Thanks. I'm still misspelling the ladies name. Incidentally, Maud also scored THE PATSY for Photoplay, but that version is only arounf in 35 Millimeter rental prints. TCM airs the film with, and the Warner Archive release features the Vivek Maddalla score. I've seen a clip with the Maud Nelissen score, and it sounds great. Wish I could see the full movie this way.

Jim,
Yes, but I believe that something like the TCM Vault series with Universal is ideal for the prestige MGM Silents. Put out three movies per set and sell them on TCM.com. I don't think this would break the bank by any means. Call it TCM Greatest Classic Movie Collection:"The Silents". Much better than having nothing at all available of these titles.
I think the Photoplay version of *WINGS* is "more complicated" in the words of Chuck Tabesh last September, because there have been two other more recent restorations by the LOC and the Academy Film Archive. Paramount you would think would have access to those, and the Photoplay version as well, but there is no evidence that they do have. But certainly the Photo-play version is the best that has ever appeared on Television and any domestic broadcast rights do not seem to exist. Nor have they ever.
Why Paramount would still be supplying the same long outdated transfer as the old Laser-disc is beyond me. It was reported that Paramount was preparing a new High-Def transfer in the fall of 2008. Which print source was being used I don't know. If they did this, than where is the results? Have learned nothing solid since that time.
Incidentally, NetFlix means nothing to me, I have never used it. I think it needs to be outlawed anyway. Studios are stupid for not pushing for this.

Jim,
Hey, we actually agree on something! It is a great line-up! I envy your being able to attend the festival. Wish I could say the same.
-
With respect, Why would you want to use VHS? I never even used VHS much. For years I used Super VHS, before DVD recording came along. On the flip-side, I still don't have a Blu-ray player, nor showed much interest in one. And now Blu-ray recording has just recently been introduced.

OK, has anyone seen the add running that states there will be a screening of Von Stroheims *THE MERRY WIDOW* with live orchestra in April at the TCM Classic Film Festival? So does anyone have information about what Orchestra this will be? Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks are playing for Keaton's *THE CAMERAMAN.* And I hope these guys might score Colleen Moore's *HER WILD OAT* for TCM as well.
Who is playing for *THE MERRY WIDOW?* Rodney Sauer and Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra? If not, than who? Robert Israel? Or could it be Danish composer Maud Nelisson and her group? Nothing against *THE MERRY WIDOW,* but I would much rather it were *THE BIG PARADE.* In any event, I hope this means we could be getting a new version of the film on TCM sometime later this year. I was told that the print from the Austrian Archive was much better quality than what TCM shows and is tinted. This was part of a Festival in France last year, where Maud Nelisson premiered her new score to great acclaim. Maybe we will hear it on TCM?

Lo! I'm more confused than ever. But at least it is now working! Thanks guys!

OK, I didn't do exactly what you said, but it worked! But then this photo worked on the other site to, while others did not?

Kinokima,
Thanks, How did you get the photo to appear????

Obviously, that didn't work, but I don't know why? I could see the photo in the preview. Will try another method.

This doesn't work either.

I don't know the answer to that question. I think you need to keep posting in order for your account to stay active. Not sure. I managed to post a photo on another site last night,. Not here so far. But I will try the same method and see what happens. Glad to know that other people besides me were not sure what was going on with the changes in their system anymore.
-
Please note, since Photo-bucket changed their system, I have not been able to post anything from that site anymore. Nothing that I used to do works now. So how does it work? I'm desperate, because if I don't post something very soon, my site will be deemed inactive and all my current links will be broken! Hundreds of them! Please help me out here! I have been posting from GAOH mostly, with some photos from TCM CFU. I haven't used Photo-bucket at all for posting since at least November and probably longer.
In December or so they introduced a new system and I have had no luck ever since. But other people are still posting obviously , so it can't be that tough to figure out. If I post the old direct link here with the two exclamation points on either side you can't see anything. The graphic just does not show up.

