You know, I have come to realize that there are a few major hitters playing on this field. You are a word MASTER. Keep 'em comin' fast and furious. That's how we like 'em!
Now, as to TOOMANYNOTES and the straightjacket (great title for a movie), that came from "those people's" thread, "No more OS______S! It was just meant to be a funny reference to the thread and how much attention it got over an intelligent discussion on English grammar and its acceptable usage in everyday writing, i.e. these threads. That's all.
But, TOOMANYNOTES got it!
-
Well, I haven't said anything. I just came over to see what the fuss was about. I don't give a hoot about babies!
-
B-)
Thanks so much, wordmaster!! I really appreciate the lesson! If not for you I could not emote!! Even though I have tried before, I forgot!
-
It worked!!! Thank you, David!
-
Hey, thanks! Ok, here goes!
:0 What is this supposed to mean, anyway?
Smile?
Tongue? What is this supposed to mean?:| Blank?
;-) Wink?
Boogers! Well, I tried semicolon zero, semicolon small o, semicolon capital O, but nothing!
-
That's right TOON MANY, or whatever, I don't want him to be reported either.
Now, I am busy trying to emote!
:-?
:-k
8-0

Well, I give up! I'll just stick to winks and smiles!
-
Testing: 1, 2, 3 !

:-?
I-)
:-O
Phooey! 3 out of 7? That's an F!
I am with you in your frustration, wordmaster!

In response to your quandary, I would wait as long as possible before purchasing that machine. As you read, I bought one, and I have had much trouble with it. Many of my tapes do not play well on this new machine. They still play fine on my old VCR. So, I can only imagine that better machines will be produced in the future. Hopefully ones that can play any film from any era clearly.
But, to reiterate what Rusty said, our tapes both go back to the early 80's. They play beautifully (if you have a good old VCR) and will probably last many years to come. I would not worry about what you have on tape right now. Just keep buying your DVDs and when the GREAT DVD/VCR recorder finally arrives, someone will blow a horn!

...and stop putting three dots after everything...
You are also psychic!

Sorry, guys. I have been gone all afternoon.
Oh, thanks for the clarification on that, karlofffan! I understand now.
And, wordmaster! You don't miss a trick! You are pretty fast. It is you who deserve the prize! As usual.
But, I agree. I admitted that mistakes are inevitable, (if you are clever enough to catch them) especially at the pace some of these messages are written! So, it is fine with me if we bury this subject. However, I think it deserves at least as much time as was spent on the Osmond's. This is the language of the land, after all.
TOONMANY YOU HAVE BETTER WATCH HOW YOU TALK TO ME BECAUSE IF YOU DONT IM GOING TO REPORT YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ha! Now that was a hoot!
-
That's RIGHT! And, you better close those o's and dot those i's!! If you want to win the penmenship award, that is!
-
There is one more film I don't think anyone has mentioned, The Sisters, with Bette Davis. She plays Bette's only source of human contact (even if she is a hooker), and survives the earthquake with her.
Gee, I don't know why I replied directly to moirafinnie6. It was just a general comment which should have been directed toward vecchiolarry. Sorry, moirafinnie6.
-
What a laugh riot! Isn't language fun!! But, come on, vecchiolarry, you are missing the most important word in the amusement! You forgot ME! "She's buried not too far from ME in Colma, CA south of S.F."
-
There is a fine line, and I hope TCM is aware of it! I am all for getting youngsters into the classics, however.
And, thanks for the correction, Jack! You are to much, oops, too much!
-
To Jack and David, LOL!
-
Oh, patful! You are so amusing!! Loved the geek, oops, opps! Just the fact that you care so much means you will progress and improve. I don't worry about guys like you. I worry about "i thikn u r cool!!?!" It is mostly youth who write that way, and I hope someday the value of correctness, in all you do, will hit them.
Anyway, LOL! Irma La ****! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Even though I would LOVE to discuss The Shanghai Gesture, I would prefer to do it over in The Shanghai Gesture's thread (even though the discussion has little to do with the question asked, that has never stopped anyone before)!
Now, karlofffan, this is TOO easy. Unfortunately, English has always been a problem with the human's who must speak, write, and express it. These threads are riddled with flaws. I expect even I have made an occasional error, even in writing this. But, nevertheless, anyone who is expressing himself or herself on paper, which is what is being done here, should watch themselves! Every time you write, you have an opportunity for improvement. It should be accessed with fervor! It should not be thrown aside as being too much trouble, or not important enough for "this kind" of writing.
Another aspect of the entries made in these threads that bothers me is the use of CAPITALS to escape having to spell, punctuate or think. And, one more thing, I disagree with you on one major point. Why in the world wouldn't misspelled subtitles count? Unless there is some formatting problem that exists with TCM of which I am unaware, there is at no time any excuse for poor grammar, spelling or structure when born to a language. So, subtitles do count! Everything counts. And, it will count everyday of your life until you are dead. Granted we all make mistakes.
That being said, here is a just a sampling of an enormous list of errors I have found in these threads. The names have been left out to protect the "innocent."
there's that one movie where they meet at that diner by the train station and that's where they leave each other because they can't be together, i can't ever remember it!
i started watching classic films when i was very young, and right from the start i loved audrey hepburn, ginger rogers, gregory peck, and cary grant.
why do u want to know?
I would love to see the movie The Sun Also Rises and the one about Barrymoore.
One other thing..I have always thought She age graceful...Better with time..So other age horrible and they still continue to act...
If you read her bio. she stated it herself that she ruin it. Also in the book it mention that Irving told her if she was to marry , don't marry anyone in the business..
I look at it this way,she new when to get out and she still had a GREAT SECOND marriage as well..This doesn't happen in this era...LOL
I was dissappointed that TCM didn't show those 2 movies before the Millionth veiwing of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and In the Heat of the Night but I soon found out why those other movies were showed later.
Thread: Jennifer Jones:Filmdom's Great Actress:did Selznick destroy her career?!?
just so you know the line ,hey this one is for.is part of the line that was said in the movie any guesses out there yet
First, I have to say this to all you it's a wonderful life people.
i believe you're right!
That. is an incredible thing!
I hope this doesn't make me unpopular. I am just adamant about the language and its imminent demise.
-
Eddie Bracken was possibly the LEAST "Sexy" actor in hollywood! Next to Huntz Hall or Leo Gorcey of the Dead End Kids!
-
Thanks, metsfan! I enjoyed Thank Your Lucky Stars. Just silly and fun. And, no I don't think I have ever seen Hajji Baba! But, I like John Derek!
And, songbird2, thanks for the info on those two movies. I would really like to see them.
-
Gee, I think I missed that one. But, I am not a BIG Anthony Quinn fan.
-
Oh! Ok, advice acknowledged and noted.
-
I agree. I always enjoyed Dana, and yes, I am aware of his drinking, too. I especially liked him in Laura discussing her murder with Waldo while he takes his bath. And, that great look he shoots Lydecker emerging from his bath wrapping a towel around his waist! Priceless!
A couple of others I thought didn't or haven't gotten their due. Don't know if you would consider them "lost" or not. That's why I didn't post them on the Lost Actors thread. They may be underrated, however. They are: Marsha Hunt, Gail Patrick, Miriam Hopkins and Frances Farmer.
Loved all four in anything I have seen them do!
BTW, great alias!
-
I'm not sure about what you are saying. I am going to have to pop the film in and watch again.
-
It is powerful! But, so sad. I forgot to add that Quinn's love interest, Lila Kedrova, dies at the end. She won Best Supporting.
