  1. Hey, a Winnipeger! I'm new here, haven't gotten around to posting and I thought this would be the thread to introduce me to this board. It's hard to pinpoint the origin of my love of classical movies, it started from a love of movies. It was one of my many interests in general, one thing I knew from a certain age- I grew wary of mainstream box office hits and searched for something raw, indepth, stimulation and substance. I've always been curious of the classics and I loved pop culture. But I never got the luck of getting a classical movie channel, to get the ball rolling. However, I did see a trailer of a new movie that sparked something and paved the way to classical movies. That movie was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Simply delightful! And from that it ignited a passion to see more movies, out of boredom last summer and running out of good tv shows to watch. Channel surfing one day saved me on December last year, my first TCM movie was Saratoga with Clark Gable and Jean Harlow and from then on I was gone. TCM is now probably the only channel I've been watching for the past eight months.
  2. Out of the recent stuff, I'd recommend, in no order what so ever. - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)- simply perfect. Fabulous original story you'd think was based on a play or book, but it isn't. Fantastic direction, full of surprises- strong characters and real love. - Lost in Translation (2003)- great tale of finding friendship. - Mean Girls (2004)- good for laughs. - My Summer of Love (2004)- a whirl of same-sex teenage love. - The Notebook (2004)- more summer romance, great period piece. - L?on:The Proffessional (1994)- divine performance from an eleven-year-old Natalie Portman, a clip of Gene Kelly on rollerskates in It's Always Fair Weather and a game of charades with fun classical star impersonations. - The Shawnshank Redemption (1994)- a clip of Gilda and great prison story in all. - The Green Mile (1999)- a showing of Top Hat and more prison fun. - The Virgin Suicides (1999)- hauntingly great, adored the pastel colors and instrumental music. - Fight Club (1999)- beautiful script and special effects. - Motorcycle Diaries (2004)- true story, an adventure through and through. - Y tu Mama Tambien (2001)- road trip, friendship, anf full of heart. That's all, from what I can remember.
