Hedy Lamarr: The Most Beautiful Star!
GarboManiac replied to GarboManiac's topic in General Discussions
Hey, TOOMANYNOTES! Go over on the CADDDYSHACK thread and add your two cents! -
OOOH! Ok! Now, I understand. I mean besides the misogyny, you don't like Lemon! Well, I have always been a star man. If the movie doesn't have a star, it doesn't matter how great it is. And, if the stars are wrong, I lose interest. Like when I found out that Liz was supposed to play Shirley's role in What A Way to Go. I could never watch it again. Liz should have done it. So, you are definitely correct in that assertion. If you don't like the star, the movie has a slim chance of winning your affection. Now, I know there are hundreds out there who will differ. I have had friends for years who argue the star is nothing! It is the writer, producer and director! Well, I have never agreed, although they do play major roles in the films success and effectiveness.

Well, add one more narrow-minded bigot to the pot! Here in "our little world," most of us think of classic as a "period" containing fabulously glorious films from a studio system that no longer exists. This period of "The Golden Age of Hollywood" peaked in 1939 and then rolled gracefully into oblivion by the end of the fifties. So, keep your Greek definition. It is accurate and literal. However, even though Caddyshack may be considered a classic of its time, it does not belong in the "classical" period of "studio" film making. This is a distinction many forget to make. Therefore, simply due to it chronological emergence, it does not meet the criteria!

Reginald Owen! My Gosh, he was in everything. He pops up more in movies than anyone I ever knew. And, he plays everything from a pirate to a diplomate! He is just great and I love him in anything he does.
-
You are so right! Anyone here would love it! I laughed all through your message!
-
Who else? A dead give away, but I hardly play these games, so I didn't want to hold everyone up. Ok, vallo13, give 'em a tough one!
-
The perfect tribute to "The Most Beautiful!" I never get tired of praising Lamarr! Oh, and pktrekgirl, he was the MAN! Even over Gable!

Any excuse for a VALlUM! No, it is not just you. That hair on June is too short. It hits her right in the middle of her face, which is not flattering on anyone! It should have been cut just below her jawline. That still would have been short and "maybe" flattered her face. She was so pretty and soft with long hair. And, about Betty. You know when I was young, I was very opinionated. I thought Crawford was an abomination! I only had a few favorites, and I was loyal and devoted! But, you know life gets boring, and we are constantly looking for new diversions. So, as time moved on, I began to drop my prejudices and opened my eyes to new talents. Crawford, now, is one of my favs! I will watch anything she is in. I came around to Judy, too. I used to think she was just too peppy for her own good (course now we all know why)! But, that voice! No one sings like she does! I even came to love Betty Hutton. June has grown on me. I realize now that we only have a handful of them. They are all dead now, and so eventually, we have to come to terms with all of them. And, so, before I die, I plan on loving all of them, just for who they were!

Well, I suppose I understand your HATE; however, I think it is wasted. Private Lives with Norma and Robert, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, with Carole and Robert, are also examples of taking frustrated relationships too far. True, there was no "murder" in either, but the physical violence and smashing of valuable objects is reprehensible! But, I love both of those movies, too. Any movie about the battle between the sexes is amusing to me, and I don't take it for anything more than it is, just entertainment. Now, if you want to talk about movies I hate! West Side Story is one. There is nothing redeemable about that promotion of gang violence, tragedy and futility. Turning youth's misguided energy into a musical was, to me, just shocking! Also, that horror, Pink Flamingos! Now, that movie, tying to turn filth into humor, deserves contempt. Also, that gawd awful Pulp Fiction, was just another violence numbing cultural sedative. Anyone who says that film deserves any tribute has gone way over to the other side of consciousness. So, How to Murder Your Wife, is to me just a piece of fuff, and mostly forgotten fuff, at that.

Oh! Thanks, TOOMANYNOTES! Ok, this shouldn't be too hard: "You know once I had a little dog, who always looked sad when I was sad, and I loved him so!"
-
Thanks, daddysprimadonna! You tell 'em! Oh, and that picture you sent to TOOMANYNOTES over in Hedy's thread is one of the most beautiful I have seen! I've seen many, but never that particular one!
-
Wow! I had forgotten that TOOMANYNOTES, but I heard a whistling, too! Subtle, but definitely there. And, as an aside, the picture over in Hedy's thread it UNBELIEVABLE! I'll take that woman!

I love all the old horror movies: Frankenstein, Wolfman, Dracula, The Mummy. But, my favorites are the trilogy: Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and Son of Frankenstein. It is from these three little masterpieces that Gene Wilder created his masterpiece Young Frankenstein. Without having watched all three of those orignals, you really haven't got a clue.

One of my favorite romantic comedies is with Jean Arthur. It is EASY LIVING with Ray Milland (who never did much for me). It is a riot! It's a Preston Sturgess movie, and I love his comedy. Luis Alberni is a scream as Mr. Louis Louis. It also stars Franklin Pangborn and Edward Arnold. That mink coat causes sooo much trouble! The sets are magnificent, and the plot moves along at a racing pace!

Was it about Apple Annie in Pocket Full of Miracles? I can't remember who said it. Some thug!

TCM Progammer: Lamour, Sidney & Goddard

That is one of my favorite movies of Paulette, as well. I was fortunate to get it on tape years ago. You are making me want to watch it again. The only problem I had was Ray Milland. He just never did it for me. -
Hope that helped!

Ok, Waldo, I just watched Blonde Venus again. I did see her come through a window. She and Hattie were looking down at Sidney Toler who was trying to arrest Marlene. I suppose it didn't happen exactly like your photo. And, I am sure that they probably took some pictures after the film or during which don't quite match the action in the film. Or, they could have done retakes, and changed the film and kept the publicity shots. Either way, the film was EXTRAORDINARY! Wow! What a movie! What a star! And, I can see why Hattie wasn't listed in the credits. Her part was very small.

Frank Morgan as Jean Harlow's dad in Bombshell! What a blundering idiot! He played it to the hilt! Love Frank Morgan!
-
LOL! Now, there has got to be an emoticon for that! One that works!
-
Ha! Ok!
-
LOL! Now don't hold back, TOOMANYNOTES! Just say what you feel!
-
Hey, Jack! Haven't talked to you in awhile! I forgot to add that! You are soooo right. I hated her hair, and she just seemed "more and more bland as time marched on!"
-
Virna Lisi! And, oh my Gosh! This is one of my all time favorite movies! Ok, ok, I know it's from the Sixties, but what the Heck! I loved the townhouse, the gloppita gloppita machine, the fashions, Virna was over-the-top gorgeous, Jack was a hoot (especially with that pot belly)! I could just go on and on! And, at the end, with Jack challenging every guy in the world to "Press the button!" Oh, I know it is TOTALLY Unpolitcallycorrectomundo, but what a laugh riot! Now to me that is a classic! They could never make it again, and it stands alone as one of the finest representations of the culture at that period in history.
