traceyk65,
Hey! Don't forget about *TIDE OF EMPIRE* the week before.
-
It is not your computer I'm very sorry to say. it is the TCM sites. None of them have ever worked right for very long, and never will until they start taking all these problems seriously and make sure they are fully resolved once and for all! TCM CFU is a complete mess right now. Suggest a movie doesn't work half the time as you say. Probably 80% of the time. Half the time is being generous. TCM get things fixed this is getting tiresome and hundreds of members no longer come to any of these sites because you can not or apparently don't care to get the slew of performance glitches corrected!
-
Lynn,
You can upload photos, but you can not see them after they are uploaded. Nor or the older photos that have been there awhile viewable either. Why is no one responding to these complaints? I did manage to add a short video and it is possible to view in playback. But it's obvious they are still having major trouble. Not addressing this matter publicly shows a lack of courtesy.

This is very late notice, but the newly restored Colleen Moore feature *HER WILD OAT* will be screened in L. A. at the Orpheum Theater on Friday January 14th! Here is more information on Nitrateville plus another link.

Please note yet again. For the past two days TCM CFU has not been working well to say the least. The graphics are all over the place, and bleed into each other. While other portions just are not even visible. My home page will not fully download. I am unable to do much of anything on TCM CFU at present, because only about half of the page is even there. I have tried different browsers, and run numerous updates. Nothing has helped with this matter. Who else is having these same issues? .
Please get these boards fixed once and for all people. This is beyond absurd. And take my advice and get rid of the constant Beta testing, because it does not work! It's a total Lemon! Terminate the contract you have with the firm that is doing the testing, because they are frankly incompetent! This is I'm sad to say, the worst performing site anywhere on the web. Sorry to be blunt, but that is the truth! You always have problems with CFU and the Message boards. If we get a few days trouble free in a row, we are rather lucky.
With respect, there is no excuse in my opinion, for the repeated shoddy performance here of these boards. Changes need to be made immediately. You are greatly discouraging fans and viewership by not getting these sites in order. If you need to shut down for a day or two, so be it. Many people have told me that they have all but given up on the sites and rarely visit anymore because of all the technical snafu's you have on a regular.basis here.

In the fall of 2008, it was announced that Paramount was finally working on a New Hi-Def Transfer for *WINGS.* The film has been restored four times. In 1965, the safety copy was stuck, which is the basis of all other sources today.
In 1993 Photoplay Productions produced a new tinted version, that restored some of the original tinting patten but not all of it. More recently, both AMPAS and THE LOC restored *WINGS.* within the past decade. One of the two did restore the color tinting patten except for one War scene that was a Stencil color process. I'm not sure which organization that it was? In any event, excellent materials do exist. Why do we never seen them outside of your occasional live screening event? Apparently, what it comes down to is Paramount is to dang cheap to shell out royalties to any of these other parties.
All TCM has been able to show is the Gaylord Carter scored version that used to run on AMC back in the early 90's. They have tried and so far come up empty as far as I know, to obtain the rights to the Photoplay version. We might get a fresh broadcast master from Paramount next month, but I doubt it. Most likely TCM is running the same beat up old copy from the Paramount laser-disc that they did two years ago. I wish that TCM would confirm what it is going to be.

filmlover,
Paramount did release *THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1923)* as an Extra in 2006 with the 50th Anniversary Edition of the 1956 feature. While a beautiful, crisp clear Mono-Chrome print, (essentially the same as the 1985 Laser-disc) it was not the 2004 George Eastman House restoration that re-instated all the original tints and tones we see clips from in the De Mille Documentary *AMERICAN EPIC.* Looks like it won't be again on Blu-Ray either. That's disappointing. The hand-tinting they mistakenly refer to yet again, is actually badly faded Two-Strip Technicolor.
Now Paramount/Viacom, Let's get on the ball here. What about *WINGS* in the Photoplay version, with the Carl Davis score? And how about pairing this with the newly restored *BEGGARS OF LIFE (1928).* Both films were directed by William Wellman. Each feature Richard Arlen, and guys will buy such a set just for Clara Bow and Louise Brooks. Better yet, include *CHILDREN OF DIVORCE (1927)*. It's been restored by the LOC 10 years ago. Never has been on DVD or even VHS. Has Clara Bow, Gary Cooper and Esther Ralston. Plus it was partly Directed by Josef' Von Sternberg. So that would be two Clara Bow films. Cooper fans would want it. Von Sternberg and Wellman fans too. Harold Lloyd fans would buy *WINGS* on account of Jobyna Ralston alone.
I'm glad to see *OUR HOSPITALITY* finally being released in America on DVD with the Carl Davis score. That is big! I hoped it would happen, but wasn't to sure about it.

