There is a WWII story in which the hero rescues his love interest by private boat, sailing across the English Channel by night.
His lady is somehow socially involved with the upper crust of the Nazi soldiers inside a Nazi compound.
After fixing up an old broken down sailboat, he asks an old salt to inspect the sea-worthiness of his repaired sail-boat. The old sailor says:
"Above decks yer fit and trim, but below decks yer a leakin' like a sieve"
I thought this was a Cary Grant film, but I can't find anything close.