Say, If you like Colleen Moore please join her Fan Group on TCM CFU. Currently there only about 6 members. There are about 30 or so that are listed in the "I am a fan of page", but that is not the same as the fan groups, and i don't think most people understand that. You could join the Clara Bow, Renee Adoree, and John Gilbert fan group's too among others. These groups need members. And a Ronald Colman one apparently hasn't yet been formed.

Never! Not Ever! And it is a Stupid notion. Silent films are a completely different medium to sounds films. They don't need dialogue. Many a Silent such as *NOAH'S ARK* was tragically ruined by unnecessary, ill-advised talking sequences being added after the fact. These were known as Goat-Gland films. They compromise the artistic integrity of the production, and add nothing positive to them. The swift pace of *THE LOVE TRAP* is slowed to a crawl, when it suddenly morphs into a very poor talkie a little over mid-way through the picture.

The Talmadge's like Colleen Moore, isn't going to happen for awhile yet. Not until TCM has lots of films ready to air in a broadcast format. The three features that I mentioned have never been broadcast, but could be sometime this year. As far as I can recall they have never run any Norma Talmadge pictures.
Incidentally, is there no Ronald Colman fan group on TCM CFU? I couldn't find one. I was trying to link some photos to the group, and it just isn't there.

Kim,
Audi Murphy was one of my Dad's favorites. I haven't seen very many of his films in two decades Very good selection.

VP19,
I think Mary Pickford is easily your best bet. Followed probably by Lillian Gish, Anita Page and Renee Adoree. TCM has yet to show any of Colleen Moore's Starring features. Even though most of them are technically owned by Warner's. I've been waiting believe me. I hoped that we'd at lest get a premier of *HER WILD OAT (1927)* or *LILAC TIME (1928)* by now, but that hasn't happened.
Marion Davies was featured last year, and even than, they only aired 3 of her Silent films, the rest were all talkies. We will probably get Joan Crawford again, Which should include a few Silents. With Anita it would be mostly talkies. Eleanor Boardman might have enough films, but I don't think there are sufficient number of them ready to show on TCM. If it's Lillian, it would be nice to get a premier of *ANNIE LAURIE (MGM, 1927).* I know that it exists in virtually flawless condition. Still in need of a recorded score though.
For the guys Lon Chaney, Douglas Fairbanks, John Barrymore, and William Haines should be potential candidates. Possibly Ronald Colman. What I wouldn't do for a TCM Premier of *BEAU GESTE (1926).* They could also show the Three Talmadge Silents with Colman, *HER NIGHT OF ROMANCE (1924)*, and *HER SISTER FROM PARIS (1925)* with Constance, and *KIKI* (1926) with Sister Norma. Or maybe a premier of *THE SPORTING VENUS (MGM, 1925)* in which He starred opposite Blanche Sweet. Plus there is *THE WINING OF BARBARA WORTH (1926).* Most of Ronald Colman's film would likely be sound films. Probably 2 or 3 Silents at the very most is all we would get.
With Barrymore it would be wonderful if TCM could a unveil a high quality print of *THE SEA BEAST (1926),* his first film with soon to be Wife Dolores Costello. Never shown on TCM, and for years circulating in poor quality bootlegs only. It was a Warner Brothers film. TCM has never run *THE BELOVED ROGUE (1927),* or *THE TEMPEST (1928)* either I don't believe. Both United Artists films and on DVD.
With William Haines maybe we could get a premier of *BROWN OF HARVARD (1926),* or *SLIDE KELLY SLIDE (1927).* Two of the biggest hits of his career, and neither has been on TCM.

Swithin,
I have both the Carmine Coppolla and Carl Davis scored versions of *NAPOLEON.* The Davis version has about 30 to 35 minutes of additional footage. I'll concur that I am partial in this case to the Coppolla score as well. Maybe partly because I have heard it more often, and was used to it. Supposedly, a compromise was met between the two camps Universal and Photoplay, but everything was put on hold following the Universal Studios Vault fire in May of 2008. According to Kevin Brownlow, all of the 1981 35 millimeter re-issue prints went up in flames that day.

