  2. The winners of the annual USC Scripter Awards -- presented by the University of Southern California to movie screenwriters (since 1988) and television writers (since 2015) -- were announced Saturday. The awards ceremony, normally held in the university's Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library, was conducted virtually this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. For motion picture screenwriting, the award went to: Chloé Zhao (pictured below) for "Nomadland," based on the nonfiction book by Jessica Bruder. The award for television writing went to: Scott Frank for the "Openings" episode of Netflix's "The Queen's Gambit" series, based on the novel by Walter Tevis.

The Romanian documentary film "Collective," Alexander Nanau's investigation of a tragic 2015 Bucharest club fire and its repercussions for government officials, received the top honor this week at the annual Cinema Eye Honors. The Outstanding Achievement in Direction was won by Kirsten Johnson (pictured below right) for her documentary about her father, "Dick Johnson Is Dead." A veteran cinematographer, Kirsten Johnson won the top prize at the 2016-2017 Cinema Eye Honors for her memoir "Cameraperson."
