. Both have different scores. I'm partial to the spectacular Hugo Resienfeld original scoring track from the '29 re-issue. However, I have to admit that Donald Sousiin's synthesized score for the 1927 Road Show restoration which TCM ran a couple weeks back has really grown on me. I didn't care for it at first, because I was judging it against the vintage Reisenfeld score, which I heard first and was used to. But Sousin's effort is actually quite a good musical score in it's own right. TCM seems to alternate in running the respective versions, since both are found on the two disc Criterion DVD release. But both can be considered un-cut for their respective releases.
  9. Joanna, Lo! You have collected allot of photos! I really like the Lobby-Card of THE MAN WHO LAUGHS. Had not seen that before. I got LUCREZIA BORGIA in the mail, but haven't had a chance to look at it yet. I'll keep you posted. Incidentally, I have finally managed to set up a new Youtube account. I have initially posted the demo clip from THE CONQUERING POWER with my scoring selections which will hopefully be featured on the up-coming Grapevine DVD release in the next couple month or so. Here is the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9havYC8uqs&feature=player_
  10. It indeed sounds like a magnificent event this year. and you didn't even mention the screening of *SEVENTH HEAVEN* with live orchestration by Rodney Sauer and Mont Alto of their new score. One of my favorite films. The only thing I question a little is the caliber and completeness in 16 Millimeter prints of some of the titles. *SPEEDY* for example is missing some key footage in the old Time-Life prints if that is what is screening. Including the touching ride back home in the back of the moving van where Harold and Anne Christy set about house and dream. Just a wonderful enchanting sequence.
  11. Joanna, Baring another set back, I should be well in another day or two. I've gotten rid of the bloody throat, but not the persistent cough and a few other lingering effects. I'll check out your links shortly. Started up a few account on Youtube, but so far I have failed to upload anything. Keep getting errors. You will like this photo. *George O' Brien and Lois Moran in SHARPSHOOTERS (1928)*
  12. Joanna, Here are a couple Alice White photo's that I may not have posted before in this thread? I've got a few more, but they are great big. Need to shrink them down in size before I can post them here. *Alice White-"All That Glitters"* *Alice White-French Barret'*
  13. *Esther Ralston-"She's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas!"*
  14. *Corinne Griffith-"The Grand Debutant"*
  15. JonasEB, I've got a believe that the most complete version of INTOLERANCE is now most likely to be recent Danish Film Institute restoration which premiered on Arte Network in 2007, and ran again in 2009. David Shepard has also produced a brand new restoration, but it hasn't been revealed yet. Maybe forth-coming from Kino or Flicker Alley in 2011? I can say that the Delta Entertainment INTOLERANCE has a number of Alternate takes and a few scenes not in the Kino print at all. I haven't seen the Killiam version anywhere I don't believe. Unless, that is the one that was released by Image on DVD in the late 90's?
  16. Prince, How about *Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks?* 14 Pickford films. 14 Fairbanks ones. What say you to that? Including premiers of the newly restored *SPARROWS* and *THE BLACK PIRATE!*
  17. I happen to feel that the 1970 musical version with Albert Finney that TCM has been running is as good as any of them. Some people bulk at Scrooge putting on a Santa costume and masquerading around as Father Christmas. Definitely, not part of the Dickens story,. But this sequence makes the film unique and more fun than any of the others. The whole cast is just tremendous. For years I asked for this version, as TCM didn't start airing it finally until 2008.
  18. > {quote:title=mongo wrote:}{quote} > Gagman, I posted the very same photo in black and white on December 23rd. OK, Sorry I have not been very Well. So is it really Ramon??? Still battling the Flu and Strep Throat after over a week. :-[ This photo is supposed to be Esther Ralston. Unfortunately, it is not a real sharp graphic, so it is hard to see her face in the photo. There is probably a version that is a much higher resolution out there someplace. Haven't found it so far. Esther Ralston-"Tis The Season"
  19. Hmmm, here is certainly an interesting photo. As I don't believe these two great Stars ever made a film together? They look like they might have made for a good on screen couple. Ramon was a good singer and Janet certainly seems entranced. This is a great Candid. Ramon Novarro and Janet Gaynor-Serenade?