laffite,
Well, I adored *THE LOVE TRAP,* until is suddenly turned into a Talkie a little over half way through. All the pacing that had gone before was stalled to a crawl and the Broadway coached voices sounded ridiculous. I think that Laura is delightful in the Silent portion. So I'm sorry you weren't impressed with her. I recommend that you give it another look.
You may have seen her in *THE CAT AND THE CANARY* before and not known it? TCM also runs the Silent version of *SHOW BOAT (1929).* La Plante zoomed to Stardom in a film called *BUTTERFLY* in 1924 Directed by Clarence Brown. This movie was recently restored by UCLA Fim and Television Archive. After *BUTTERFLY* came *SMOULDERING FIRES* which cemented her Stardom. He was Universal's top female for the rest of the 20's. Also paired frequently with Reginald Denny. She was a terrific comedienne in movies such as *THE TEASER,* and *SKINNERS DRESS SUIT.*
TCM is running *LONELY WIVES* in March which has not only Laura, but Patsy Ruth Miller, Esther Ralston, and as a Romeo mind you, Edward Everett Horton! They have run several of her other talkies, including one with Douglas Fairbanks Junior called *MAN OF THE MOMENT.*

With the release of *TORRENT*, the only Garbo Silent still not issued on DVD is now Clarance Brown's *A WOMAN OF AFFAIRS (1928)* with John Gilbert. The hold up with this picture is obviously the Carl Davis score and the ties to Thames and Photoplay Productions. Along with possible re-mastering. However, I have a recording from Arte Network in France, and they ran the film with the original Axt-Mendoza arrangement. So Warner Archive could conceivably release that version. They wouldn't need to shell out extra residuals to Photoplay. Although, it has never been on TCM with the Metro-tone track. Much as I adore Carl Davis, in this case I am kind of partial to the vintage score.
Henry King's *THE WHITE SISTER (1923)* Starring *Lillian Gish and Ronald Colman, in his first American film,* will certainly be the edition that TCM premiered in May of 2009. I should mention that this ran on TCM France with a different score in 2006, and the broadcast master used there seemed far superior to what we saw here in the States for some reason? I was wondering if the video wasn't maybe encoded at a much lower bit-rate of something? Haven't been able to figure that out. Hope that they at least put this on a Dual-Layer disc. It's over two hours long. I assume that *TORRENT* will be the same as the previous MGM laser-disc.
The early Talkie *ROMANCE* must be really rare because I do not recall ever seeing it before? When was it last shown on TCM?

Jim,
The Kansas City Silents Festival is all 16 Millimeter. I don't believe that the Harold Lloyd Trust has the films in 16 MM for rental.

Breaking news! A new thread for a new year of releases, the first group of which has been announced for this Tuesday. That's tomorrow: http://yfrog.com/f/h6x1prj/

Arturo,
I've mentioned this before, but *Douglas Fairbanks* invented *THE MARK OF ZORRO.* Though partially adapted from a 1912 Pulp Magazine story *THE CURSE OF CAPISTRANO,* there is no *Mark, no Z in the original story.* That was all Fairbanks idea for his 1920 blockbuster. Yes, the character was a masked crusader called Zorro, but in the Pulp what he left behind was *"The Sign of the Fox"* not *"THE MARK OF ZORRO".* Most people do not have any inkling who made later versions of Zorro, that *Fairbanks was the total originator of this concept.* There would be no 1940 *MARK OF ZORRO* with Tyrone Power without the Fairbanks film 20 years earlier. So if you are a big *ZORRO* fan, than you owe it all to Doug. What's more, If you haven't seen the 1920 version, which TCM has run a number of times in the past couple years, well than, Shame on you!

I'm astounded that no one has mentioned that the print was absolutely Gorgeous! And so is Lilly Damita! WOOF! Lovely cinematography throughout. I'm so glad that I started recording the movie on time. Now this is how I hoped *SUNNY SIDE UP* would look. Amazing quality. On Nitrateville no one knew anything about a new restoration.
The tinting caught me off guard as well. You know the old story that Tinting interfered with and impeded the optical tracks and so pretty much was discontinued. This was probably restored so carefully strictly because it was Cary Grant's first motion picture appearance.

