Produced and directed by Dick Powell, this drama set during World War II explores a battle of wits in the South Atlantic Ocean between a the commander of a U.S. vessel (Mitchum) and the captain of a German submarine (Jürgens). The film won the Academy Award for its special effects (Walter Rossi). The movie's screenplay was adapted by Wendell Mayes from the 1956 novel by D.A. Rayner, a former officer in the British Royal Navy. The story inspired the Season 1 episode of "Star Trek" titled "Balance of Terror," in which Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) of the starship USS Enterprise attempts to outstrategize the commander of a Romulan warbird (Mark Lenard). Written by Paul Schneider and directed by Vincent McEveety, the episode originally aired on December 15, 1966. Expires June 9, 2015. 2. Expires June 9, 2015. 3. Split Second (1953) -- Stephen McNally, Alexis Smith, Jan Sterling, Keith Andes, Arthur Hunnicutt, Paul Kelly, Robert Paige, Richard Egan, Frank DeKova Frank DeKova. Uncredited: Nestor Paiva. Directed by Dick Powell, this crime drama is about escaped convicts (McNally, Kelly) who grab hostages and hole up in Lost Hope City -- a deserted town in Nevada. The name of the town could be appropriate for the group's situation. Unknown to many of them, the U.S. government is preparing to conduct an atomic bomb test in the vicinity. Expires June 9, 2015.

Damn, Olivier was great! Since Robert Wagner was Brick, should we presume that Natalie Wood was Maggie the Cat? I like Olivier's accent as Big Daddy better than the mainstream American accent he tried as the auto magnate in "The Betsy" (1978). -
