  1. Billy Hinsche, a touring member of The Beach Boys and a former teen idol thanks to his early days in a well-connected band with two second-generation celebrities, died of lung cancer Saturday at the age of 70. His friend actor Jon Provost, who starred in CBS' "Lassie" series, said Hinsche died on the same day as his 96-year-old mother, Celia. From 1964 to 1969, the Manila-born Hinsche teamed with longtime Beverly Hills schoolmates Dean Paul Martin (son of Dean and Jeanne Martin) and Desi Arnaz, Jr. (son of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball) in the band Dino, Desi and Billy, which was signed by Frank Sinatra's Reprise record label. On September 19, 1965, the band appeared on CBS' "The Ed Sullivan Show" to perform "I'm a Fool," which also was the title of their debut album from Reprise. "I'm a Fool," written by Red West -- Elvis' pal --and - "Shindig" TV regular Joey Cooper, peaked at No. 17 on Billboard's pop chart. Also on "The Ed Sullivan Show," the band performed "Not the Lovin' Kind," which was written by singer-producer Lee Hazlewood, who frequently collaborated with Nancy Sinatra. The song peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard pop chart. In 1966, the band appeared in "Murderer's Row," the second of four movies starring Dean Martin as espionage agent Matt Helm. In the film, which also featured Ann-Margret, Karl Malden and Camilla Sparv, Dino, Desi and Billy performed the Tommy Boyce-Bobby Hart song "If You're Thinkin' What I'm Thinkin'." After Dino, Desi and Billy disbanded in 1969, Hinsche earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Theater, Film and Television. He also began a productive relationship with The Beach Boys and even performed with individual members of the group. His sister Annie was married to Carl Wilson for a time. Dean Paul Martin was killed in a military plane crash in 1987, which ended any hopes of a true Dino, Desi and Billy reunion. But Arnaz and Hinsche eventually joined forces with Martin's younger brother Ricci as the trio Ricci, Desi and Billy. Martin died in 2016. 4. The Canadian actor, writer and producer Peter Aykroyd, who often collaborated with his older brother Dan, died Saturday, the day after his 66th birthday. No immediate information was provided about the cause of death. Both brothers were alumni of Toronto's Second City comedy troupe. Aykroyd's passing was revealed with a tribute card on "Saturday Night Live," where he served as a writer and featured player during Season 5 of the late-night sketch show (1979-1980). The card also appeared at the end of a posted tweet of his starring performance in the short film "Java Junkie," written and directed by Tom Schiller, The Aykroyds conceived the idea for the 1991 horror comedy "Nothing but Trouble," the bizarre tale of a Yuppie couple (Chevy Chase, Demi Moore) arrested for speeding in the small New Jersey town of Valkenvania. The centenarian local judge, Judge Alvin 'J.P' Valkenheiser (Dan Aykroyd), resembled a cross between Mr. Potter from "It's a Wonderful Life" and Frankenstein's monster. The film, which also starred John Candy, was a critical and commercial disappointment -- and earned writer-director Dan a Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actor. The younger Aykroyd was a co-creator and co-producer of the Canadian television drama series "Psi Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal," which was syndicated in the United States during the success of FOX's "The X-Files." "Psi Factor" was about the purportedly true cases of the Office of Scientific Investigation and Research (O.S.I.R.), a team assigned to look into alleged paranormal occurrences. Dan Aykroyd served as the host of "Psi Factor," which ran for four seasons (1996-2000). Laraine Newman @larainenewman So sad to hear that Peter Aykroyd passed away. Gilda Radner took me to see him at Second city in Toronto and I was dazzled. What a brilliant improviser. 8:00 PM · Nov 21, 2021·Twitter for iPhone
  5. Variety @Variety #KingRichard is headed for a muted debut of $5.95 million, far below original projections that hemmed closer to $10 million. That underperformance likely marks another victim of WB's strategy to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on HBO Max. https://bit.ly/3FyEmuT 11:15 PM · Nov 20, 2021·TweetDeck

  11. Bob Strauss @bscritic Everything about black&white surrogate parent drama #CmonCmon seems specific and to have earned its sometimes hard-won appeal. Good to see #JoaquinPhoenix can still play a benign fellow. #WoodyNorman is a real child actor. Too NPRy, but all of #MikeMills' films are. 1:11 PM · Nov 19, 2021·Twitter Web App
  12. Bob Strauss @bscritic #KingRichard has a powerful performance by #AunjanueEllis & an entertainingly irritating one from #WillSmith. The kids who play #Venus & #Serena are topnotch, if overshadowed. Tennis sequences are quite well shot, all the uplift isn't too egregious. Still feels like hagiography. 12:29 PM · Nov 19, 2021·Twitter Web App
