  1. Well, CB, I suppose I will have to back peddle some due to my statement that there are many Garbo pictures of her smiling. I have seen so many pics of her that, yes there are many, but when you go try to find one, it is difficult. I think this is due to the fact that after she reached a certain point in her career, and this happened during her silent career, she said, "No more publicity pictures!" And, by that she meant no "fun" pictures! No pictures of her were allowed unless they were directly connected to the film. So, at the end of each film, she would gather up two or three costumes, carry them in her arms, sometimes dragging them, to the photographer's studio on the lot. Then, she would get dressed in one of the costumes and become that character again so they could have some pictures to advertise the movie. So, if she smiled, you can almost bet it was in character and not Greta Garbo! So, even though she is smiling in some of these shots I feel she is smiling as the character would, which seems a little insincere.
  2. Well, stoney, I would say it was a combination of their youth and the photographer's skill back then. They were masters of their craft, and they all worked (well, most of them) for a studio system that supported their taking several shots and retouching the photo until it seemed perfect. There was an EXCELLENCE that existed back then that we don't have now (in anything, IMHO). The efforts they took in all aspects of production back then, now just seem like a waste of time and, especially, money when much can be done on a computer! And, although I know computers are run by hand, there is much to be said for the old techniques, as primitive or difficult as they may seem now. Just look at these results. And, thanks for the idea! It was grand!
  3. Hi, CB! Actually there are many pictures with Garbo smiling; it is just that she is "GARBO," and they want to emphasize her drama! But, in reality, she did smile in many pictures.
  4. I have never seen this picture! I am sure it is from The Temptress! It is AMAZING!
  5. WELL, THIS ONE DOES!!!!! (Depending on what color the photographer decides her eyes should be! Ha!)
  6. Snarf, this is one of my favorite shots from my favorite silent of hers. The Single Standard with Nils Asther is one of the best photographic studies of Garbo, and to prove it, see the photo below of the two of them between scenes!
  7. Larry, that is soooo cool! I wondered where they could possibly be! It is just one of the most realistic glamour shots I have ever seen of any two actresses standing next to each other. It is truly classic! It must have been quite a party!
  8. Unbelievable picture of Stanwyck, MFL!
  9. A color portrait of the most famous Garbo pose!
  10. Thanks! Yes, that is why I like it so much. You know he just started in pictures, and he only made about five or so (maybe less) when he was shipped off to the war. Then, when he came back he was a big star, and most of the pictures of him are of that after-the-war period. So, I posted an early one of him. But, if he disappears again, I hope someone will let me know!