  20. I have had a very bad Strep infection and the Flu for a full week now. It has been very difficult to get rid of. I'm sure I have seen Kenneth Harlan in a number of films, but that only one I can think of is Colleen Moore's *TWINKLE TOES.* I think he is in the recently recovered *MAYTIME* I'll check on that. It would be nice if we could get a release from Flicker Alley are someone of the restored *MAYTIME* and *POISONED PARADISE.* Neither title is tied up in rights to Paramount or Universal, like so many other Clara Bow features are. The British Silent Film Festival in April, is presenting some great stuff. Including *TWINKLE TOES, BEAU GESTE*, and *LONESOME.* Here is a link to Nitrateville with more information. http://nitrateville.com/viewtopic.php?t=7859
  21. Wendy, I have been down and out all week long, I'm just starting to a little better. Hope you had a nice Christmas. This photo is interesting. It is from a film that was one of Clara's very first Starring roles in 1924. The picture is not lost. It was screened at one of the major festivals just 4 years ago with live accompaniment by Robert Israel. I assume the movie is Public Domain, like HELEN'S BABIES? I'll see into this matter. Just look at that hair! *Clara Bow and Kenneth Harlen in POISONED PARADISE (1924)*
  22. *Clara Bow and Pooch Waiting Up For Santa*
  23. *Clara Bow and Pooch Waiting Up For Santa*
  24. Joannna, *"Merry Christmas!!!"* This appears to be Antonio Moreno with Colleen, so it would have to be from *SYNTHETIC SIN (1928).* One of the three lost Colleen Moore features that were discovered about 7 years ago. Along with *HER WILD OAT (1927),* and *WHY BE GOOD? (1929).* Although, maddeningly so far only *HER WILD OAT* has been preserved to modern film-stock, and restored. Incidentally, I know how big of a Conrad Veidt fan you are. So I thought I would mention that *LUCREZIA BORGIA (1922)* has just been released on DVD! Here are a couple of links with more information: http://nitrateville.com/viewtopic.php?t=7829 http://www.grapevinevideo.com/Lucrezia_Borgia.html
  25. I am disheartened that the *SUNNY SIDE UP* thread in "General Discussions" was locked before I could even bring up these points. TCM Web Administrator failed to address the issue as to if we were supposed to be seeing the newly restored version of the movie last night or not? All indications were YES we were. I mean the film was screened in the restored print at the TCM Classic Film Festival. It was scheduled for a Prime-time premier. That alone leads one to believe that this was going to be the new restoration yesterday evening. Generally, 25-30 some year old transfers of sub-par prints don't debut in Prime-time. Did we jump to conclusions? Lynn mentions nowhere is it advertised this would be the new print? All I have to say to that is two years ago, nowhere was it announced that the debut of Mary Pickford's *SECRETS (1933)* would be a new print either. But it was. TCM doesn't always tell us when a film is a new transfer in advance. In-fact, frequently they don't. In addition, on the Al Brendel fan site the claim is that this would indeed be the new version. Suggesting that they had first hand information. I would not be surprised if several other fan sites didn't announce the very same thing? Possibly a Charles Farrell or Janet Gaynor one. Probably Vita-Phone Varieties as well? I haven't checked those yet. Is it possible we could see the restored print in March? Otherwise, I have to assume that Fox does not have access to the recent Museum of Modern Art restoration, nothing in broadcast format? Much the same as it was with the 1926 *WHAT PRICE GLORY?* last May. Which was subsequently canceled. Even though they are technically still the owner of both films. Very confusing. Would sincerely appreciate some answers. I have to assume that TCM fully intended to show the new restoration last night if possible. I mean that was certainly the implication all along was it not? Hopefully, they can get this matter resolved, and we can still see the new version in March when the film is re-scheduled.
