I agree, Jack! Citizen Kane is hands down one of the greatest films ever made. True it has gotten a great deal of HYPE, but deservedly so. And, I accept the fact that some of those who have seen it may think it is overrated, but the camera angles and photography in general are unique and stand alone in cinema history!
Psycho is another great film. The remake bored me, so I turned it off.
Anyway, Ericinhammond, you really must see both of Welles' films, Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons, which is my personal favorite of the two.

With all this talk of Tyrone, by Larry Darrell and such on other sites, it makes me realize I WOULD LIKE TO BE TYRONE POWER! He checked out an an early age, too!

I assume everyone knows, "I'm Tired" is a parody of Marlene singing, "Laziest Gal in Town," in Stage Fright.
And, in her own way, Marlene could be pretty funny! Although, not a comedienne, she made me chuckle in The Devil is a Woman, Desire, and The Lady is Willing.

Man! I have always wanted to see that. The only one I have seen is with Ursula Andress and that HANDSOME guy. Seems to me, after reading your comment, the only requirement for that role was classically chiseled features! Ha!
Is that film available or do you have it on tape?
-
Yes, it is true! I know that to be a fact. But, I always wondered how old she was when that offer was made, and how old Tina was when she accepted it.

Loved Chester in all the movies you listed! Well, at least we remember him!
You know a couple of couples I would have liked to have had lunch with, besides Norma and Irving, were Cary and Betty Hutton when their love was new. Who knows, she my have given me a priceless piece of jewelry had I made a casual flattering comment! And, it would have been fun to go out with Frankie when he was dating Gloria Vanderbuilt.
I would have liked to have met a couple of heiresses through connections with movie stars!!!

That would have been lucky, Dan!

Gosh! What happened to tennis? Anyone?

This is a classy forum!

I LOVE Go West Young Man! Mae in her I-talian villa working for SUPERFINE PICTURES, INC! Getting stuck in the middle of nowhere walking with the pigs. What a roit. I know it wasn't great, but it was great Mae! Good ole Warren Williams! Randolph is a hunk! Isabel is a Jewel as Marlene! Everyone does a great job, but you are right about Alice being wasted as "the voice of reason!"

Gosh, that's terrible! Not that I am comparing, because there is no comparison, but that sounds just like Hedy. Wow, what terrible choices these gals made sometimes! When you think about what should have been or what could have been! Oh, well, hindsight!

You're welcome from everyone, I am sure!
I think anyone who loves film has fallen for Larry! You just can't help it. He is the most forthright, upright character of all (plus the fact he is played by Tyrone Power). To me he represents level # 6 on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: The Need to Know and Understand.
And, no, I haven't seen Bill Murray's remake either and never will.

So no one's gotten my name yet, it appears.
I got it, Ty. And, its one of my favorites!

Thank you sooooo much, sandykaypax and moirafinnie6!!

LOL! Very funny! Should should take Edward Everett Horton with you, too!

Hooray, featio! I didn't want to be the one to bring her up. Too obvious. But, that shyness was at the core of all of her behavior.

Yeah, that's it! They will last longer. I was hoping my tapes would last at least another 30 years! They probably won't. So, I bought one of those machines to copy tapes to DVD. But, I am such a dolt, I haven't figured out how to work it yet. And, some of my movies don't come through clean on the VHS part of the machine. So, I wouldn't want to copy them to DVD anyway. Oh, dilemma after dilemma! So, I guess I will just keep buying DVD's. And, like you said, have them twice (on VHS and DVD).

When I was a kid growing up in the 50's in Washington D.C. I was sickly. I spent most of my youth in bed. At that time all they had on TV to show for movies were the 30's and 40's films. That lasted into the 60's, and by then I was hooked. I always wanted to be a movie star in my fantasies, but then had a rude awakening by the time I hit twenty and the 70's movies were all sex and reality! I never did become a movie star!!!
My first favortie was Jean Harlow. I feel in love with her and was a devoted fan until I saw Garbo. For, years, in my youth they were the only two stars for me. Then, I saw Dietrich, and when I moved to San Francisco in my twenties, one of the first films I saw in a theatre was Algiers. Well, I was smitten just like everyone was the first time they saw Lamarr. It was in my thirties I started to diversify. Now, my list of favorites is as long as anyone else's!

I have both the Raffles on tape. Got them in the 80's. Niven's is one of the few movies I really thought he did well in. Niven had sophistication and was often adept at comedy, but Colman was an Olivier! Or, the other way around.
-
Great choices! Let me throw in Patsy Kelly and Helen Brodrick.
-
You know I love that movie. He is so funny in that. I wish I had it in my colleciton.
But, I have been thinking, and a great many great scenes had staircases in them. The scene with Ronald Coleman and Madeline Carroll coming down the stairs in Prisoner of Zenda, and Marie Antoinette with Norma and Schildkraut descending into that Snake Pit! I love staircases!
-
You beat me! I was going to say Eleanor Powell, too! I loved that movie. Have you ever seen Rosalie!! What a show she puts on!
But, my absolute favorite is Rita. You Were Never Lovelier, and You'll Never Get Rich with Astaire are fantastic. Also, Cover Girl, Tonight and Every Night and Down to Earth! Not to mention she was a great beauty!
-
Yes, Eric Rhodes in The Gay Divorcee. "For de woman de kiss! For de man de sword!" and also, "Chances are, that Fate is Foolish!"
-
I remember liking it a lot. Probably because it was odd. Betty Hutton and Sonny Tufts???!!! Oh, well, I did like Betty. She was too much!!!
Yes, I know. I am a terrible old movie fan, too! I have maybe 800 or more movies on tape. I started taping off TCM back in '82. I have old films with Bob Dorian introducing and, even, the guy before him (can't remember his name but I liked him). Now, that everything is coming out on DVD, I don't know what to do. I have all of Garbo on tape and her DVD collection.
Oh, and I liked We're Not Dressing, too. Great cast!

I'm In The Mood For...

STOP! You're both right! It's a breath mint and a . . . .
Oh, sorry.
What I am trying to say, Waldo, is that mood is an essential element in film. Black and White film, or the Silver Screen, was a mood in itself. Old Hollywood developed that mood and was able to carry it through to color, but it eventually died.
But, Jack you are right, too. Without mood, film is nothing. I don't care much for the mood in most modern films, but I do like it when they try to capture that "old feeling" of B&W films. They were my favorites, and to this day still are.
Well, that's all I have to say. I'm not in the mood for this discussion. I am going back to GARBO!