Scottman,
Yes, I loved *TOKYO CHORUS* last week. Missed allot of *I WAS BORN BUT...* tonight, but I did record it. The second one was certainly in much better condition. Ive seen enough that I will eventually buy the Criterion DVD set of his Silents.
-
Well, I saw Louise in *IT'S THE OLD ARMY GAME (1926),* and she totally steals the movie away from W. C. FIELDS. Never though much of her, until I saw her in this picture. Would love to see *ROLLED STOCKING'S.* Or *JUST ANOTHER BLONDE,* where she co-Stars with Dorothy Mackaill. We certainly do need the restored *BEGGARS OF LIFE* on DVD.
Hey Scottman, sent me an E-mail. I got some amazing movies for my Birthday. Your not gonna believe some of the stuff I received!

traceyk65,
To be honest, I really hated this movie. So much that I have never watched *DAIRY OF A LOST GIRL*. It disgusted me that drunken reprobate Father was prostituting his own daughter. I know some people consider the to be film a masterpiece, and I like other works by Pabst, but I thought this movie was horrible. Can't figure what others see in it? I just couldn't make myself care about any of the characters in it including Lu, Lu. I kept waiting for it to get better but it never did. Not my top of movie at all. Much of it's popularity seems to be derived from guys panting after Louis Brooks. For a really fine G. W. Pabst film I would suggest *THE LOVE OF JEANNE NEY (1927).*
Hey don't forget about *TIDE OF EMPIRE* with Renee Adoree and Tom Keene also on later this month. I personally think you will enjoy that allot more than *PANDORA'S BOX,* even though the final reel is lost.

Last night I saw the Silent version of this long forgotten movie, and was blown away. Set in the years leading up to the French Revolution, with a Technicolor finale. Apparently, there was both a talkie, and Silent. Having seen the Silent, I really don't care to watch the talkie release if it still exists. Directed by the unjustly forgotten *John Robertson* who gave us such films as *CAPTAIN SALVATION (1927),* What a discovery this was. *Laura La Plante* is breathtakingly beautiful as Marie Varney. And *John Boles* is dashing and handsome as her former Music teacher/fiance Captain Rouget. Terribly Smitten with Laura. After the death of her Father, shot down by a murderous band of the Kings Royal Hussars, Marie becomes an inspiration to Danton and the rebel rouser's, known as "The Torch". Symbolically, she will light the road to freedom. But alas Marie loves an Aristocrat! Whom she has given up in her cause, to liberate France. But she can not forget him. Meantime, Captain Rouget is duped into an assignment to find and imprison "The Torch". Never suspecting that she is in-fact thee Woman from his past.
TCM should find and introduce this film to a new generation. Great romance, real suspense, staggering sets and costumes, well written title-cards. Maybe I just didn't see this with the Vita-phone or Movie-Tone track, but it may still survive? Sure hope so. Film itself seems to be in fine condition for the most part, with period tints. Including Amber, Gold and Blue. You can see that the print is really very good, underneath what was a rather sub-par recording that I viewed I just can't say enough about this movie. Would love for this extremely rare film premier on Silent Sundays in the future! The picture deserves to be resurrected from the vaults.

RockinEd,
Yes, I think I got them all on the hard-drive. I know I have the first three.

Fred,
Of course the major difference is that you never see any adults in Peanuts. They are always off in the background someplace, but don't appear. That being said, both are set in the worlds of children. They are the focal points. It is their world and the grown-up's just live in it.
-
Fred,
Don't get me wrong, I'm gratified that TCM aired them in any form as well. I have seen all of the sound shorts many times, although most of them it's been years and years since I last saw them. However, the Silents had all but completely eluded me until now. So I am certainly thankful that TCM was able to bring them to us.
*DOGS OF WAR (1923)* in which Harold Lloyd makes a Cameo appearance, filmed partially on the set of *WHY WORRY?* is either lost, or maybe it is owned by the Harold Lloyd Trust? It's interesting that Peggy Cartwright was in the first Silent short that TCM aired, but I don't believe she was in any of the others. Of course, I haven't looked at many of them very good yet.
Incidentally, one wonders if Charles Shultz wasn't heavily inspired by OUR GANG when he created Charlie Brown, and Peanuts? Has anyone ever asked this question before?

The official DVD's are not out yet. But it isn't the project that was originally planned by Laughsmith Entertainment and set in limbo for 4 or 5 years. Read this thread for the important details.
-
Again, read this thread on Nitrateville, that explains what might have been with the *OUR GANG* silents had Laughsmith Entertainment produced the Deluxe DVD's that they had planned 5 years ago. It's sad the way things turned out. Especially, with every film having the same score, that would not have been the case. Also the fact that the best surviving prints were not always used for each short. And none of the material was restored either as was the intention of Laughsmith before they lost the rights to the project and it was turned over to Mackinac Media instead. Worse yet, no release is apparently planned.

Apparently, you have to buy this giant expensive gift set deluxe release in order to get the 1923 version at all? It isn't included in the smaller sets? Is that correct? If so, what a Joke that is! I'm hoping that TCM runs the 1923 film, as they have never shown it before. This kind of surprises me. Also it should come with more than just one score. And why isn't it the Eastman House restoration??? That would have been ideal for Blu-ray, and spectacular looking. Instead plain Monochrome. The original release was not shown in naked Black and White.
