Surprising news. I don't believe I've been this shocked about a retirement since Gene Hackman stopped making movies after "Welcome to Mooseport" in 2004.
By the way, Hackman trended on Twitter yesterday when an update was posted about him.

While watching #NeverGonnaSnowAgain, I kept thinking this nice, slightly absurdist Christ parable about an immigrant masseur who brings comfort to unhappy bourgeois souls is like a suburban Polish #Teorema. About five times too gentle to be as good, but an interesting take.

There are multiple movies in #STILLWATER, and I enjoyed all of them more than anything else #TomMcCarthy's previously directed. Though a legal thriller, French travelogue and both dire and delightful family dramas, it's #MattDamon's character's arc that's most compelling.

is an #africanqueen for children. It's also a sequel to #AguirreTheWrathofGod, #Fitzcarraldo AND #BurdenofDreams, at least as far as #JessePlemons is concerned. I was mildly amused.

One of the coolest things about Alex Haley: He was the first journalist to interview a celebrity for The Playboy Interview (for enthusiasts of Hugh Hefner's magazine who actually read the articles). The inaugural interview -- based on sessions with the jazz great Miles Davis -- ran in the September 1962 issue. Among Haley's other subjects: the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X (which led to the author's collaboration with the former Black Muslim spokesperson on an autobiography), talk show host Johnny Carson and entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr.
Haley's eventful sitdown with American Nazi Party leader George Lincoln Rockwell -- a virulent White racist who didn't know the interviewer was Black -- was recounted memorably in ABC's 1979 miniseries "Roots: The Next Generations." James Earl Jones portrayed Haley. Marlon Brando earned a Primetime Emmy Award for his appearance as Rockwell.
