Hedy Lamarr: The Most Beautiful Star!
GarboManiac replied to GarboManiac's topic in General Discussions
Oh, I did, too! Did you know . . . ? Hedy was offered the part of the mother in Father of the Bride, but she turned it down cause 1) she didn't like Tracy and didn't want to work with him again, and 2) she didn't want to play a mother. So, they got the Hedy Lamarr look-a-like to take the role, and that is how Joan Bennett came to be Elizabeth Taylor's mom! If Hedy had played the part, no one would wonder from where she got her looks! -

Now, don't get serious on us dpd! She was Tony Bennett's sister, and who is Constance? But, seriously, yes, they were both from what was considered a highly regarded theatrical family. And, ken123 just happens to think that Joan is prettier than Hedy. So, I say, "Let's get 'im!" -
NO, she wasn't in The Searchers, she was in the website that nyoka1 posted. You will have to scroll down and click on the site. Then type in The Searchers in the search category, then Gene Tierney. They are two separate articles on that site.

Speaking of Anne Jeffreys, and I have brought this up before, anyone who likes her should see Step Lively with Frank Sinatra and Gloria DeHaven! She has a great part and a great singing voice!

You're too much, dpd! And, TOOMANYNOTES, I just thought it was going to be a bunch of foul expletives! I didn't think she would be so clever! -

Ha! And, deservedly so! Even if he was RIGHT! I did like American Gigolo at the time it was released. Don't know what I would think of it, now. Wow! Cool to have a job where you get to see so many celebs. And, yeah, perfect timing! -
I'll never forget, in HOLD YOUR MAN, when Jean Harlow hauled off and punched Dorothy Burgess right in the kisser! Full punch right to the jaw! Wow, I didn't know Jean had it in her. From then on I viewed her differently. Don't mess with Jean, or she'll knock ya down!

Thank you, Jack! YUP! That is SHE! I was just so in love with her as a youth! Does anyone remember her in movies as the sidekick with all the best lines! God, I used to look forward to her appearance. Then, all of a sudden she just disappeared, and I never see her in retrospects or any movies in general. What happened to her? I am so glad you showed me that picture; it has been so long I wasn't sure if I had her name right! Gee, I'd like to see her again.

Loved the story, David! Any film starring Jean Arthur is watch-worthy!

I did, too (watch it I mean)! First time I really watched it all the way through. The color was fantastic! But, I don't know, I am still torn. I saw Black Narcissus again, too, and the color in all of the films is so beautiful. Just how can you differentiate? When I saw GWTW the other day, the credits just blew me away! I had forgotten how gorgeous that movie was. Then, I agree, Robin Hood is exceptional! I just thank the Gods of Technicolor! What a boost to the movies! But, don't get me wrong, if I had to chose, I would forgo color all together and just stick with B&W!

Oh, that is so funny, dpd! I had never thought of it like that, but that is exactly right! She was in Rehab! -
That was very enlightening, Jack. But, I wonder how many people were aware of that fact when Citizen Kane was released. Even now, especially the first time I saw it, the general connection made is to Marion. And, even though Orson may have known about the opera person's affair with Hearst and snuck that into the film, I still say the overall consciousness of the film was William and Mairon. Nobody else lived at Xanadu! It housed just the two of them. Orson knew what he was doing, and that is why he created a loop hole. As to the technology, i.e. camera angles, sound, experimentation, et al, it was all fantastic, but very much Orson. He only made two such films to my knowledge, both masterpieces in my mind. After that, no such films were ever made. Many of the experimental aspects were borrowed and put in other films, but never again did I see a film that looked or sounded quite like Citizen Kane or The Magnificent Ambersons! Oh, I take that back! There was Lady From Shanhai!

Hi, guys! Sorry I'm late! Man, I missed a lot! Naw, I don't blame you TOOMANYNOTES! I know the tempatation is too hard to resist! Ha! And, you are right, just stay out of it. I, too, saw it and ran! It just gets to be an unending futile argument with CB&W! I have to admit she pics good discussion topics, but I am not going to play. And, did you read what she wrote over in Five Least Likeable Stars? Loved the stories about Norma and Greta! Really want to know what Joan said! You can ## or ** some of the letters. We can figure it out! Great pics! How do you do that? -
I know! You hate to see your favorites in subordinate positions! Ha! So, the best one for you would be Mrs. Parkington. It is a fabulous story of Mr. Parkington's rise to riches and his choice of a bride is, of course, Greer! She is fantastic as the poor daughter of a miner who becomes the great matriarch of regal descendents too uppity for their own good. But, she puts everyone in their place by the end of the movie! Ok, I'm off! Tomorrow!
-
Ha! Great story. Would have loved to have been there. And, as for Dietrich, the perfect adjective! The spider and the fly!!
-
Well, definitely Hedy Lamarr and Tyrone Power should have made a movie together. But, I probably would have fainted at the sight of the two of them together before either of them spoke a line! They both played comedy very well! I miss them.

Ah! Charm is almost a lost word. Nice to hear it used effectively, again!
-
Ah, David! Forever the noble gesture.

Yes! Isn't it a great movie! That is the second time I saw it, although I only got to see bits and pieces this time.