Im4movies2,
Hey, I actually like the Gaylord Cater Theater Organ score to *WINGS.* I think it's easily one of his very best scores. For the most part is has been the only version commercially available. Even turning up on Chinese bootleg DVD's. The old AMC used to run it clear back in the very early 90's. I've always thought that it was a good solid score. But the film itself deserves a much better looking and more recent transfer than it got on TCM the last time around. I realize that TCM had no choice to run what Paramount sent them. So I don't blame TCM at all for the way that the film looked. That 25 plus year old Laser-disc, if that is what it was just does not translate well to today's television sets. For many years it was the only version available. I am very lucky to have a copy of the Photoplay version, because not many people have had the chance to see it.

VP19,
Gloria Swanson just isn't going to happen. Unfortunately, TCM doesn't have access to very many of her films to speak of. They would have to pick up some titles they have never shown, or haven't shown in many years. Such as *MALE AND FEMALE,* and *THE AFFAIRS OF ANATOL,* which TCM has run in the past. And *WHY CHANGE YOUR WIFE,* and *DON'T CHANGE YOUR HUSBAND,* which have never aired. Plus they would need to add a least a couple films from the Paramount vault as well. Say *STAGE STRUCK (1925),* and *FINE MANNERS (1926).* Both exist in pristine prints at George Eastman House. Among the United Artists features *SADIE THOMPSON (1928),* and *QUEEN KEELY (1929)* are available and have been shown on TCM. It would be nice if a good print of *THE LOVE OF SUNYA (1927)* were around, but I'm not aware of one that is in broadcast format at this time.

I happen to love the Carl Davis score to *IT.* Ironically, another person just last night described this as their favorite Silent film score. Here is the quote:
Waverboy on Nitrateville said:
*"My fave Davis score is for IT, just an absolutely perfect accompaniment to one of the greatest silent romantic comedies."*
I haven't heard the Bill Perry piano one in a long time, though I have the DVD. But you are most certainly in the minority who prefer Theater Organ scores. In this case Gaylord Carter's for *WINGS.* They work well live, but rarely on Television. Gaylord Carter's score for *THE THIEF OF BAGDAD* for example, crumbles along side the one by Carl Davis.Same with Lee Erwin's uninspired score to *THE EAGLE,* next to Davis fabulous Orchestration. You are also misinformed. When *WINGS* was released in 1927 sheet music was provided for orchestra with a score composed an arranged by the great J. S. Zamecnik. This would have been played to the film in the big theaters live. I would love to hear the J. S. Zamecnik score re-created and reprised. I have never heard it.
The Carl Davis score for the Photoplay Productions version of *WINGS* is spectacular, and it is what most people expected to see and hear three years ago, when TCM first ran the movie during 31 days of Oscar. The Photoplay print is also tinted and 10 times, sharper than the version TCM was stuck airing in Februray of 2008, and might be stuck with again.

JonasEB,
Thanks for finding out this information and posting it here. Definitely not good news, though not all that surprising. The Chaplin sets went out of print last year with little or no advance notice, I've been telling people for awhile to get the Lloyd collection while it was still available.Hope they took my advice. Worse, April could be the last hurrah than for Harold on TCM, for quite awhile. People need to be aware of that too. On the plus sides the Region 2 DVD's in Europe (not sure of the company), should still be in print for another couple of years. They didn't come out until 2007 I believe.

And rights to the Carl Davis score. Can we tell anything about what version of *WINGS* we might be getting based on the running time???
The only video link has the so-called Re-issue trailer. But that has been on the TCM Movie Data Base for the past three years. Anyway, what they really must mean is the VHS or Laser-disc trailer. Because no theatrical re-issue had the Gaylord Carter score. It would be the J. S. Zamecnik score, and any recordings do not exist. I sure wish that they did. Would love to hear it.
