  1. "Mank," "Tenet," "Da 5 Bloods" and "Soul" won the top film prizes Saturday night at The Art Directors Guild's 25th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards. The presentation featured 2020-21 contenders from theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials and music videos. "Mank" and "Tenet" are nominated for Academy Awards in the Best Production Design category. Chloé Zhao, who has dominated the current awards season from the beginning , was voted the The Directors Guild of America's feature filmmaking excellence award for her 2020 drama film "Nomadland." The award -- along with numerous other prizes for excellence in motion pictures and television -- was revealed Saturday night in Hollywood at the DGA's 73rd annual ceremony. Zhao, who born in China, has become only the second woman, and the first woman of color, to earn the DGA's top prize. Kathryn Bigelow won the 2009 award for "The Hurt Locker." The other nominees were Emerald Fennell ("Promising Young Woman"), Lee Isaac Chung ("Minari"), Aaron Sorkin ("The Trial of the Chicago 7"0 and David Fincher ("Mank"). "Sound of Metal" director Darius Marder won the award for first-time directorial effort. "It's incredible to be in your company," he said, thanking his fellow nominees. "I raise a plastic hotel cup to you guys." He had a nice role in "The China Syndrome" (1979) as a PR guy who escorted a Southern California television reporter (Jane Fonda), her cameraman (Michael Douglas) and a soundman (Daniel Valdez) during a tour of the fictional Ventana nuclear power plant. While there, the TV crew became witnesses to an accident that, according to an expert, could have resulted in radioactive material melting "right down through the bottom of the plant, theoretically to China." The thriller about a potential nuclear meltdown was released on March 16, 1979. Twelve days later, on March 28, 1979, an accident at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island nuclear power plant shocked the world.

  21. The true story "Judas and the Black Messiah" received Best Picture honors Wednesday night from the .African-American Film Critics Association. The tale of a 1960s Black Panther leader betrayed by a member of his inner circle also won in the categories of Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Daniel Kaluuya) and Best Supporting Actress (Dominique Fishback), The movie's director, Shaka King, received the Breakout Director Award. Kaluuya (pictured below with co-star Fishback) portrayed the charismatic Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, who was targeted by the FBI. Hampton was the 21-year-old chairman of the Black Panther Party's Illinois chapter when he was killed by authorities during a predawn raid of his Chicago apartment on December 4, 1969. Fishback played Hampton's girlfriend Deborah Johnson. "One Night in Miami..," the directorial debut of the actress Regina King, picked up awards for Best Director, Best Screenplay (Kemp Powers) and Best Ensemble. The drama focuses on a fictionalized 1964 "summit meeting" of heavyweight boxer Cassius Clay (Eli Goree), Black Muslim spokesperson Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), NFL great Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) and singer Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom, Jr.). Most of the story takes place at a Miami hotel when the newly crowned champion Clay is about to announce his conversion to Islam as Cassius X (he later took on the name Muhammad Ali). Actress Viola Davis received a special Icon award for career excellence. "We have within us, all the tools that are necessary to elevate our lives in the most unbelievable profound ways," she said during the virtual presentation. "I have found it through my acting, but my God, we can find it through every area in our life."
