  1. I just found this poem by Baron Ireland in a 1928 issue of Life magazine. It's too good not to share:

    Oh, some like Charlie Chaplin

    And some like Harold Lloyd

And some there are who think no star

    Shines bright as William Boyd.

But the best of 'em all's John Gilbert.

    Say, isn't he a darbo

With his nose fast grown to her collar bone,

    Inhaling Greta Garbo?!

  2. Moira, you're stealing my thunder! I had this on my list of trivia questions for next week . . . Selznick wanted Noel Coward to play Harry Lime, but director Carol Reed insisted on Orson Welles.

  3. You are correct, moira! Well done! (I wish TCM would show this goodie, too.)

And now I'll move over and let Mongo drive . . . See you all on Monday!

  4. Friday's question: In what film did Joan Bennett change her hair color from blond to brunette, and keep it that way for the rest of her career?

(Hint: Fredric March was her leading man.)

    Good luck!

  5. Sorry if this one was a little confusing. I was referring to two actors who played Tarzan in the same movie. That happened in the 1942 film TARZAN'S NEW YORK ADVENTURE, which not only featured the current movie Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller, but also Elmo Lincoln, the first actor to play Tarzan in the movies (TARZAN OF THE APES, 1918), who played the part of a circus roustabout.

  6. Okay, I'm all right now . . . Tuesday's question: Emile Drain, Claude Rains, Charles Boyer, Marlon Brando, and Ian Holm have all portrayed what historical figure on screen?

    Good luck!

  7. Your second guess was right, minatonga! Way to go!

(Herrmann played the conductor in the Albert Hall sequence.)

PS to Babs: IT'S BLOODY COLD AND SNOWY UP HERE! I WANT SPRING AND I WANT IT NOW!!!

  8. Monday's question: In what film did composer Bernard Herrmann make his only onscreen appearance? (Hint: The director was Alfred Hitchcock.)

    Good luck!

  9. TCM has shown some of the Monogram-era Charlie Chan movies starring Roland Winters. They've also shown THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and (I believe) THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, but, so far, none of the other films in the Sherlock Holmes series.

But since they've been showing more Paramount and Universal releases in recent months, these are definitely possibilites, so make a few requests and see what happens!

  10. No more takers? The correct answer is TAXI! (1932).

And I see my very good friemd Mongo has checked in already, so I'll leave you in her capable hands until Monday!
