Bob Strauss @bscritic #SimonRex's fast-talking, delusional, down-and-out ex-porn actor in #RedRocket is an astoundingly energetic, accomplished & skeezy performance. Bob Strauss @bscritic #BeingTheRicardos is pretty interesting despite #AaronSorkin's utterly artificial structuring and dialogue. Even if you never loved the #LUCY show, #NicoleKidman locates #LucilleBall's fierce intelligence and smoldering sex appeal in ways never dreamed possible. By me, anyway. 4:12 PM · Dec 10, 2021·Twitter Web App

Bob Strauss @bscritic #StevenSpielberg's urban renewal approach to #WestSideStory is brawnier, grittier and, of course, more authentically cast than the 1961 movie. Winning in every way, but especially for what it lets #RitaMoreno do 60 years after her #Oscar-winning turn in the first film. 4:00 PM · Dec 10, 2021·Twitter Web App

Michael Nesmith, one-fourth of the 1960s television and music sensation known as The Monkees, died Friday at his Carmel Valley home near California's Central Coast. The Grammy Award winner -- he was the first to receive Video of the Year honor in 1982 -- was 78 years old. “With infinite love we announce that Michael Nesmith has passed away this morning in his home, surrounded by family, peacefully and of natural causes,” his family said in a statement to Rolling Stone magazine. “We ask that you respect our privacy at this time and we thank you for the love and light that all of you have shown him and us.” Nesmith's death means that the 76-year-old Micky Dolenz is the last living member of The Monkees. Davy Jones had a fatal heart attack in 2012 at the age of 66. Peter Tork succumbed to cancer in 2019 at the age of 77. Nesmith and Dolenz performed on a farewell tour just last month, with Nesmith saying the group’s impact was “more than I ever imagined.” Nesmith is survived by his four children: Christian, Jessica, Jason and Jonathan. Nesmith, a native Texan, was the son of Bette Nesmith Graham (1924-1980) -- a onetime Dallas bank and trust company's executive secretary who in 1956 invented a cure for typing mistakes. Originally called Mistake Out, the product -- renamed Liquid Paper --was sold in 1976 to The Gillette Company for $47.5 million. Nesmith was said to have inherited half of his mother's $50 million estate. Nesmith made his own creative impact on the pop culture. His experimentation with music videos -- including the 1977 effort "Rio" from his LP "From a Radio Engine to the Photon Wing" -- was a step toward the creation of MTV in 1981. His 1979 concept for a music TV show called "PopClips" was sold to the Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment Company, which turned it into MTV. “My plan had always been to build it and sell it,” Nesmith said. “They paid me a nice number. That was my exit.” Nesmith -- who had developed an affinity for singing, songwriting and guitar playing after a stint in the U.S. Air Force -- auditioned for a television comedy inspired by The Beatles' screen hits "A Hard Day's Night" (1964) and "Help!"(1965). He was selected for "The Monkees" (along with Dolenz, Tork and Britisher Jones), and the half-hour series about a fictional band premiered on NBC on September 12, 1966. Nesmith became known for his fondness for wearing wool hats. The sitcom -- with its appealing leads and honest-to-goodness catchy pop songs (written by the likes of Neil Diamond, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart and Gerry Goffin and Carole King) -- was a ratings hit with the younger generation. The band's first song -- "Last Train to Clarksville" (written by Boyce and Hart) -- was a No. 1 hit in the United States and Canada, The Monkees' follow-up release -- "I'm a Believer" (written by Diamond) -- was an even bigger hit worldwide. In early 1967, Nesmith (pictured below with John Lennon) was one of the celebrities invited to attend The Beatles' recording session for "A Day in the Life" from The Fab Four's groundbreaking concept album, "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hears Club Band." At the 19th annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, held on June 4, 1967, "The Monkees" won the award for Outstanding Comedy Series (the award went to producers Bert Rafelson and Bert Schneider), James Frawley also won the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy (for the Season 1 episode "Royal Flush"). In the fall of 1967, a song written by Nesmith three years earlier became a high-charting hit. "Different Drum," recorded by the L.A.-based group Stone Poneys (featuring a lead singer named Linda Ronstadt) peaked at No. 13 on Billboard's pop chart. During Season 2 of "The Monkees," the band members gained some leverage about song choices. In 1968, they even released Nesmith's "Mary, Mary," which was first recorded two years earlier by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. In 1968, after the cancellation of "The Monkees," the band members starred in the musical feature film "Head," which was directed by Rafelson and co-written by Rafelson and his friend Jack Nicholson. The project, which included appearances by Nicholson, Teri Garr and others, was a box-office disappointment. But it has developed a cult following through the years. "The film's success is in a series of satires on movie clichés, and in several blackouts," wrote the film critic Roger Ebert, who gave the picture 2 1/2 stars. "These are probably Nicholson's, and worth seeing." In 1984, Nesmith served as the executive producer of the offbeat sci-fi film "Repo Man," which starred Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez. It was the first picture written and directed by the British filmmaker Alex Cox ("Sid & Nancy"). Nesmith (pictured below with Stanton) made an onscreen appearance as a rabbi.
